giving my fox coupe a fresh make over in the spring, but i am ordering stuff now. Was wondering who was running this setup. I dont really care about HP but more the sound, the setup i have now is just a hollowed out cat to a glass back to a borla muffler, and it sounds like a f'ing civic (maybe even worse). was hoping that mandrel bent goodness would quite it down but also have a nice tone. just wondering if anyone has it and could compare.

Talking about the TT cat-back system? They haven't offered the upper exhaust parts (dual downpipe) in years now, and that's the only part that gets you more HP. I've got a hi-flo cat and the TT cat-back, all 2" mandrel bent aluminized. I did not spring for the stainless borla muffler, just the standard dynomax. I like the sound. Throaty but subdued. Still kinda droney on the highway, but that's what my stereo is for

The TT kit includes everything you need, including NICE chain hangers and a new downpipe-to-cat gasket ring (a non-restrictive one to replace the fox restriction ring). Installs in an hour, tops.

I do need to have a test pipe made up soon, as the turbodiesel won't play nice with the gasser cat, and besides, next week is my last emissions test EVER.

I have one, too. When I first I put it on (minus dual dp/manifold) back in late '96 it sounded really nice. Over time, the addition of the 2L and dual dp/mani arrangement ended up beating the poo out of the Dynomax muffler and it lost that silky subdued sound. If you have the $$, I would go ahead and spring for the Borla upgrade on it. That's just me, though...

yeah i dont care about the HP, just want a low and slow cruzer ... but like i said the setup i ran sounds just plain terrible. dont know what i was thinking with that one.....lol i know they dont make the top part anymore should have made that clear, was just wondering what the sound from a cat back system was like.... maybe compared to a 2.0 jetta or something or if someone has a quick vid. clip of a rev or two would be sooooo great.

I got a 'modified' one on a parts car that I had. Seems it wasn't loud enough for whoever had the car before me, to they cut it after the resonator effectively making a side exit TT exhaust. It's loud. And stainless.

I had a TT exhaust on more than one car. I personally thought it sounded nice. Not too loud but when you stood on it, it made some noise.

    Ric-
Other than the muffler, is there any difference between those systems - tubing wise? My Dynomax is dead. If all the bends are the same, I should be able to do a direct swap / R&R with no trip to the muffler shop...

dynomax has the new VT models, which supposedly eliminates drone. http://www.dynomax.com/mufflers.php?muffler=vt

I wonder about longevity of that unit..

I also have the TT aluminized + dynomax setup currently, with a borla I pulled from the junkyard sitting in the trunk.

The dynomax has seen about 3.5 years and is much louder now compared to the first year I had it.

As far as swapping the mufflers around, have any tips for removing the muffler from the piping? I tried a flathead and a screwdriver, twisting, but in the end had to use a saw to cut off most of the piping at the pick-n-pull. So now I have about a 3" stub of pipe that needs to come off. Then I'll have the same issue pulling the dynomax off the current exhaust.
    I really suck at smog.

...now those will have an impact on sound... OP, don't worry about that part since you said you're not planning on running those.

I've been pulled over a few times and had to explain that the exhaust is supposed to sound that way. My other fox had just the cat back and it had a nice sound.

I have the following: Dasher EM, TT downpipe, and reallynic eset of pipes and muffler that Longitudinal made for me about two years ago.

I think the muffler is a dynomax with no resonator. It sounds good without being too loud or too quiet.

I've heard good things about the TT system overall.

I had the full TT set up on my 93 with a 266 cam in it... The car sounded mean not like a honda hornet.. it was a lower tone... you did get drone on the highway but I just slowed down and sped up to change the sound...
I got pulled over in Mass. The cop said I had a loud exhaust... and I agreed with him and said that it started on the highway after I hit a dip in the road..."somethin musta opened up"..... You think he was going to bend over and look for it? yea right... he let me go....

I sold my Fox kinda miss it but picked up 2011 MINI JCW... you want to talk fast
expensive yes... but I got tired of modding/ fixing.. just push the start button and go woosh...
smile and make a payment at the end of the month ...

Oh the fox sounds meaner then my JCW....

so...you still have the ultra restrictive 4-1 stock manifold, but you've gotten rid of your cat which is WAY less exhaust restriction? if you think it sounds nice now, get yourself a dual downpipe manifold...such a wonderful difference.

gas powered VW dasher, Audi 80, http://store.blackforestindustries.com/foxdudoexma.html and make your own downpipe...there is a thread or 10 about it somewhere. check the FAQs, there should be tons of info there. Definitely worth the trouble, unless you get rid of the stock restrictive manifold, nothing else you do will make as much power as it should.

... there is what appears to be a very nice quality dual downpipe available, but it ain't cheap.

Still, it's good to have this as an option. ...

Mine sounded good with the dynomax, but it rotted out a year after i got the car. I dont know when the p.o. installed it though, so dont use that as a judgement. I ended up putting a flowmaster on and love the sound. My resonator is starting to come apart now, so i'm thinking about replacing it with a cherry bomb.

yeah, I posted that CL ad in Classifieds too. Can't believe no one out there has snatched this up.

Chris has a nice package for me going out UPS with all sorts of parts from his Fox. He won a few VW show awards with it a few years ago - it was totaled by a Honda CRV recently...

He also has Bilsteins and Neuspeed Springs...
