How are u tryna get it out. i cant for the life of me find a 17mm hex bit SHORT ENOUGh to get in there. If u can help me find a socket HEX bit short enough, ill help u?? jk. If u can find a hex bit small enough id use some Universal's. UJOINTS and move it around the cradle to get some leverage with a breaker bar.....

Autozone has a 17mm bit that is JUST short enough to fit in there without a ratchet. I then clamped vice grips to the bit.

I was pulling on those vice grips so hard my whole rear-end was coming down (car was on ramps)

I stopped before I stripped or snapped the plug.

oh, well that was my other solution...DAMN, lol Well u know u can also try taking a pipe and sliding it over the vicegrips and using the pipe for leverage. i doubt ull strip it, u jsut may want to consider replacing the fill plug or taking a wire wheel to it to clean it up a little. I say soak it in PB Blaster and give it a go if u can. Once u break it loose...should be pie

Yeah I tried soaking it in PB blaster yesterday. Still nothing. Are you sure it wont snap or get stuck in there or anything? I was seriously pulling the back of my car down a half an inch to an inch

How much force do you think this thing can take? What would happen if I did snap the fill plug off into the rear diff?

i doubt ull snap it into the diff.... if its rusted on, then its rusted on, lol if u trully cant get it, i would buy a fill plug, take it to a shop and have them extract it or use air tools. The pipe will deff help though imo.

Very smart to have not removed the drain plug yet, I admire your foresight.

A 17mm wrench over the bit works better than vice grips, for what that's worth.

I would try a little bit of heat and a whole lot of force. As long as you're straight on the plug, I can't see hurting anything except your pride and/or knuckles.

Thats a really good idea, I feel dumb now lol. I'll give that a shot when I get home.

I went for a short drive before I attempted getting the fluid out, so that everything would break loose and the fluid plus any dirt would come out easy. So that warmed up the differential pretty well.

So I got the plug out. Changed the rear-diff fluid no problem.

Now to find a place to purchase the special bit for the gear-lube plug.

Sorry, transmission oil plug. The one thats like a 16 or 17mm tripple square with a point in the middle?

I used youngm7's idea, put a wrench over the bit. Made it so much easier.

I have this one http://www.ecstuning.com/Volkswagen-...ission/ES8234/ it's not cheap, so try to find someone to borrow it from. I needed an adapter to get this sucker onto my torque wrench since it had a 1/2" drive, the adapter was just long enough to get it to clear that thin pipe right in front of the fill plug

yeah there was a lot of stuff like that I noticed after taking the picture, like the passenger side vent is closed.

But its 100 degrees outside (literally) and I wasnt about to sit there any longer than I already had.

The cluster shot turned out really well IMO. and if you click it you can get it in much higher resolution, and I made it available for download.

I think that I should be able to construct a simple apparatus to hold the camera in place for a neat shot.
It would be a shot of the cluster again, where the red pins should be blurred. Might require some tricky maneuvering but totally doable if you think it would be cool.

two things that I havent mentioned yet:

I got blind-spot mirrors:



After having them for a while. I would say that I really enjoy no longer having a blind spot. But the ECS made ones are poor quality and not worth the $100 after shipping. Find legitimate euro ones. thats what Im going to do soon.


and I got the gorilla gear trunk liner:



I'm in love with the trunk liner, it keeps my road-side assistance kit secure in one spot. Even through hard turns

I happen to like the James Bond movies

So today I tossed the Chinese knock-off euro-switch I had into the trash, and installed an OEM VW one.

I also got OEM Euro Spec Tail Lights and with that you obviously need to wire in a rear fog, so I did that as well.

(This is the best pic I have seen that captures how they look in person)


Now I can be like PSU and drive with the rear-fog on all the time
