How to repair your FUBA antenna mast/whip

If you have cracks in your FUBA antenna you can add years of life to it by adding some heat shrink to it. You will need a heat gun, some pliers, scissors and large dia. heat shrink sleeve.

Cut the end of the heat shrink square.

Expand the end so it will fit over the widest part of the mast:

Rotate and expand the end some more so it will fit over the widest part of the mast:

Slide the heat shrink over the mast and check the length before cutting:

      Mark the spot for cutting:

      Cut to length:

Slide the heat shrink over the mast as shown:

Cut a second heat shrink piece the same size or just a little longer:

Slide the first piece over the mast:

Use the heat gun to shrink the material (don't melt the antenna):

Slide the second piece over the first:

Use the heat gun to shrink the material:

You have a repaired FUBA antenna mast/whip.

      More repairs:

If your antenna has major cracks in it, it can still be saved.

      Fill the gaps:

      wrap with electrical tape:

After the filler sets remove the tape and cover with a thin layer of silly putty.

      Cover with heat shrink:

Traditionally Scirocco drivers are more clever than wealthy. During the rescission / meltdown we were counting the the change in the sofa but still wanted to make repairs on the cars. This falls in the "saving what you have with stuff you have sitting in your garage" category. It is more fun for folks that like to fix stuff themselves rather than have someone fix it for them. I had 5 antennas sitting in a box that needed some help.

      This one needed a tip:

It is true that you can just get a new 16" antenna mast for about $7.00 - $ 19.00 but it will fail after about 5 years in the sun. If you put antenna balls on your Fuba it will fail faster. After you use this method for repair you can add an antenna ball if you like. With the 5 bucks you save you can get a foot-long sub at Subway.
