Lucky you
And don't do ugly headlights and grille like the b4

Hello everyone, my name is Alex and this is my new first day here on this audi forum
I've been on the B4 passat forum for quite some time, then my father surprise me with this 2001 A4 1.8T. Now I got two mechanically sound cars hehehehe
Glad to be a new member here and see how this blossom like my older vw![]()

time to start modding the A4 since you got yourself a nice DD right there.

Thanks guys, pleasure to be here to gain some proper knowledge of modding this nice A4
The passat was mine originally since I was 15, got it for free since it was in terrible shape, made a complete DIY timeline in my other thread since the first day, and how it changed over the years.
Own it for four years so far ( now I am 19) and it all goes well, then got the Audi. This will be the timeline for this one and I just can't wait how this one will turn out, if again I am given good pointers. I notice most Audi's here should be mildly modded ( stock with small yet noticeable detail) I like clean and simple as well.
Now, I notice this is a turbocharged 20valve four cylinder I got here, but I can't really hear the turbo, any way I can amplify the turbo sound without damaging the engine or ECU since I did hear BOV are BAD for the car since it will throw check engine light and screw the air/fuel ratio since it won't sense "backwash air" like the diverter valve does.
Other suggestions will be nice![]()

Look up the $80 cone filter mod in the diy section. Just do that and you'll hear the dv and turbo
#10
Looks good, great stock platform to go off of. Take your time and all I can say is do your research before doing any mods. If you need to be able to hear your turbo more then get a DV and do an intake. Just remember loud doesn't mean better or faster by any means. And your first "big" mod should be to lower it on quality coils.Just saying.... Good luck and enjoy

My first "small" mod which is the air filter, and it does make a hell of the difference pertaining to the dv and turbo sound, it is orgasmic
and manage to make it still look "stock"
My next "big" job is replacing lifters since they make a ticking sound, I already checked the oil pump for pressure and it is good, I guess the previous owner didn't properly set the lifters in because the whole top end ( i.e. head, timing belt, gaskets, etc) is freshly refurbished and didn't know the proper "audi" procedures

its probably your coil packs and injectors ticking. they are really loud in the 20v
Who knows...
#13
It is the lifters I am afraid to say since I compare the sound it makes to my other friend in school, who has a TR 1999 A4 quattro with a 20v 1.8t engine and a new turbo, his engine is super silent compared to mine.
I also open the oil cap while it was running for a brief minute and the sound amplified. I inspected everywhere for any other sources and it all comes from the inside of the valve cover.
Now my friend's audi did make small ticks like you said, the fuel injectors and coil packs but it is nice, small tick tick tick. when his hood closed, you can't hear sh**. Normal operation if I may say.
Mine sounds like a diesel on roids lol, even with the hood closed in the open area, approximately 12 feet from the car you can hear the lifter ticking. I just changed the oil 5 days ago, notice the p.o. used regular crap oil smh.....placed mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30 and still full to this day.
I am debating to three choices but it is up to my father since he got the money to do it ( and insisted of getting it done)
1. replace lifters ( new about 400 dollars, used from another engine $40)
2. redo the whole top end again ( pointless if identified that the head did went through refurbishment)
3. rebuild the whole engine from his respectable mechanic who he knows for at least 10 years in florida ( 1200 dollars including parts, labor, etc etc.)
what should I let him do?
#14
dont buy used lifters.. it could also be the VVT tensioner, it will make the car sound like a diesel, like a clacking sound. if that is what you're hearing.
whoever rebuilt the head, was probably unaware that you must bench bleed 20v lifters
Who knows...
#15
ahhhhh maybe either that or they didn't replace the tensioner...and the tensioner is cheaper if I am not mistaken hmmmm
#16
VVT tensioner ranges from 300-650 depending which level of goodness and brand you buy.
its located on the back of the head, if you look at the very back of your valve cover, on the back right you'll see a plug, that's it. under the rubber hose for the breather setup, beside the combi valve.
Who knows...

Update:
New oil pump plus pickup tube, now I get 20 psi idle, climbs to 100 psi as I go down the highway and cruise around 68-79 psi at 3000 +/- 200 rpms which is really goodPlus fresh oil change ( 5w-30 full sythetic mobil 1). I also added an oil gauge and boost gauge, noticed I got stock 7 psi setup
Didnt solve the ticking problem
Also noticed the noise come from the intake side, not the timing chain tensioner, so I am assuming it is the lifters since after the pump, the ticking did silenced slightly, but still there is that one parastic ticking as I rev the engine up. Soooo my next plan is replacing lifters ( CORRECTLY unlike the previous people who done it.....)
I also replaced all the light bulbs, cleaned the engine bay up. I am driving it to florida since they have a numerous of audis I can pick with, since I do need a bumper and some other little stuff
#18
Update:
Took whole front end off, painted bumper, the grills and place new HID on all four lamps
Also place exhaust tips too

Updates:
FMIC installed, with new boots, pipes etc, made and cut to fit with the fog lights
S4 grille painted and installed
Double din gps,dvd,bluetooth,radio entertainment system
new caps for the wheels finally XD
Ok, now the engine....I hate to say this but the ticking sound I am experiencing ( after changing out the lifters, timing chain tensioner, cleaning and desluging the whole engine) is the bottom end.
One of my bearings of the rods gave out just a little bit and amplified the sound until I basically stop driving the car.
Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.................
Today is the start of my new engine build
A very good friend of mine hooked me up an extremely low milage AEB engine to replace my underpowered ATW engine, with a special emission mod I am going to create to keep my SAI system since my area requires emissions.
For 1800 dollars and swapping engines and stuff, I am going to have a fresh AEB engine BIG PORT in my audi to replace the dinky small port atw engine with fresh internals, higher strength rods and other good ish
Pics to come

Definitely get rid of the LED's

Like mentioned, ditch the leds. I would straighten up the fmic and trim that lower portion of the bumper, so its not being pushed out by the fmic as well.

ew..was enjoying that picture with the frontmount till i got to the next one..u wer off to a good start but its not a honda broski![]()

when the new B8 generation came out a couple of years ago...things like that did not hurt the retinas (as much) but the sad reality is that now, everyone and their mother is putting it on their hondas and what not
#27
Dont worry guys, the leds are wayyyy gone.
Actually my whole front end is gone since the engine is going to be removed tommorow
Everything will be redone, to german clean standards of course![]()

Hey what did your engine sound like? im running through the same problems right now, ive replaced the lifters, and am about to do the oil pump, are you saying i should do the rod bearings instead? Idk i have the moeny to do both but id like to be a bit conservative.
I got 99 problems, and my b5 be all of em.

Day 1: extensive removal
Started to disconnect the battery, then the headlights and bumper comes off via torx screws ( 3 on each headlight, 2 triple square long bolts for the bumper. HID are also removed
Then took off the intercooler, pipes, couplers, boost MAP sensor, all the associated connectors and screws that hold the whole front black mount. Also had to break the zippies, clamps for the water system, etc
Took off my special SAI pump relocation Mod, belts, other hoses, fan blade, alot of connectors and label them, removed A/c and P/S pumps, keeping them connected to eliminate futher cost
Removed the screws holding the four mounts since I am taking the whole engine/transmission combo to thorughly clean everything, removed the turbo-to-cat nuts, more connetors and vacuum lines, shifter and other associated bolts

Got the engine hoist and after 30 minutes of rocking and turning, finally got the engine/tranny out
Place it in the van and off it goes. Now waiting till tuesday for the new engine to be finished
The water pump was SHOT but didnt caused the ticking ( i tried lol)
Now I have some serious cleaning to do
Stay tuned since it will be cleaned, degreased, painted, etc etc
Now to answer the question,
Well my car had this horrible ticking sound, actually more of a clank since it amplified. I replaced the oil pump, lifters, VVT tensioner and chain, desluge engine, always use 5w-40 full synthetic ever since I bought it, still the same damn ticking lol. I will find out exactly since the engine will be torn down for futher analysis![]()

dont judge me
I have a confession.....mine is 2wd...not a quattro XD

Looks like you got quite a bit to do. Depending on emissions in your area, I would look into removing the SAI, Vacuum line/check valve delete, and possibly getting rid of the pcv setup and running a catch can. Doing all of that would clean the bay up pretty good, and cut down on areas of boost/vacuum leaks.

I would LOVE to do that but I have strict emissions here
Plus then I am going to have to buy the chip for it which I dont have the funds yet, but that is most definitely next on my list![]()
