I have the 2010 Jetta Wolfsburg. JUST GOT A CALL FROM VW TODAY SAYING THEY HAVE A FIX. CALLED THE DEALER AND SET UP AN APPT. APPARENTLY IT IS THE CLIP THEY WILL BE INSTALLING. THE BULLETIN # 21-10-01. AFTER 1 YEAR THIS IS FINALLY GOING TO BE FIXED AND NO MORE RATTLE FOR US ALL! HOPE YOURS GETS FIXED SOON TOO! I WILL POST AFTER ITS FIXED AND LET YOU KNOW HOW SOUNDS. GOOD LUCK!
I will definately will post the part # from the invoice. If not on it, I WILL ask for you guys! I was SO shocked when VW called to tell me there was a fix finally. Can't wait to drive my Jetta without the rattle. It's going to sound SO much better.
I called a dealer today and asked about the potential fix I’ve read about for the acceleration noise. As usual, their first response is to shut down and say they’ve never heard of the problem. Fortunately for me, I’ve kept up with this forum and others on the web for well over a year, so I had lots of info to back them into a corner. I gave them the old TSB#21-10-01 that addressed the issue but didn’t provide a fix. The service manager reluctantly looked up it up and found that a new TSB came out this month (June ’11) outlining a fix. The new TSB# is 21-11-03. The service manager said according to this TSB the issue only affects 300 vehicles. The fix involves attaching a retention clip. The noise is caused by the turbo wastegate rod and actuator. I truly hope this fixes the problem. I would be happy with just a 50% reduction of the noise.
After more research, they found the part and ordered it. I take my 2010 Jetta Wolfsburg in for the modification next week. I’ll post an update along with the retention clip part number.
I'd still prob pay it rather than waste a half day at the dealer not to mention lose work time.
Heh. What's funny is every time I get my GTI serviced I bitch about 3 things.
-The car doesn't start sometimes when it cranks.
-The wastegate rattles on acceleration.
-DSG free revs in first gear and goes nowhere when I floor it. (happens at random.)
Their response is, "Our tech didn't find anything wrong. And the GTI doesn't have a wastegate." I have receipts proving these statements. It's really funny. I'd fix it myself, but I paid alot for this German ****box to be free of problems and for it to be under warranty.
Thousand Oaks VW doesn't have very good techs or competent service people.
Thanks for the wastegate rattle updates. Another piece of paper to throw at them.

I have an appointment to get it done soon. With the TSB they knew exactly what I was talking about and took less than 10 minutes to set up the arrangements. Glad VW gave some attention to this matter. If I listened to the radio less frequently, I really think it would be a bigger deal.
If your service rep doesn't know what you're talking about, ask to speak with one of the techs and give them the TSB number so they can look it up. When I called the first time they acted like I was retarded. After I got transferred back to the tech and he had the TSB pulled up, he was like "oh, sounds like your information is correct." And if they claim they can't duplicate it, make them go on a ride-a-long.
Whhhheeeeeeezzzzzzzzzz....back to life for some related feedback though I guess it has not been gone that long...
Had the work performed today by the shop foreman after an initial mix up that required a second visit in one day. I will check for thorough comprehension before leaving in the future. There was some confusion between this TSB and some other warranty work and a complicated definition of what contitutes a "clip" ect and some other....I will let it go at that.
At the end of the day the work was performed by the shop foreman who had a hell of a time and it took many hours with lots of fans just to be able for him to stick his hand under there. The TSB has been completed and here are my impressions:
The distinct "rattle" is gone, replaced by a related but different mettalic sounding hum/whine in the exact same rev range where the "rattle" used to be. It almost seems like the clip has changed the frequency somehow and there is a new sort of resonation there along with turbo sounds. As crazy as it seems, it reminds me of musicians in harmony, related yet distinct. I cannot truthfully state whether this is a valid "fix", but at least it does not sound like something broken anymore in the undercarriage and I can live peacefully with this sound that is different yet present. I suspect however, total elimination might be preferable and a solo turbo note might do the job a bit better
It is interesting to read many of the comments here so far. I personally remember taking it to the dealership long before I ever saw a thread on the issue because I suspected something was wrong with the transmission. The very same shop foreman who repaired it also rode with me over six months ago and indicated it was a normal characteristic of the TSI engine and explained some of the differences as I had previously been in possession of a FSI equipped MKV. At that time there was no "solution" so I simply accepted it and moved on. Glad to see VW is at least working to address the issue and even if it does not solve the problem entirely, there is a noticeable improvement in the nature of the sound and the intrusion of the overall sound into the cabin has been greatly reduced. Overall it is worth getting done If you have the "rattle" though I would not race in just for the TSB. Get it done at the next service as it is not earth shattering. If you do not know whether you have it, you don't. It would be quite obvious if you did.

Contacted my dealer (Cambridge VW), asked about getting this done. They found the TSB and the info, but said they have to verify that it's the actual issue before they can sign off on installing the clip. Should be good, so far the guys here have been pretty decent.
