Mine was real bad when new... now it's gone. Rust can do great things if given a chance.

I set up an appointment for Thursday, 7/21. It's just two days but I can't wait! The local VW service department can't wait to get this over with an me out of their hair. I truely hope to report good news by the end of the week.

I had this done over the weekend also and am very satisfied with the results. Was in and out of dealership in less than 90 minutes including cool down time.

It's been 1 day since I had the clip installed. I'd say it's about an 80% improvement. The noise isn't completely gone but is much less noticeable. At this point, I think it's a vast improvement over what was going on before. I’m sure I'll notice the dampened rattle less with time. I’m guessing that my car’s original “rattle” was a severe case. It was a long, aggravating road to get here but man it all seems worth it now. It’s like a new car.

So, I’ve lived with the fix over the weekend and I can honestly say that I don’t notice the noise anymore. I was a little concerned at first because right after the clip was installed I could still hear a similar sound at the same RPM. After 1.5 yrs of listening for that god-awful rattle, I believe that I just became super sensitive to the sound. If you haven’t started the process of working with your dealership on the clip install and the noise bugs you, I believe you should call soon. It’s well worth your time. If you can time it with a service check up even better. They may look at you like you’re crazy, but don’t give up.

Update - I got it done on 8/4. Now instead of rattling between 2K-3K RPM, it rattles from around 2200-2500 RPM, which is a huge improvement. My service advisor said that the part that they had was a little older design, and that they ordered one of the latest revision and will install it sometime this week.

I would much rather 300 RPMs of noise vs 1000 RPMs of noise, I would agree that is a vast improvement.

I just contacted my mechanic, who happens to work at a local VW dealership, he said he will get the part in.

Hopefully I'll get this done this week.

edit: Apparently the part is on a massive back order (go figure), he told me that there isn't 1 in the US currently....

At least we are makin progress

My dealer ordered the part last week and I think they got it in already.. If you can find the part number I might be able to check with a contact of mine that is a manager for the VAG parts distribution centers.

    Good news.

They should not be charging anyone for this.

They put a new clip in a month ago, and the sound was still there but not as loud and only through like 300RPM range. Then they had the actual updated clip put in a week or two ago (the first clip they put in apparently was just a new clip, not the updated design), and the sound was worse than with the 2nd clip. But now either I don't notice the sound or it's gone

Luckly my buddy works at my local dealership and I don't catch any crap like this.

But this service is offically a TSB and is covered by VW, you should search the TSB number and bring it to your dealer so they can pull it up or see if anyone made it available online and you print it out and take to them.

It blows my mind that we pay 25k+ for these vehicles and once you leave the dealership they cut their ties and aren't willing to help.

They might, I know originally when I went in, before my buddy worked there, they wouldn't perform the TSB because I had the forge DV.

I just go mine done today at Koeppel VW in Queens during my 10K service, NY. I used the TSB 21-11-03, worked , free of charge. My service rep. was surprised how much the clip costs ($85) . Thanks to those who posted.

Mine cost $0 (+ no time or effort wasted) because it doesn't ever need to be done. The zip-buzz is gone on it's own... or maybe I don't give a sh*t anymore..... $85 bucks... someone is making a killing here.

As far as the rattle, I still hear it slightly in first but bot nothing when accelerating through 2nd and 3rd gear.

chiming in...i had a pronounced rattle noise between 2-3K (sounded like my old MK2 16V pinging )...had the car in to get some other rattles address in the cabin and told them i wanted this done...service manager was clueless but the tech knew what was up and installed the clip...sound is completely gone for me

Is this an issue on 2012s too? I just started hearing a rattle in low RPMs too. Like when in drive poking along at 45mph and accelerating a little I can hear it (among other times at low RPMs). If I go into a lower gear to accelerate such that the RPMs are higher, I don't hear it. Seems to be coming from passenger side...

Just a little follow up. I've had my clip for about 2k-3k miles now and still not a peep from the rod.

What changed from the mkv's to the mkvi's? My old 2009 GTI didn't make this noise at all.
