I live near a town that is very New England which attracts a lot of tourist and weddings during the summer. Last summer I was driving through downtown and noticed a wedding party getting their photos taken. All the brides maids and bride on one side and groom and his guys on the other, parents, kids, the whole nine pretty much. As I was driving by, the bride sees my car and says “wow an R32, babe look!” The bride puts the photo shoot on hold while she checks out the R. Groom looks at my car and says “nice dude”. Traffic rolls at about 1 mph through that area in the summer, so the couple got a good look at the car…along with everyone else who seemed to be annoyed that my car was becoming a distraction. A little awkward at the time but funny.
    Awesome story!

This past Saturday. At the gas station picking up some propane. The huge goth guy that was working the counter walks out with me to get a new tank. Sees my car, stops. "Wow! Your car is very....... SHINY!!!"

    At first I . Then I 'd.

Son: So you sold the Mini to get this?
    Me: Yeah.
    Son: Is it faster?
    Me: No.
Son: Does it get better gas mileage?
    Me: No. Much worse.
Son: Do you like driving it more?
    Me: No. Less actually.
Son: So... why did you get it?
Me: You know, I'm really not sure.
Son: Oh. Well I like the navigation thingy.
Me: Yeah, I guess that's kind of cool.
Son: You're going to sell it, aren't you?
    Me: Yeah, probably.
Son: That's ok, I don't like it that much either.

Friend: So what did you get?
    Myself: A Volkswagen R32.
    Friend: What's that?
    Myself: (shows him picture)
Friend: You bought a 2-door hatch?
    Myself: Yes.
Friend: Why would you buy a 2-door hatch?
Myself: My previous two cars were 2-door hatches.
Friend: Your BMW wasn't a hatchback. (referring to my Z4 M Coupe)
Myself: Yes it was, as well as the Mini before it.
    Friend: I don't believe you.
Myself: You're an idiot. (Walks off)

After doing the flapper mod, I cruised away from a light in a higher gear next to a new mustang.
At the next light the guy asked

    Is that a V8?

I let my girl drive my car while on vacation and she was at the gas station filling up the R.

She noticed 2 guys ogling her and was getting a bit uncomfortable.

She realized quickly that they were checking out the car and waiting for her to drive off to hear the exhaust. She was certainly perplexed by that.

Sadly, I didn't have my Magnaflow on at that time. That would have been even better.

These kids I went to high school with (talking about 4+ years ago now) still like driving their 1990-somethin honda's and always come up with the usual VW sterotypes..

Hear a lot of "It's slow" "Costs too much" "Oil Burner"

I just laugh because they have no idea what they're talking about.

My favorite thing is when people try to pass me on the highway and I give a little more gas and I'm already going much faster than they are. Then looking in the rear-view mirror to see them cussing up a storm!

    Love my .:R!

    I'll share my story.
I was driving back in to the city with my cousin as passenger. I enter a rotary and notice a mk2 jetta coupe entering up ahead. We both exit the rotary at the same turn off and come to a set of lights. Now he pulled up after seeing both the front end and the rear end of the car (cosmetically my car is stock).
The guy proceeds to roll down his window.....I too roll down my window. The kid then yells out, WOW! R32??
    me: yup!
him: And you put the jetta front end on it, looks great!
me: yeah, right ....jetta front end

My cousin and I laughed and drove off. Man, here I was thinking.....a fellow enthusiast that should have a clue....guess not!

As I was out shooting pictures today, a female gym teacher walks out and asks,

"Looks good! How's your gas mileage?!"

    Bad.

    "How bad is bad"

    20mpg.

    "Ohhhh. Nevermind"

    It's heavy, AWD, and has a V6.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other day at work, one of my co-workers who also graduated from PSU walks into the break room with everyone listening...

"Revels... does your VW even have any suspension?"

"Tried to fit my finger between the tire and the fender and couldn't even do it."

Back when the .:R32 was new in the fall of 2007:

From a friend who drives a Prius: You got a Rabbit.
    Me: It's an .:R32
Friend: Is it good on gas? Bet I get better gas mileage.
Me: Comes with a year of carbon offsets from VW. (I pulled out the Carbon Neutral Project sticker from the glove box). I drive an environmentally friendly car.

I will bet the Golf R doesn't come with carbon offsets!

VW literature with the car when new:
"The contributions of the full Volkswagen community will be put toward re-forestation of the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley as the chosen means of carbon reforestation, in a 1,100-acre plot of land. It's simple: VW and VW owners take action, trees are planted and we begin to offset our carbon. Side benefit: a lot of local creatures, like Louisiana Black bears, fish, raptors, shore birds, wading birds and ducks are a little happier, as are the water, and the soil. And once the area is reforested, it will stay reforested."
Candy White 2008 .:R32 #532 and Shark Blue 2010 Golf TDI
.:R you in? I'm in. You .:R what you drive.
Seduced by the Da.:Rk side I am.

Haha most of the time some of those people that work for the dealerships have nothing to do with or know nothing about VW.

I learned that the hard way.

I have a buddy who works there who knows everything about everything, and the guys at Day Apollo VW in Moon Twp are pretty good.

But I knew it was bad when a buddy's brother hooked me up (works at Dodge dealer) in the garage and did my mount/balance on my new wheels for me, and his boss watched how I took in everything going on and asked me about my suspension work and motor work (none, but did build a fast, reliable DSM last year) and then says:

    "You looking for a job?"

I just laughed and said no, I know nothing about Dodge and am in college, etc.

He goes "Know nothing about Dodge cars? Neither do they!" and points to his whole staff.

    MKV Content: (another story)

Local Sheetz Civic crew member: "Nice GTI, wanna race?" (Drives a Civic Si from the late 90s)

Me: "No. I have more HP, more TQ, more cylinders, a faster transmission, and AWD."

Myself: Yes it was, as well as the Mini before it.
    Friend: I don't believe you.
Myself: You're an idiot. (Walks off)
    Dude,

Were we separated at birth? I have an 08 M Coupe, traded a MINI Clubman S in for this R32. Why did you sell the M Coupe?

Yesterday - Maund VW Austin - shop foreman took my R for a drive to diagnose a DSG problem...

We drive sedately around the neighborhood for 10 mins while he tests for off-idle surge, etc. then head back toward the shop. About a block away he lights it up to 60 on a residential street whilst poppin' the paddles then calmly pulls into the driveway.

Looks over and says "God I love these things. Lemme see if we can get the VW area rep to take care of you..."

Not exactly a street filled with strollers, dogs and old ladies with walkers. More like a deserted side street next to a car dealership. Didn't bother me a bit. You had to be there...

These are hilarious and have gotten just about every single one of them. Too many times do people look at me like I have 3 heads when i in fact dont have a GTI or a Golf but an 'R32"

This thread is an easy way to explain the reason behind my europlate:

Just shaved this week though, had it there to cover up those holes CT requires in the front of the car

I got my fill of it. It was my daily for 3.5 years and I needed a change. Plus I was sick and tired of dealing with my local BMW dealership. I was a customer of them for 9 years and just couldn't take it anymore.

OK, I'll start my story with the fact that I'm age 63 and probably well above the average age of the owners on this forum. LOL.
Anyway, yesterday I pull my R into the local car wash. The attendant (approx. my age) comes out, looks at the car and says, "Nice car." "Does it belong to your kid?"
So, I thought for a moment about explaining to him how I refuse to grow up. Instead I just stiffed him on the tip.
