Looks awesome man, I can't even notice that blemish they had on the passenger side. I love those lights, trying to find a jetta set but its almost impossible. If you come across any please let me know.

And, as far as updates, I just started degreasing yesterday. I covered all electric, plugged all open holes and pulled the motor out to the street, By the time I got it out there i had 4 minutes to degrease before the storm blew in on me, but in those four minutes it came fairly clean. Still got a ways to go though.

I know, I'm really happy with them! My only concern is the driver's side bottom bolt was sheared off so the taillight is only being held in by the top two bolts. I got them pretty snug and kinda fiddled with it to check it out and i'm sufficiently happy with how it's sealed so i'm not worried about leaks.

Absolutely! I responded that I would keep my eyes out to your previous PM but your inbox was full...

If its just the bottom one im sure it wont leak, one of the top ones would concern me but if it does leak silicon works wonders.

The inbox fills up way too fast and i forget to clean it out every now and then.

Finished up the pre disassembly degreasing tonight after work. Actually came a lot cleaner than I expected. Hoping to get into it soon. Everything is going to be cleaned much more thorouhly through disassembly process. but here's as good as it'd come still together.

Castrol super clean is a hell of a product. Just about 200,000 Its possible that before me an engine with less miles was put in but I don't know anything about it. PO's were hackers at best. All i know is the mileage on the cluster.

Yeah the alternators pretty shot also but i'll probably be replacing both before it goes back in. Im thinking about buying a cheap harbor freight blasting cabinet as well cause theres so many things I want to clean up but maybe just wire wheel everything.

Well did a little more degreasing today and threw the motor, hoist, and stand on my truck and brought it over to where I'm working on it. Slow progress but progress is progress.

Spent most of the day cleaning up the garage so my grandparents dont get pissed that im doing this over there. Stripped some more out of the bay afterwards. Gotta pick up some more degreaser for my subframe/rack as well as a wire wheel hopefully tomorrow after work. Got a bunch of things i want to wire wheel and put a fresh coat of paint on. But for now it sits like this. I should also be getting the wheels back from espo's on friday, not that there going to be ready to go on anytime soon but i wanted to cross that off the list. I was sick of stepping over them in my basement numerous times a day unfinished.

In my work yesterday I made the decision to get rid of a couple things, and re route some others.

The battery is going to get moved to the passenger side in the trunk
I'm ditching the abs as well as the SAI
And most likely going to see about hiding the power steering reservoir over on the opposite side of the frame rail.

I know only 101 about electric but how much do you really need to know about it to just extend wires. A buddy of mine is an electrical wizard so if I run into trouble which I don't expect, I could always ask him for some pointers.

Started engine tear down last night after work. Block is stripped, the head would have been off last night if i had the proper bolts to move it from the hoist to the stand. Should be off tonight.

    For now we end here.

Does anyone know of a good machine shop that does reputable work that will have a plate for a vr preferably in the central NJ area? I have heard bad things about Eddie's Valve Grinding in Sayreville which sucks because its so damn close. But i'd much rather travel and be assured of a good job then go close for the convenience and have shady workmanship.

What do you mean a 'plate' for a vr?

As far as a reputable shop, my brother had a head decked / refreshed on my old GTI when he still owned it that came out perfectly by Redline Speed Worx in Washington. Not to mention a buddy of mine is having them do his 3.0 vr6 block.

They are at most of the NJ shows and local meets. Pat and JR are cool, down to earth guys who know a thing or two about quality work.

I know of rs worx but wasn't aware that they were also a machine shop. I'll give them a call. As far as a plate I'm talking about a torque/honing plate. My cylinder walls are looking like they may need a hone at quick glance. Didn't get a chance to get the dial bore guage on it last night, but either way i'm going to need a machine shop so figured id get the ball rolling.

My buddy works for vw as a tech and actually grabbed one of there extra engine stand plates and we used that.

As for last night's progress, stripped the rest of it, popped the head off and found exactly what i expected to find on a 200,000 mile motor in a car that was abused by PO's. Some crusty sh1t. A couple cylinders were rich a couple lean

No progress on the car tonight. I got off the bus from work and started my truck like I always do and I **** myself how loud it was. Someone cut off my entire y pipe including both cats and oxygen sensor. As pissed as I am it does sound beast though. Here's a sound clip. Filed a police report just to avoid getting a ticket, but going to go raise hell at the town hopefully tomorrow.

I live in North Carolina and its hard to find anything VW around here much less anyone to work on them, so i decided to learn myself.Curently an Auto systems tech student ive done some work to my mk3 Gti , the Vortex has been very helpful. I just want to step it up a notch. Any links, websites, info would be greatly appreciated timothyrhoades@rocketmail.com

This and also I have an office job and i get bored quite often so just read through other peoples builds, do research, and learn that way. Plus a close buddy of mine is a vw tech and at this point in the competition is top 50 tech's in the nation. The kid knows his **** and will probably go all the way to the top. So anything I can't teach myself, I learn from him. Before being a vw tech he worked at a race shop that worked on all the no time cars that run here in jersey. But when the recession hit the shop closed down naturally as racing becomes less of a priority. But this is who's also helping me with this build. Being that it's my first I think I have the perfect person to help me out.

Made some more progress today. Degreased the sub frame and rack. Pulled the after market drivers fender, thats now scrap, on the hunt for an oem one in flawless condition. Color doesn't matter. If you have something mint let me know. No antenna hold please.

Also pulled the sideskirts off as they will not be going back on the car once it is painted. The top strips and end caps, along with the mounting channel strip for the skirts are in mint condition and will be for sale in my for sale thread. The skirts themselves were trash and made there way into the dumpster.

When i pullled the side skirts, i noticed some rust in my rear wheel well behind the rocker panel. Barely poked it and my finger went through, so in addition to the rockers being shot this will be repaired at the same time

Also, when I pulled the fender and checked out that vacuum manifold in the drivers fender I realized theres a couple of lines that are missing. I haven't gotten a chance to check my bentley yet but does anyone know what's supposed to go to these two vacuum ports?

And how it sits currently... Still a long way to go

Damn crack heads!! Your rockers look worse than mine and I'm in VT, do they use that salt spray on the roads where you live in the winter? Most of my family is from AC area, I had never seen that stuff till this last Jan when I was down visiting.

They use strait huge chunks of rock salt in VT, bad news. After driving in the winter your car is just covered in this white film, all salt.
