Thread: Need Help: Gas Tank Door Won't Open

    1. 03-09-2011 11:03 PM #1
      Hello,

Is there a manual release for the gas tank door of a Mk VI GTI? If so, could you please point me in the right direction?

I tried restarting and turning off the engine, and unlocking all doors, but I don't hear a click for the gas tank door (which would normally allow me to push it in and swing it open).

      TIA.

      Hmm..

      Ignition off
Doors Unlocked (make sure you it it 2x so that it unlocks all doors)
Push in and then pull open.

If it isn't working like this, then you have an issue.

If this does not work, you will need to get into your trunk and start removing the paneling behind the gas door. A million bucks says there is a remote release right there or you can even fix the issue you are having. Get some nice interior tools and get to work.

I think he is talking about the emergency release. Not sure if you need tool to get at it thought! Maybe thats why VW gave you that screw driver

i've heard some ppl mention the gas tank release was out of sequence. Test the door when the car is locked and then test it when the car is unlocked.

but since you already tried that i am really at a loss. might be a mechanism failure.

bump for VW treating the trunk and gas cap as doors

gotta just unlock all the doors for them to open... oddly enough you have to unlock all the doors for a VAG-Com to function properly. went bat sh!t crazy trying to figure out what was wrong until someone corrected me

Yeah I was after I had a couple "good" coding sessions and then I went to do it again and all of a sudden the module I needed access too wouldn't work.

I found this burried somwhere in an FAQ, but it is the truth.. if your VCDS isn't communicating you might need to cycle the locks.

Thanks for all your suggestions, guys. Believe me, I tried almost every combo of locking/unlocking all doors and hatch, to see if the fuel door would open.

It turns out, it's a bad actuator. Got it replaced under warranty, and I'm now good to go.

Know how they got in there? They go through the hatch space trim/liner?? Good to know in an emergency.
