      2000 VW Golf TDI

Just bought a 2000 VW Golf TDI Automatic 124,000 miles on Feb 18th. 2 weeks later I am driving down I-40 in Arkansas, 2000 miles from home and it breaks down at about 60 mph.

These are the details of the breakdown: It broke down at about 60mph, engine had trouble shifting into 5th gear, started to vibrate and shut off. When the key is turned it makes a clicking sound. Flywheel doesn't turn. Oil level was normal when engine failed- it had been changed 1500 miles prior.

It's unclear whether the transmission is locked up, or if both the transmission and engine have damage. I believe they would have to be decoupled to identify the problem. The Pepboys guys and VW dealer in Little rock both declared the engine seized, without opening it up or checking the transmission. Previous to the breakdown the car would occasionally "shudder" while idling or driving for extended periods of time under 20mph.

I've heard that transmission failures are common with this year of TDIs.

I'm looking for advice on how to go forward. I dont want to junk the car, Im willing to put some money into it to repair.

Im also interested in a manual conversion. Does anyone have experience with that?

      warmest,

      Robyn

I did a manual conversion on my mk4 VR6. Locating parts is about the hardest part of the swap. This is a TDI specific thread from another site that is VERY detailed. It is over 100 pages long and should cover everything you need to know.

The value of the car does not justify it's repair, IMO.
He/She has a point. However My swap cost me about 700 dollars and i get 15 percent better gas mileage because of it, at some point the money in fuel saved will pay for the swap.

Additionally the average driver must burn close to 2000-3000 in fuel a year. If you have to commute farther, this cost goes up dramatically. A TDI flat out saves 1000's a year on fuel to a heavy driver, so bearing that in mind a repair might be warranted. TDI's in my area are hard to find used because they are coveted for long commutes ( 1.29 a liter for 91 octance where i live thats about 4.87 a gallon) and when you do find them used they are still $$$.

I've talked to a guy with two TDI Automatics... one has 300K miles on the original tranny, the other has 600K miles. The transmission fluid has to be changed every 60K miles, but it seems like it can be done.

Other used TDIs with similar milage are easily over $8K.

If I junk this car, I lose the money I paid for it, plus I will still have to put out another $8K for a new car.

The repair sounds like it makes the most sense.

Also.... I'm not actually sure the problem is the transmission. 2 mechanics told me the engine was "locked up" but didn't open up anything to check out internal parts. The oil level was within normal range when I broke down, and had been changed 2000 miles prior.

      I thought until 2002.5 MK4's only had 4-speed automatics?

Sounds like you know more about the car than I do.

Any ideas for what caused the breakdown?

Around here there might not be a lot of help for the TDI engine. Not too many of us are familiar with the diesel.
