Ok, did a search and didn't see it mentioned, so...

I suppose it's time to kick off a thread about this, since there's a fair amount of info out there on AICN and other sites.

Here's what we know so far:
    • It's not exactly a prequel, but it takes place in the same universe as Alien.
    • The Aliens are in it, we think.
    • Part of it is being shot in the ruins of an ancient Scottish castle.
    • Other sets look more traditionally Giger-esque.
    • Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) has been cast as the lead.
    • Charlize Theron (!) is also onboard.
    • The "space jockey" pic circulating from the AvP site is an April Fool's joke

    Sounds cool to me

Thanks for the links. I have very high hopes for this movie with Scott behind it.

Everything I've heard so far has my interest peaked (but then again, so did Avatar before the trailers).

Just seeing Ridley Scott return to sci-fi is going to be interesting. He's developed substantially as a filmmaker since his early days and I think at long as the story is interesting, this could be a great film.

Would like to see some connection to Aliens, even if it's not overt.

I just got about half way through it and turned it off - thought it was a stupid movie, I still don't buy humanoid CGI characters (think they look fake/goofy as hell and this movie wasn't any different), and couldn't figure out what all the hype was about. Luckily this is one that I didn't have to pay for

Leaked description of what seems to be the real/official trailer is out (and was subsequently pulled at the request of Fox; it's still around in a few places):

    SPOILER (highlight to see)

"Had to join to to comment on this. I am the Chris that saw the trailer. I run a theatre in the Denver area and my theatre has Nielson kiosks in the lobby for surveys of upcoming titles. They told me that they had few different trailer for various movies, but when they said PROMETHEUS, I said I must see the trailer. It was nearly 2 minutes long and looked fairly polished and complete. It was using a temp track for music and the trailer was VERY similar to the original teaser for ALIEN the way is was cut together. Quick shot after another. Had a couple a lines of dialog I think but is was hard to hear since my lobby was a bit noisy.

The planet they showed in the trailer looked nothing like original one where the derelict was crashed. It was sunny and desert like in appearance. The space suits the characters were wearing were VERY similar to the original suits worn by the crew of the Nostromo. The interior shots of their ship looked clean and not used like the the NOSTROMO did. It was all new and shiny looking. I did not see an exterior shot of the derelict ship but there were some really quick shots of the inside like the jockey, another room that looked like were the jockey was but without it, the room with the eggs but there were no eggs in it. There were some quick shots of the crew walking in the same "halls" that Kane and Dallas walked in as well in the derelict ship. But these things were hitting the screen so fast, it was hard to process all the information. Some of the crew look were in medical/cryo-tubes with something moving in their abdomens not their chests. Their eyes also appeared to be completely black and the faces altered I think. The end of the trailer ended with the title forming much like the ALIEN title did in the original movie at the top of the screen.

However, there were no mentions of the original movie at all. No Giger aliens, no eggs, nothing at all to pin this being a prequel. It just "looks" like it was from that universe."

    http://www.alienprequelnews.com/2011...railer-on.html

Turns out the leaked preview of the trailer that was sent to us here on Prometheus-Movie.com yesterday was in fact the REAL deal and was actually a preview of the official Prometheus movie trailer. 20th Century Fox has requested that we remove the leaked information and the comments associated with the find. We encourage neighbouring sites who sourced their finds from us to do the same.

    - Thank you and sorry for the inconvenience

saw this on the web a few months back but not alot of detail
it would be cool to have an origins movie for the "aliens".
read that the space jockey was the creator of the aliens to used as a biological weapon that went south and in the beginning they never looked as they do/did now. but the movie will mainly be about the two companies that owned the mining rigs used in the first movie and also the ones who created the shake and bake colonies.
but I could be totaly wrong, it's just what I read.
Any VWs made after 92 are usually only good for drive train donors.

I think it's pretty well established now that the space jockey (or his race) plays into the plot somehow, but the *picture* referenced in the OP is a fake.

IDK maybe is just the fact that H. R. Giger is so amazing disturbing with his art. But I love everything about the alien movies from the ships walls and how everything has like a complicated and organic look. I am psyched for this big time. Its too bad the Aliens vs Predator game for 360 kinda sucks

I really hope they're making something good . I've always been a great fan of the 'Aliens' movies but felt really disappointed when they did the AVP series .

They're having nerd-gasms over at AICN over this thing.

The still photos (see link to composite JPG I posted yesterday -- warning/possible spoilers) from the footage they showed at ComicCon has everybody turning cartwheels.

I'm encouraged that it seems to me like it's got PLENTY to do with Alien -- there was some disinfo that this might not be a "real" prequel, but a film set in the same universe, yadda yadda. I think the stills indicate pretty strongly this is a direct or near-direct prequel to the first film. Everything in those stills points toward Alien, space jockey and all, and I think it looks terrific.

There are plenty of dark horror movies that are PG-13. Outside of the chest-burster scene, language and the death of Parker it would be an easy PG-13.

All, IMO, huge elements that make it what it is and draw you into the characters.

And the Geigerisms, a monster with a phallus for a head, that comes from a crab thing with an extendible tube vagina that face-****s you and impregnates a man.

Plenty of innuendo can be in PG-13 movies. Ever heard of Austin Powers?

Also, with the chest-burster, you'd just have to show it from John Hurt's back and facing the crew. You'd get their reactions and you'd see the xenomorph scurry away, but wouldn't see it actually burst through the ribcage.

As for Parker's death, just show only the alien and the back of Parker as he's attacked. It wouldn't change the scene much.

Regardless, I'd much rather have it be an R, but I don't want it to be an R that's filled with cheap scares and gore. If the violence and language feel natural, that's fine, but if it's forced or there to cheapen the movie then I can do without.

Of course. But AP is a comedy. I agree with some of your points, just saying that much of what you're saying could be removed from the original to net a PG-13 are the things that make it iconic.

And if it gets an R, it will be because of Scott's stellar and tasteful direction. If it's PG-13, I feel that, while the gist will, of course be there, it will have no balls.

I had read there is a lot of pressure to keep ratings PG all across the board so they can attract the widest audience therefore bringing in the most money.

A lot of "older" people will not go to the movies because of the BS and the economy. "Young" people are still going.

Like someone else said, this is one movie this "old" guy will break his no theater policy for.

I might see 5-10 movies a year. My 40" 1080p set and Vizio sound bar don't hold a candle to a movie theater. To avoid kids I go to late showings and I see movies kids aren't interested in seeing.
