Took me a second before I realized it wasn't being driven by anyone....

    Was it a prank?

    That's creepy.

    Late April Fool's?

Instantly knew it was Canada when I heard the chinese talking....

And is that video taken from a phone? If so, that's sharp!

LOl at the cops just following it around in circles....did they think they could intimidate it into stopping?

  11. 04-10-2011 07:59 AM #12

Not sure I'd want to be running in the path of that rear tire trying to grab onto a handle and jump on the step.
And it looks slow from afar but when right next to it and with said rear tire turning 2 feet from your head...
You even see the guy trying to jump on and bailing at the last second.

I'd say they handled it pretty smart. Secure the area, let it run into something solid or put something massive in its path. No use to lose a life/limb to save an SX4 and a Corolla (disclosure: I drive an SX4). And if it was my crew, somebody would be getting a stern talk about trying to jump on a moving tractor.

good point, but still, those tractors aren't cheap, you could just break the rear window and climb through the back.

They should have done something cool for the crowd (as if this wasn't cool enough) and fired a Javelin missile at it, or called in a nearby Apache gunship.

If any emergency personnel would try to jump on that tractor in an attempt to stop it they would be promptly fired or suspended in my town.
Your safety comes first. Even if it was the last John Deere in existence.

LOL I've been to that Walmart. I agree that they handled it right. No way I would let anyone try to get into that thing while its driving around.

Any one who thinks it would have been "easy" to jump in and stop this thing should go find a J.D. dealer and go stand next to one of these. Now imagine it motoring around in a circle at something a bit faster than a walking pace. I know I would think twice.

In America there would have been police helicopters and a highway patrolman would have pit maneuvered the tractor while this guy narrates

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

I'm Sheriff John Bunnell... I've been an officer long enough to know some things never change: tractors still think they can get away and cops will do anything to stop them. Pursuing a tractor on the run is dangerous enough, but when that tractor is suicidal the stakes become deadly FOR EVERYONE.

Toronto, Canada. A John Deer tractor careens out of control through a Walmart parking lot. Innocent bystanders dive for cover as three tons of steel hurtle by at mind boggling speeds.

You just read that in his voice.

No wait - it was John Davis from MotorWeek. My mistake. My childhood consisted of:

I'd rather read in the John Bunnell voice.
