They could have extended the roofline forward another 6" and dropped the windshield at the same angle, I suppose, but it wouldn't have netted any more useful interior space, and just recreated the awful dashboard-of-doom that was in the first generation (which invariably ended up staying dusty all the time).
To my eyes, it's this that makes the new one so much better - that they didn't.

I always wanted a fist version of a car.

I trust that site as much as I trust their proof reading.

Still only three gauges though, which is sad.

Is this wheel shared with any other VAG models?

Okay so I have 1 very important question regarding this Beetle. I see the Xenons are on the press vehicle that they used in NYC (white one). When VW showed us the U.S. spec Eos at the LA show they didn't show any vehicles with the optional Xenons on the cars because they are going to be a slow introduction to the U.S. spec production cars. Are we going to be getting these headlights right off the bat with the 1st batch of Beetles? I really want to pick up a Platinum Grey turbo asap when they hit dealers in August.

Guessing not... the original NB didn't share its steering wheel with any other model.

Quit whining. Mine only has a gas gauge and two tiny idiot lights. (The gas gauge had only been standard equipment for four years by that point! )

Volkswagen gives price points for 2012 Beetle, targets Mini

Elaborating on our previous details from the New York unveiling of the 2012 much-altered Beetle, Volkswagen North America CEO Jonathan Browning has told Autoblog, "We're aiming to essentially go after the Mini so far as market positioning and price offerings."

That means a price range from $20,000 to $24,000 when the coupe launches worldwide in late September, and between $25,000 and $29,000 for the 2013 convertible. These price ranges take into account the three engines on offer at the start of deliveries: the 2.5-liter five-cylinder, 2.0-liter TDI diesel, and 200-hp 2.0-liter TFSI. There's no telling what the price will be on the hot Beetle R foreseen for mid-2013 with the newest 261-hp "W28" turbocharged inline-five from the Scirocco R.

The pod is, IIRC, appropriately standard on the turbo model. The majority of the buyers for the 2.5 and TDi probably won't miss the stopwatch and boost gauge (when applicable, ie - TDi). The new cluster looks to be worlds better and more readable than the old standard setup. I agree that the gauges in the NB weren't the greatest, though I don't see the new ones as any worse than, say, a Mini's instrumentation.

If VW were planning to go after the Mini with the Beetle, they should have built the car using Polo underpinnings instead of the Jetta's. Of course, we know they did this because they thought the most important market for the Beetle is the US (in which they are correct), and unless I am mistaken, the current Jetta is built in the US...

So again, it was a matter of the bean counters calling the shots...

Try Mexico... the new Passat will be built in Tennessee.

Not quite, but they are a whole lot more reliable than the other source posted.

It is common sense that they will bring an R variant. They are targeting this to the male demographic which means they need a performance offering. Also, they are planning to introduce one unique version a year to keep it fresh....the R will be one of those.

      Thank you for the correction.

But my point remains the same -- since the Jetta is built in Puebla, building the Beetle based on Jetta underpinnings instead of the Polo's is cheaper for VW do to.

At the end of the day, it is still the bean counters calling the shots...

      So some more information...

The 17" base dish wheel is modular. You can change out the chrome center cap *and* the outer trim rings as well. So this is the same wheel with different outer trim rings:

Apparently Volkswagen will have accessories that offer the different trim rings (there is a third variation to this wheel that I don't have photos of yet) and different center caps potentially including colored center caps in addition to the chrome one pictured. So customers will be able to customize the wheels however they like at the dealer.
