Oh well I guess I should update this. The car is ok. I patched the melted fuel lines and built a temporary exhaust from an Mitsubishi evo 8 aftermarket exhaust. Ya its 3.5" diameter now..... huge.

The fire destroyed the emergency brake cables and some other small crap that ill have to fix later. If I had not had a fire extinguisher the car would have quickly turned into a massive fireball. Carpet in the back also caught fire and melted my tig welder leads. Ill post a few pictures later.

I took my little brother down to sowo on Saturday. Missed the show but still got to see tons of awesome cars. I really wish I were able to meet up with more mk 2 people.

If anyone see's any photos of my car at sowo could you please post them up. Tons of people took photos but I'm having a hard time finding any.

Nice, glad to hear it's still kicking!

What did you use for flares? I'm trying to sort something for my '85 2dr Jetta.

Only time I saw your car was on our way out of Helen, driving down Main. I almost didn't recognize it, since I saw the right side (without the janky rear door).

The flares are off of a mk I car. You have to trim them a tad but they fit. There a hair smaller than mk II flares.

Drove it down to the lake through the woods and DIDNT get stuck. Great success.

and my oil drain notch actually worked as I had planned. Awesome.

Forgot to mention my starter died on Me the other day. Had to push start it a fewtimes. I put a vr6 automatic starter on it which has twice the cranking power and weighs 2 pounds less. Hopefully that will help if I ever go hi comp.

Bolts right up like its meant to. Its from a 99 golf vr6 automatic. It doesn't have the stub at the end for the bushing. One less thing to go wrong.

I should take some pictures of the hard stuff. We have had six or seven stock vehicles get stuck down at the bottom of the hill.

I decided to get in the lake with my camera in my pocket on Memorial day, whoops. Got it all fixed now though.

    NACA duct instal.

ignore the strings, they are there to let me see the air movement.

  17. 06-01-2012 11:50 AM #472
How about some fully adjustable cromoly tubular control arms? This is just the start obviously.

better picture of the NACA duct

and a light weight low offset underdrive pulley to slow my alternator down. Ill make the crank pulley and waterpump pulley next.

So for the last month and a half ive been daily driving this thing without a radiator fan. Never had a problem, even stuck in traffic at sowo.

I finally found a fan and made a shroud for it. Now i just have to wire it and mount it.

If you weren't having any issues with cooling, why not mount it under the rad support pushing air through instead of taking up visual engine bay space? Just curious, that shroud looks very nice.

Because I hate pusher fans, and they work much less efficient. Especially at any speed above say 20 mph they block vital air flow.

In. Your fabrication skills are incredibly impressive. Even more so that you're putting all this work into such a well used car.

Happy to see that the sudden down-time didn't mean the end of this project.

I was about to ask for the ball joint spacers and drop plates. :p
