Drivers are pushing gas gauge needles way past 'E' in an attempt to avoid costly gas station stops, but that is leaving more of them stranded on the side of the road with empty tanks and facing potentially costly repairs, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic.

What's that phrase? "Penny wise, dollar foolish..."

They are putting off the inevitable, and costing themselves more time and money in the process. Sounds stupid...

Ive run out of gas once. I wanted to know what the absolute maximum mileage I could get out of the tank was. No big deal to do it once but to do it many times to avoid filling up, thats just dumb.

Huh? How does one even think that works?

Or are these paycheck to paycheck people that budget out every cent, and once that paycheck is spent, they need to make the tank last until the next one?

So what's the reasoning? "Maybe my gas tank actually has five gallons in there it's not telling me about?" "Somehow, this teaspoon of gas remaining in the tank will get me through to next Friday, even though I hammer it away from lights and go 5mph over at all times." What?

If you own a car, but don't have enough in reserve to pay for gas when it needs it, you're doing it wrong. I added $30 a month to my gas budget as soon as prices went above $3.25. And don't tell me you're waiting for payday; you're still doing it wrong.

Probably, but I've lived paycheck to paycheck before, and I never didn't have $500 in reserve in case something came up. Even $200 would do it - if, say, I needed a tank of gas, or my computer **** the bed, or something.

This. I'm tired of stupid people blaming everyone but themselves for their problems.

They should move to Canada and pay $5.60G for premium and see how long they last

Perhaps they just want to take advantage of the $3.89 they save by having AAA bring them one gallon of gas. 'Cause that's totally worth it.

I guess since I've never ever not filled my tank all the way up to the tippy top at 1/8th tank or so (and pumped it a couple of times past the "click" stops, too, for good measure), I don't understand the whole running-out-of-gas concept. You gotta eat, you gotta gas your car up. It's not an expense that's unexpected or sneaks up on you or just "happens." You know it's coming...

When my car broke down last year and had AAA tow it, I was chatting with the tow truck driver. He said he's been dispatched to gas stations for customers ran out of fuel, so they would rather wait an hour for AAA to bring them a gallon of gas than pay for a gallon.

I also have to hold back laughter when I'm inside a gas station and I'll hear people buy $10 of lotto tickets or cigarettes and then ask for $3 on one of the pumps.

It probably costs them a dollar more simply because prices have gone up in the process of waiting another day.

Living around Baltimore i see so many Crown Vics (and others) on 22s to 24s left on the side of the road, assuming, because they ran out of gas. I just want to lecture them to take off their stupid big wheels and maybe they would get better mileage. I know my buddies (non cop/taxi) crown vic only gets like 18mpg stock. I can only imagine what a donked 200k miles + retired copcar/taxi get.

I am amazed at the number of people that will pull into a gas station now, add ONE DOLLAR in gas, then drive off. That only makes sense if they are stopping at every gas station to add a dollar.

A more likely explanation is people put 30 bucks in the tank every week and expect it to last without checking the fuel gage. But now that same dollar amount is 2/3rds the gallons, so they run out.

      People are stupid.

Good point. If prices are rising, its more economical to fill up more often. To a point, of course.

I had somebody in a loud (headers/cam) V8 S-10 running very oversized drag slicks ask me for gas money.

Esspecially in todays cars, it's a good way to burn out a fuel pump. Many fuel pumps are cooled by the gas in the tank, run it dry and it can cause more wear and tear on the pump, ending up as an even more costlier to the person.
We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.

It wont last long(AAA giving a gallon free). If they were smart they would charge $10 for that gallon and a refill fee of $10. I may have stumbled upon a decent hustle. Sell idiots gas on my usual route for inflated prices!

this makes me laugh in my head too. $20 worth of drinks and snacks, $5 or $10 at the pump. complaining to other people how expensive gas is. don't worry though, they have there fridge stocked full of milwaukee's best and full carton of cigs. what more could you ask for!!!

I've had to call AAA at a gas station before. Driving through rural WV and Mideast Ohio at 4am all the gas stations were closed. Finally chickened out after driving around for 20 minutes ON empty and pulled into a gas station. It was closed of course and didn't open for two hours. Gave up and called AAA while sitting at the pump.

I every time I pull up to a pump and see the person before me put in $5.00 worth of fuel.

      I hate people.

You all know how this ends, don't you?

Just like the Explorer tire debacle...we all get some stupid government-mandated system so we don't run out of gas. Just wait. Five years from now, there will be a giant, non-defeatable gas gauge mounted on top of your dash in a huge pod. It will incorporate a heads-up display that shines up on to your windshield. When you hit 1/4 of a tank, a siren will go off, lights will blink, and your seat cushion will shock you until you stop to get gas. Dick Tufeld's voice will blare from your speakers..."Danger! Danger!"...

If you remove the pod, HUD, or seat shocker device, you won't be allowed to renew the tags on your car.

It could be worse. You might run into somebody that thinks rising gas prices means that it takes more gas to drive a certain distance:

That's bad measure. Shouldn't 'top up'.

Huh? The article didn't mention anything about SUVs.

      It also didn't exclude them.

      Unnecessary reply was unnecessary.
