My wife is looking to switch from a career in education to something else, so this may affect my WRX plans. I found out last night that if her commute drastically changes (think suburbs of Hartford to Springfield MA), we'd likely be selling my car to get her into something more efficient (because I'm planning on selling anyways). She's thinking Prius type cars.
I'd end up giving up my testicles and driving her CRV for a few years as its only got 50K miles and has been paid off for awhile. I'd do this until I bought a 4Runner or Xterra or Taco. The upside to all this? If I get rid of my car for her, that means I get a toy car sooner. I'd be looking at the usual suspects found in every TCL thread (S2000, E36/E46 M3, etc)
Driving a CRV is rough but if in a few years it gets you a BMW then its well worth it.
Whats the difference between a Sti and a Wrx as I'm to lazy to google the differences. Price? Looks? Performance? The Sti is faster right?
WRX: About as fast, anywhere from 8-10K cheaper, cheaper insurance, better mileage. The 2011s even got the widebody kit from the STI, so they look very similar.
I won't buy a used WRX/STI as I don't trust the previous owners of these cars. That means I'm looking at 27K for a WRX, and about 35K for an STI. The STI is great, but if I'm dropping that much money on a car, it likely won't be a Subaru.
I've got no real complaints about her CRV...its just boring as hell. I just couldn't justify getting rid of it prematurely considering its been paid off for years, only has 50K miles (its an 06), and has needed oil changes and gas. No unscheduled visits. No warranty work. Nothing. That, and its good for hauling around our two dogs. The wife is well aware though that if I'm basically in driving purgatory while she gets a new car, I will be fixing that in short order with a 3rd car.
We'll be moving in a few years to a house with more garage space. I always figured I'd just wait until then to get my toy. If I'm driving her car and giving up mine, you better believe my timeline is moving up.
So I didn't get the job of my choice but I did get the second one. And you better believe I took it. I'm 24 years old, been working since I was 16, college grad of 2009 and this is the first time I got a career that offers sick time, benefits, and personal time.

Haven't paid any attention to the wheels on the 11s. They're just an updated version of the cuisinart blade looking things right? I disliked my 17 inch denvers when I got them...but I quickly realized I disliked dropping a grand on new wheels even more. I knew I wouldn't be modding this car, so I've left it 100% stock.
I just checked autotrader...turns out a lot of 07s are in the 60-80K mile range. Makes my 30K mile car a little rare. Hopefully I get a decent amount for it.

So would this be an MkV or MkVI? I'm to lazy to research how the Marks are broken down based on looks/year/generation. I lost interest after I lost my MK3 got totaled and I never gave a fuk about my mmmkkkaayy4 Golf. Ik someone here won't mind taking the time to explain. Granted I would learn the history of VW if I ever purchased a car as sweet as this but until then I consider it a waste of brain space. I just can't get into something I don't own

I guess how low should I start with? Should I call this guy in a couple of days and say $15k or is that laughable? My intentions are to get this as low as possible so maybe if I start at $15K it'll end at $15,500 or $16,000

that'd be a MK5 GLI you are looking at.
and as far as the whole turbocharged not being serviced line, as long as the factory maintenance plan was followed and the car wasn't abused like a redheaded stepchild, it should be fine. you might have some carbon build up on the intake valves since it's an earlier DI engine, but really should be alright. as long as there are no odd sounds or smoke on start up and running, you're good to go.
my dad has a 2008 Audi A4 with the same motor, and he has about ~44,000 on it, and it still drives great. he's noticed he's down slightly on mileage, and that could be from the possible carbon build-up. he's getting the 45,000 service performed this week before their road trip east with it, so hopefully he'll get some info.
only thing i can really mention to watch out for, is the high pressure fuel pump and camshaft/follower for the HPFP going bad in a short time. i believe there was a TSB for them to be replaced, so most cases have been solved/replaced, however, make sure to get that checked out.
if all checks out, get that sumbitch chipped and have fun.

Dash said to get it chipped too. Ik its jumping the gun but is installing a chip expensive/pain in the arse? Last thing I need is to install a chip and have the thing setting off ECU codes/failing/sputtering/ etc.... I'm kind of a pu$$y when it comes to this stuff... last thing I want is my "new" car sh!tting the bed because of some mod.
i believe the APR chips are just flashed through the OBD connector and are reliable. you can even get a few different programs and switch through them. ie: 91,93,valet. valet being a very limited program in case you park some place that has valet, they can't **** with your car.
APR chips are indeed pricey though.

As has been mentioned, the main worries will be carbon buildup to to direct injection, and the whole hpfp/cam follower issue. I believe those were remedied by the 08s, so you will just have the carbon buildup issue. From what I've read, there is no true preventative measures to take, you'll just have to suck it up eventually and get the valves cleaned.
I've had a bunch of issues with mine, but none related to those mentioned above. I think I just got a weird example though. I would definitely inquire more about the accident. They'll obviously say it wasn't major. I'd like to kno wwhat their definition of 'minor' is.
You mentioned last night that it was a DSG. Check to make sure the DSG transmission service was done. I think its a couple hundred bucks. Its supposed to be done every 40K miles. Considering the mileage and the fact its at a dealership, I would hope they did they service if it hadn't already been done.
Being in New England, you'll be dealing with crappy weather. When I bought the car I also picked up some blizzaks and steel wheels from Tire rack. With them I am more confident in my car than my wife's awd CRV with all seasons. Other than ground clearance, it'll go through just about anything. My car came with the 17 inch denvers, so what I did was sized down to 16 inch snow tires. because of the increased sidewall, the actual circumference and diamater were largely unchanged.
Mileage is supposed to be a big positive, but I get nowhere near what others claim. My lifetime is around 22mpg. That may be driving style and terrain though. I'll often drive like a dick and CT is very hilly.
If you haven't driven a 6MT yet I would. Hell, if you want to get a feel for what they are like without a salesman watching you you can drive mine (assuming you can drive stick and won't ruin my clutch )
North American Motorsports ( I think they were/are a sponsor here) are big into VWs and are based in Vernon. Yuo can get any of the programs there...APR, GIAC, REVO. Most people say go with whatever your local reputable shop offers as they are all similar and customer service is what matters. The nice thing is they offer them all so you can just wait for a sale/promo being offered by one of them.
If I were keeping my car I'd probably get APR. But I'm not so I won't.
