I had shoulder reconstruction 3 weeks ago and am bored out of my mind. Keep me entertained and post 'em up, just as long as they got fins or rocket-ish styling

And quite possibly my all time favorite

      Jaguar D-Type:

1959 Imperial. Notice the pioneering use of curved sideglass:

Here's a real tailfin humdinger. Packard's last gasp of 1958. The designers had nil funding, so they grafted fiberglass double-fins onto the 1957 Studebaker body. Voila! Twin fins!

My favorite fins are on the 1961 Oldsmobiles. They tricked everyone and put them on the bottom, and called them "skegs". I've always thought they look pretty cool, and visually lower and widen the car nicely. V. Sporty.

The people, the cars, & the friendships are what make up the "scene." Not the fourms, nor the show's or the trophy's. Just knowing that they will go out of their way to give you a helping hand no matter the reason, is golden. People will come and go from the scene, but the true ones have and will always be there after the scene has long gone.

Not many people today remember the Great Tailfin Shortage of 1960. After several years of Detroit, and even many European, manufacturers, flooding of the marketplace with ever-more-radicalized fins on their automobiles, and the public's infatuation with them, it became more and more difficult to find enough tailfin supplies to meet demand. The result was that, by '60 cars with extremely long rear quarters had to make do with severely truncated tailfins as rationing had to be imposed. The 1960 Dodge is one example of this:

Dodge's problems with its tailfins didn't end in 1960. Chrysler's design studios were the scene of much confusion and dissent by the early sixties, with many openly challenging Virgil Exner's continuing application of the by-then increasingly unfashionable fins. In a major disaster of botched interdepartmental communications, one of Exner's memos was misinterpreted by his staff and management, resulting in the somewhat odd-looking "backwards fins" '61 Dodges. "I want to turn this around!" was Exner's statement on the memo, of which he was speaking of the turmoil in the studio, and NOT the fins on the Dodges.

Exner's reaction to the growing rejection of his "babies" the high tailfins of the late fifties, by the early sixties was reflected in the somewhat "angry" expression he put on the face of the 1961 Plymouth. Exner was a man who personalized his designs...
