    Thread: Hybrid Engine Swaps

    1. 05-10-2011 01:27 AM #1
Ok so im sure the purists will hate on the thought of putting something other than a VW or Audi motor into a VW or Audi but I figured I would throw the idea out there anyway. I currently have a 92' GTI shell and ive been toying with the idea of swapping in either a K20 out of an RSX Type-S or building up a 2.0l or 2.3l Duratec motor with some Cosworth bits. My main reason for even thinking of swapping in one of these motors is the reliability, abundance of parts, more aftermarket support, more reliable hp potential, etc. I just wanted to see what some of you guys think about a swap like this. The car is gonna be my daily driver and weekend autocrosser.

Do what you like and whatever your budget dictates. You'll get a healthy dose of jerks coming in here flaming you for it, you have been warned. Also, don't expect to get much if any helpful information on those motor swaps in here, as a byproduct of the aforementioned jerks and the general lack of knowledge/interest in those engines in a VW-centric forum. You might find some interest in one of the general discussion forums, and maybe in the VW hybrid swap forum. Good luck.

It has been done already IIRC. There was a mkII with some sort of Honda engine dropped into the bay. Reception in the VW worlds was, well, awesome.

I recall reading that past the motor mounts, integra hubs fit mkII bearings, but I can't recall much more then that.

IMO, put a k20 in it, do it up, and surprise the **** out of people. It's pretty common knowledge that VW's are "slow cars".

Someone managed to get a vw diesel into a crx so it shoukdnt be hard to get a honda into a vw. Big american 4cyl would be interesting.

Actually, a Cosworth Duratech would be a really cool option, imo. I'm not really a purist in any way, so anything cool or unique I'm all for. When I had my S30 I was looking to do a TB48DE swap (4.8l dohc inline 6 from the Nissan Patrol). The only reason I got any love for it was because it was still nissan/datsun. L series purists hated the idea. Sourcing, buying, and shipping that engine was going to be astronomical in cost, so I dropped the project for lack of funds. However, its still something I would like to do eventually ^_^.

Cosworth parts aren't cheap, by any means.

I think a KA24DE would be kinda cool, but I don't know where you'd source a trans..... SR20 would be better....

I Second this, or possibly the 2.2 Turbo engine out of the 80's Chrysler cars.

The Chrysler Turbo swap has been done before (seen it on here somewhere a long time ago) and should be relatively easy to do, since it was the replacement for the 1.7 that Chrysler borrowed from VW when they first released the Omni/Horizon, and is a VERY similar design.

Go for it. The 2.3 Duratec would be a great motor.

There is also that one guy who put the supercharged Gran Prix motor into a MK2. That was pretty impressive.

Im more looking at having a daily driver thats also a fun weekend autocrosser. So larger and heavier motors are definitely out. My personal opinion is that 200-250hp is more than enough for a light FF car like the GTI. So please I appreciate all the feedback but im not looking to cram a V6 or V8 into the bay, im looking for a light weight, high revving 4cyl.

The K20 puts down 200hp and 150ft lbs. of torque in stock form and it has tons of potential with simple bolt ons and a tune. On the down side it looks like a K20 w/6 speed trans will run roughly $3k-4k for a stock unit.

The Duratec 2.3 with vvt puts down 160hp and 154ft lbs. of torque and can be had with low miles for $600-1k. A 6 speed getrag transmission from an SVT focus can be had for under $1k so that leaves $1k+ to put into the motor before I drop it into the car.

Oh and I didnt even think about an SR or KA, I think the pulsar was a FF car that had an SR in it.

If I were in your shoes I'd go with the MTX75 over the Getrag. Limited slip differential alone for the Getrag is more than the cost of a complete MTX75 including a Quaife. I've owned cars with both transmissions and really didn't see any advantage of the Getrag over the MTX75. You get one extra gear which really isn't worth the cost imo.
