Thread: NOS Mk1 Kamei X1 Body Kit

  1. 05-11-2011 02:34 PM #1
This is a Kamei X1 body kit for a Mk1 Scirocco. This includes the flares, skirts, and front spoiler. Brand new... Never installed.

If you want the rarest-of-the-rare, this is what you need. There maybe more, but I'm only aware of a few other such kits in the US. I've never seen one for sale...much less in brand-new condition.

For the "old school" Scirocco geeks who may remember him, I originally got this kit via Dirk Schneider in Germany. I've had it sitting in storage for something like 10 years now. It was originally going to go on my G60 swap '77, but when that became more of a real race car I realized this "street appearance kit" was not appropriate, so I went for the real Gr2-style fenders to clear real race slicks.

I kept the X1 kit to put on a show/street car someday. But it is pretty clear that isn't going to happen, so it is time to find someone who would appreciate it.

A note about the condition: For those who may be unfamiliar with the kind of plastic that was used on these, it is ABS plastic with a very smooth finish. So it is reasonably sturdy stuff, but takes on minor surface scratches very easily. And when I say "easily" I mean almost just by dragging your fingernails on it. So there are some scratches just from being in storage for 25 years. But even if it didn't have any scratches at all, you would want to paint this kit...there's just no way to keep the surface perfect in the real world.

Other than the above note, the kit is in perfect shape and ready to go. If you pay the full asking price plus shipping, I'll include an X1 rear spoiler which is technically not new but in perfect shape. The original hardware was never used...I even have the original box. (not available separately)

    Asking $1200 + shipping.

So would it be bad if I bought this, then started looking for a MK1 Rocco to install it on?

If only I had the money. This is super sweet. And the price is actually a steal. I've seen lesser kits for 16V Roccos go for this much.
    Good luck with the sale.

Hey Neal, does this kit have some kind of a rear valance?

Nope. The rear flares taper into the back edge of the fender.

    Springtime bump!

By the way, Kamei says it isn't ABS, but their own proprietary plastic called "Durokam".

Mornin! That kit.....mmmmm.... I like. Nothin covers the rear facia, right? Is this kit specific to NA bumpers or Euro?

Nothing for the rear. The flares just taper into the rear quarter.

I've never fully mounted the kit...just a test fit on a bare shell. And I don't have a Scirocco with any sort of normal bumpers to try now. So I can't say with absolute 100% certainty that I've actually seen how the bumpers line up.

However, I am 99.99% sure the kit is NOT specific to bumper style. There are no mouldings or creases that indicate anything like that, unlike the mk2 kits.

If I'm somehow totally wrong about all that, it would be for Euro bumpers. I personally purchased the kit from a fellow Scirocco-nerd in Germany. So maybe the US bumper ends could interfere? I highly doubt it, but can't guarantee.

Speaking of Dirk, is he still around? I was in Germany a couple years back and went to stop by his place and could not find his house. I was expecting to see a Scirocco outside since I did not remember the actual address.

Do you know anybody looking for a shell? Somehow I ended up with two

No idea about Dirk. Haven't heard of him in years.

I've got my own '76 shell. Perhaps I can interest you in a 3rd?

I do hope he is OK. Great guy and friend to all us Scirocco peeps.

I would think that Doug T. would know.

Jim - this is Craig (NSU RS6) from the RS6.com forum.

That is great news. Dirk was a great guy to deal with, I am glad to hear he is well. I wonder what he is driving now? The NOS Zender upper and lower rear wing I got from him will be on my Scirocco when done. The eurobumpers I got from him will for sale here soon - I do not need two sets. Will also be posting an NOS Zender body kit soon - it is more than complete: 2X fender flares/rockers, 2X rubber welting, instructions and all.

Busted. I just HAD to have a 450HP twin turbo all wheel drive Panzer to plow through Seattle's rain. Plus - the Daytona Gray of the RS6 is nearly a shoe in for the Scirocco's Cirrus Gray. Pictures of them together forthcoming this summer.

Edit for NSU RS6: NSU is the German acronym for Neckarsulm, Germany, where Audi's "RS" cars are built.

Dirk is still driving his convertible. And a GAZ 69 he recently acquired and brought back to life. You can find him in the German Scirocco forum: sciroccoforum.de
