so the this morning i went to drop the engine back into my 1.8t...... the brand new engine that i bought off of another member on here a couple of weeks ago......and low and behold......WALAHHHH I got one with an automatic crankshaft for my 5speed!!!

now let me tell you..... they do not fit into eachother do to that tricky little pilot bearing fellow on the end of the manual crank.....huh....

now Audi, you know your cars break all the time, why would you not make it easy and just put the same crank in both the autos and manuals??? and further more YOU KNEW IWAS GOING TO HAVE TO DO AN ENGINE SWAP AND DID THIS ON PURPOSE TO ME just kidding.......

    but seriously.......

this is a thread for all of the poor souls, like me out there, who did not know there was a difference until the engine was going back in and life went bad REALLY FAST.

Can you not take the pilot bearing out?
Throw an Audi engineer down a hole with a ladder and he will fashion a shovel from it and tunnel his way out

Shaving it down is pretty common. All the guys that go from auto to manual do it.

Why go through the trouble of swapping out cranks when you can just shave it?? I don't understand people over complicating things sometimes.

because swapping them is more reliable and less work unless you own a machine shop which almost none of us do. and then you can also check the connecting rod bearings/main seal.

Shaving the crank is not rocket science and does not require a machine shop. But you do your methods and I'll do mine. BTW check my five speed swap thread and see how easy it is.

i wanted to update you and let you know that i ended up cutting my crank with a dremel and hand filing it with a flat file to perfection. I also used an alternator bearing inside a fidenza 12lb flywheel form ECS. It is running beautifully now!
