I believe they will work on either side. I'd be happy to let you try one. If it doesn't work, I'll happily refund you as I think this would be an interesting experiment. The both have identical part numbers and look identical except for one aspect. See picture below:



The only difference I see is that the passenger side has an angle cut into it, whereas the driver side is squared off. I'd try installing the driver side, if it doesnt fit right, I'd take a hot razor blade to it and cut off the corners, like shown in the picture.

I would think the drivers side is heavier duty as well, since it likely gets used way more often than the passenger side. I dont own a new beetle, but if their windows are "auto down" on the driver's door, you might even add this feature to the passenger side, which is cool.

Like I said, I'd like to know for myself too, so If you wanna try it, let me know
