My first tank netted 38.9 for combined city /hwy.

Hey All,
Just finished my first tank in the new JSW and while it turned out a bit lower than i was expecting. I did mash on it a few times and had some city driving etc.. but hit 32 mpg over 444 miles.. my commute nets me about 42-44, but i want to get the combined up closer to 40.
Thoughts on increasing mileage? Besides the obvious drive slower and no sport mode
Thanks

I'm finding that the hotter the engine is, the more efficient it becomes. When I'm trying to be frugal I shift early, but sometimes I ignore the upshift light if I anticipate traffic, hills, etc.. Also try mixing in some bio-fuel as it has more lubricating properties and that helps the engine. i have a manual transmission and I'd like to think that I'm smarter than DSG, although I don't shift as fast.

thanks! yeah i filled up first time and got a little nervous when the station said 5% biofuel.. i though manual said something about not using that, but i figure if its all the station (major station) has, it should be good.

If I keep my speeds reasonable on the highway I easily get 50 MPG for 3 hour trips to visit family out of state. Car is too much fun tho to keep my MPG's that hight.

Your milage will increase as your motor gets broken in. Just be patient.
#11
Yep... you won't start averaging in the 40s until you have about 7-8k on the clock.
Don't worry... it'll happen.![]()

1) with roof rack, no bike, no a/c, just windows-> 38+/- and highway mid 40's
2) with roof rack AND bike -> 35 avg.
3) without roof rack on highway -> 51 was my best
typical distance on full tank with 90% highway driving with rack and no bike-> 600.

I must be doing something wrong! I'm only getting 29 mpg. Mostly city driving, and I accelerate slowly.
#14
More miles on the car will net higher mpg's. Gotta break everything in and get that compression all the way up to where it should be.
Also, don't be afraid to hold a gear a little longer, and give it the beans every now and then. Diesels love being driven like you're a 16 year old. Don't worry about MPG and it will go up and up and up.
#15
"mostly city driving".... stop and go driving is not how you get MPG out of a diesel- its in long distance highway driving. Took a quick glance at where you live- dude you live in riverside, what do you expect? If you do mostly city stop and go- a hybrid is your answer. open roads- tdi

I have only 1000 miles on my JSW TDI and when I take long hwy trips I'll see 44 - 46 mpg for the trip average (i.e. Portland to Cannon Beach and Back - about 200 miles round trip averaged 46 with the A/C on and 3 dogs and a wife in the car)
#18
38 mpg @ 80 mph
44 at 65 mph
55 @ 45 mph
I only see the higher numbers when I'm traveling backroads. I'd rather get there quicker than save $2.50 in fuel.

I have a little over 33,000 on the odometer and just put new rims and tires one this winter/early spring. I have been making a run to where I grew up regularly since sept for business. Its about 140 miles one way. I was easily getting 40mpg doing about 72-74 but once I put the rims and tires on that number dropped to around 37. Now this is all with cruise control. They upped the speed limit in VA to 70 on much of 64 so I've been setting the cruise on 75-77. This didn't really change the mpgs. Now with the summer fuel I can push the car all the way there and get into the 40's.
Best mpg is 48 doing 55mph on hilly back roads
Around town I average 25 or so. I have a heavy foot but its still far better than my Jeep GC V8
Average is 34 I think right now on the computer in the dash.

oh yeah, forgot to mention, try accelerating briskly (not a drag race, but not a slow roll on the power, either) get to your speed and try to maximize the time you are actually driving that speed. I find that I can operate the motor at 1100 rpm at a given speed (almost like coasting), but I do briskly get to that speed, sometimes skipping up several gears. Say I want to drive 45mph I may accelarate slow from first to second and then more aggressively from second to third and then get close to 45 mph and jump up to 5th or 6th and feather the throttle. This yields me decent mpg and my car ins't broken in yet with 1100 miles on the odo.

my buddy has about 10 grand on his TDI JSW
he drove up to canada from chicago on 2 tanks.
something insane like 650+ per tank.

My average right now is 35.8 mpg mixed driving, but it's my fault I put some heavy interlagos on the car oh well....need some lighter 18"s.
The best I ever did with the biolines still on the car was 743 miles to one tank.
It's ok if you disagree with me, I can't force you to be right.

36K on a '10 JSW TDI with the DSG. I live in a hilly area and consistently get 37. With some fair percentage of a given tank done on the highway, I see 42- mostly at 75. Thrilled with the car and the mileage. My wife has an '06 Civic Hybrid. Similar milage, but the Civic is like driving a golf cart.
I'm looking at replacing the Civic with a Golf TDI 2dr stick. I'm a bit concerned with going back to the stick because it is so much more entertaining and not being able to meet the same mileage. The DSG shifts at such low RPM, I'm not sure I'll be able to keep the revs down to the same level in order to get the same milage.

I noticed that I get better fuel efficiency with constant cruise control in both street or highway. Anyone else agree with this?

I average right around 41.5 in mixed city/highway.
Best trip to date

I drive mostly hwy in So Cal. My first two tanks were at about 34 mpg combned. I did get a bit worried. But after the first 2000 miles I started to see a good increase. To date my combined average for all miles driven is 39.5 but that is mostly hwy miles. On the way to work I will see MPG as high as 52 on the way home from work I see 40 - 41 mostly because of elevation. I am about to hit 6000 miles. Great car.

I don't follow the Lie-O-Meter. I use a calculator.
I'm just over 3000 miles and have only managed to average 32mpg.
This with combined city and hwy. I drive 17 miles one way to work every day.
I'm running aftermarket wheels 18X8.
I drive it like I stole most of the time and will continue to do this until I hit the 5000 mile mark or not. At that time I will have a tune done and probably still be putting my foot in having more fun![]()
I'm happy for now. My last vehicle was getting 17mpg and my Wife's Expedtion gets 14mpg and cost $80.00 to $90.00 to fill up![]()
