TDI JSW owners please enter.. MPG's

I typically get between 550 and 580 miles per tank...and I usually fill up between 13.7 13.8 gallons...rarely do I fill up 14.0 when I let the miles til empty get close to 0...which, of course, is terrifying.

By my calculations, that is between 40 and 42 mpg. For the most part I drive it nicely, but every few trips I have to drive it like I stole it.

when I drove 100mi. everyday, 5 days a week, I used to average ~590mi/tank, averaging 42MPG, driving 70

now that I'm down to 6mi./day, it's down to ~490mi/tank, averaging no less than 30MPG.

nice mileage, but remember that little symbol next to 58.5MPG means average...

I average right around 41.5 in mixed city/highway.

On some back roads here in socal I have average 55mpg with five people in the car. My engine is still new and I have whispbars on 24/7. I hope to see higher mpgs in the next 15000 miles.

This is through my Gas Cubby App, total average is 37.3. This is a pretty even mix of freeway and city driving. A lot of the freeway driving is in LA traffic...:bang head: Love the car and i'm always trying to get better MPG.

First post, though I should've posted many thank-yous before now. I owe this forum a ton for letting me lurk while I was taking the JSW dive.

So a guy rammed my Prius a couple weeks ago, and I took the insurance money and bought a JSW TDI MT with 33K on it. I was really curious to see what kind of mileage I'd get if I started driving like a normal person again (ie., occasional burnouts, Sebastien Ogier fantasies and whatnot). My commute is 10% local streets and 90% hilly and curvy divided highway at 65 mph, 35 miles each way.

I picked the car up in Northern Jersey and drove it home to NY on thruway-type roads. I waa shocked -- 50 mpg on that trip! Better than the Prius on highways. But I wondered what my normal commute might look like.

My first three tanks have been consistent -- right around 580 miles on each tank, 42.8-43 mpg. I'm really psyched. I was okay driving like an old man in the Prius, because hypermile-ing was rewarding, economically. But it sure was no fun. I have taken a bit of a hit, but actually like driving again.

Anyway, thanks all for providing me with tons of advice and info over the last couple of weeks. Glad you all have posted so much info. Will post more once my Thule Aeroblades are mounted, see if the mileage takes any hit.

Question for you guys..are you venting your tanks (so it'll fill all the way up to the very rim of the fill tube)? How do you know you're getting consistency between mileage calculations? Plus, if you could fill it all the way to the brim, the range/tank would be substantially greater, too.

First, there is no way to 'vent' the new cars. I usually fill until the pump stops and then round it up to next dollar. If I'm on a road trip, then I may fill until I see the fuel but that usually ends up with me splashing diesel on my shoes and having to hear about the smell for the next few hours.

I'm approaching 40K miles and here my breakdown:
Around town: I average about 37
Full highway at 60-65: averaging about 45
With kayaks on top or pulling a U-Haul on highway: drops to low 30s

Hopefully, no more U-Hauls for a while and I'm getting a kayak trailer so I don't have to have them on the roof.

since i drive mostly on city streets, MPG-minded folks would have me drive a hybrid, and yeah, i would probably get 40mpg outta of a hybrid. but give me a manual and gobs of torque and i'm happy. i'll be curious to see how the DSG-shifted jetta hybrid drives though.

Only tracked 1400 miles to date, but pulling 40.2mpg average in mixed driving/commuting. Took a trip to Portland and back and pulled 46.9mpg on that trip. Not bad with only a tick over 2000 miles on it. Definitely more economical to drive than my Jeep (10 city, 17 highway).

I have 20k on my car.... like my 5th post on here tho... I do roughly 80-100 miles a day in my car

40 miles of my trip im going 55-65mph

next 40-60 miles are 80mph cruise control

im averaging 36.8-39.2 for the past 8k miles

car is on stock biolines and dsg no roof rack and only one passanger

I am averaging 33-34 mpg. I have 3500 miles clocked so far. I am in traffic a lot. I would say 90% stop and go. 10% cruising. I did replace my 16" Biolines with some 17x8 Phoenix wheels from a CC.

TDI MPG's numbers are nice to see and are a good selling point for VW. But we need to really look at the numbers.

3 people at my office (including me) all have 2010 JSW's. What's funny is that I have an "S" the other guy has an "SE" and the third a "TDI".

We always have to listen to the TDI guy brag about his mileage, which I admit, I'm a little jealous. So one day I say to him "You know, with how high current diesel prices are compared to regular unleaded, I wonder how much that offsets the MPG's".

He has every single receipt from every fill-up since buying the car, and said he was going to figure it out. About a week later he comes in with the results, which really surprised me.

At current gas prices it would take 10 years to break even with the SE (which cost $2500 less than TDI) and 20 years to break even with the S (which cost $5000 less than TDI).

So, if you're buying the TDI based on MPG's alone, you're not saving money in the long run; unless you keep it 20 years.

There is another way to look at it. Since I bought the car, I've spent around $5k in fuel and gone over 60k miles. According to fuelly, that averages out to about 8.7 cents per mile. Since my car is my business vehicle (as opposed to my pickup truck which is my personal vehicle), the IRS stated operating allowance is 55 cents per mile. Additionally, the car is a green vehicle, so the tax write off there also offset the initial buy in. Basically, after 2 years the TDI is ahead of the gasser for me, fiscally. In addition, it is better equipped, and more fun to drive.

Right now, the cheapest place to get RUG is at $3.86. The exact same station has diesel at $3.89.

My last fill up was at 42 mpg (figured using actual numbers not the vehicle average). It was around 46.

this is an important consideration. at certain stations near me, diesel is the same price as super (what i put in my 1.8T passat). at others, they put a 10 cent or more premium on diesel. makes a huge difference in the long run.

When I did the tune there was a dip in mileage because I couldn't keep my foot out of it. I still can't.

Then when I did the full exhaust, my mileage went up. I'm starting to be better about controlling the throttle on the freeway, but it's still to fun to drive this car so on the streets my average goes way down.

About 8 fill ups with stock 17s averaged about 37.7ish. As high as 39.5. This is from December to March.

About 6 tanks since the 18 inch HRE eurmesh wheels with falcons 36 mpg with same exact driving style. High of 36.8

13k miles 2012 DSG.

Cant believe the hit I took with the wheels. I will have to weigh them in a couple thousand miles when I rotate them.

I don't follow the Lie-O-Meter. I use a calculator.

I'm just over 3000 miles and have only managed to average 32mpg.
This with combined city and hwy. I drive 17 miles one way to work every day.

I'm running aftermarket wheels 18X8.

I drive it like I stole most of the time and will continue to do this until I hit the 5000 mile mark or not. At that time I will have a tune done and probably still be putting my foot in having more fun

I'm happy for now. My last vehicle was getting 17mpg and my Wife's Expedtion gets 14mpg and cost $80.00 to $90.00 to fill up

I have found my car is so close on the MPG I stopped checking it with a calculator. Might be something wrong with the one on your car?

The dash computer gives me 40mpg overall, but that is over-enthusiastic.

Calculator gives me 35mpg average (Chevron) and 37mpg on B5. This is with 20%/80%, city/hwy with good amount of highway stop/go.

Car has 1800 miles on it so far.

Speaking of biodiesel, there is only one B5 truck station in my region. The remaining stations with biodiesel use the Propel fuel....but B20 flavor.

I'm very happy using the B5 since it not only gains me more MPG (6 cents more per gallon), but provides the lubricity that ULSD leaves out. I don't want any HPFP issues in the future!

I get 42-43 on my back roads commute to work.

44-45 on highway trips.

And about 38 with a more or less even split of my commute and city driving.

According to my wife, I pretty much drive the piss out of it on a regular basis.

Tampa city/suburban traffic with some (5 miles each way) highway traffic on a 35 mile each-way commute.

Tampa is sea-level...mostly flat, some rolling hills.
