Ok folks my 87 cabby with an 020 manual transmission is leaking gear oil from both sides of the tranny where the axels insert. I don't have much experience with this area of a vehicle so I'm not sure the tech lingo of the parts, but I believe my issue is with a couple of seals. If anyone could help me with a few questions I would be very appreciative.
1. What is he name of the seals/gaskets that are leaking?
2. Is this likely my only issue, or is there an underlying reason both sides are leaking?
3. Is this the kind of job that can be done without removing the tranny?
Thank you in advance to all of you dedicated cabby gurus. I have learned much from reading other peoples posts over the last two years but this time I need some more info.

You have to upload your pictures to a hosting site like: photobucket, snapfish then cut and past that url in to your post.
I would imagine it is the out put bearing races... I had that happen to me, and I ended up swapping out the final drive, but I have an automatic and it was really really easy.

Anyone have any ideas on this part? Like if leaving it out is an option, or where to get a new one.
#13
never had to get one myself but that looks like a dealer only part to me. Someone here with a working ETKA (mine isn't) could get you the part number.
Your other source for all things dealing with VW transmission is BrokeVW he usually cruises the threads but here is a link to his site

I believe Broke carries them in stock.
He also says that it's OK if the're in two (or even three) pieces, because, once everything is assembled, there's nowhere for them to go:

if we had some ham, we could have some ham and cheese sandwiches if we had some cheese.
