I was reading MTs review of the Hyundai Accent for the price of $17k. For an Accent? I just built the cheapest Accent Hyundai offers (the GLS sedan) and as soon as you go with the automatic and the premium package, you're at almost $17.3. For that? Why even sell a subcompact if it isn't either A) going to offer much better mileage B) offer a real cost savings. An elentra comparably equipped is only $1500 more!

I suspect the iQ will do as poorly as the Smart cars.
one except is the Mini Cooper.

Once again, comparing one car with destination charge to other cars without destination charge. Misleading reporting. In fact, the iQ would cost slightly less than the 500.

iQ = 15,995 with dest charge
      Fiat 500 = 16,000 with dest charge
      Mazda 2 = 14975 with dest charge

Additionally, if the iQ comes with a CVT automatic transmission standard as Autoblog reports, a comparable Fiat 500 would start at $17,000 and a Mazda 2 at $15,775.

Not that this makes TCL points any less valid, just that inaccurate reporting bugs me.

I must have missed it but when did FIAT commit to an electric 500?

Let's all remember this car comes standard with a/c, automatic transmission, power windows, a decent stereo... and IIRC - this car is very quiet and comfortable riding inside.
If it also has cruise control for $16k (with destination), that's actually a decent price for all the stuff (and the Scion/Toyota badge).

      This isn't a Smart.
This is a car that is actually comfortable in a way that most small cars are not... it's like a Smart car made by somebody like Mercedes.
(and why Aston chose it for the eco rebadge)
If urban dwellers test drive this car, it will sell well.
      I predict.

I got a whole barrel of Meh after sitting in the thing for a while at the NY auto show. Besides the fact that its got the characterstic Toyota ugly stick thing going on, it felt incredibly cramped and claustrophobic to me inside. I don't think a clear roof like my smart would remedy that fact.
It was impressed by its ability to fit a seat in the back, but I also feel like that overall it compromises too much to the other passengers in the front for it.
Even with the better drivetrain, I would still choose the smart only because it doesn't feel like a dungeon.
Or for that absurd amount of money, I would get the 500.

You have an 09 Jetta and you make these comments in regards to styling?

Maybe you missed what the IQ has done in Europe but the reviews raved about it and its packaging. It is far superior to the Smart, sorry.

Ouch, that's a lot more than it should be. I was actually looking forward to these coming out and was hoping they'd be priced in the 10-12k range for a stripped out model. Maybe some day I'll pick one up on the used car market to mess around with.

      OVER PRICED!

That thing is not worth a penny over 13,500 even as it is equipped. I'd say closer to 12k give or take a couple of hundred.

It would have been nice if they offered a stripper (or close to) model with a real manual transmission for $12-13K. That, I imagine, would sell like hot cakes.

Ok so I'm curious. What are the actual numbers on the iQ in the ROW?

      MPG
      0-60
      etc?

I was expecting a $11,995 price point and hoping for $9995. At $10,000 I'd have tried to fit my fat butt in one just for the laughs but at $16,000.... I'd rather pick up a fairly lightly used LS430 and deal with 20mpg. Apples to Lahmas but whatever.

      edited to include google info

Just found this thread on a UK site... corrected mpg runs from 19.2mpg to 50.8mpg.

Price seems reasonable considering the amount of standard equipment, though it may be a challenge to get consumers to consider it because they won't realize the price includes that much.

I don't know, I think the iQ is definitely one of Toyota's much better efforts of late. Like the Prius and the Tacoma, it's one of the more compelling vehicles you'll find in a Toyota showroom these days.

Bland does not = ugly My MkV is a better looking Corolla then a Corolla!

The iQ is just UGLY, just like mostly every Toyota sold in the states, the Cygnet fixes most of the issues, but I guess thats what you pay extra for.
From anecdotal evidence, this cars doesn't seem to be moving in too much into smart sales in Europe.
I personally just didnt like it. I wanted to, I love small cars and I loved the idea of the 2 + 1 config, it felt cramped. If I needed a larger car then the smart, I would rather get either a 500/Panda sized car. The backseat is utterly useless for anybody of ample size, and just having the seat there affects the comfort of the front seat passengers.
I love my smart for its ability to make both passengers comfortable and thats it, the iQ has to compromise too much for me, and in turn I felt cramped. The seat didn't go back far enough for me, and the seat design was inferior to my smarts.
I think it was a good effort, but it didn't win me over.

I don't get why people are comparing this to the Versa & co.

The Yaris exists to fight the Versa. The Scion iQ is hear to fight for the niche market being paved by Smart/Fiat and perhaps even Mini.

It iQ is sort of cute, funky, and comes pretty well loaded for a small car. Considering it's still cheaper than many bigger competitors when you price those out I don't see the problem.

Comparatively equipped hatchback to hatchback? Not hardly.

      And I like the iQ.
      There.. I said it.
It's a smartly packaged city car without trying to be overly cute.
