I got a whole barrel of Meh after sitting in the thing for a while at the NY auto show. Besides the fact that its got the characterstic Toyota ugly stick thing going on, it felt incredibly cramped and claustrophobic to me inside. I don't think a clear roof like my smart would remedy that fact.
It was impressed by its ability to fit a seat in the back, but I also feel like that overall it compromises too much to the other passengers in the front for it.
Even with the better drivetrain, I would still choose the smart only because it doesn't feel like a dungeon.
Or for that absurd amount of money, I would get the 500.

Ouch, that's a lot more than it should be. I was actually looking forward to these coming out and was hoping they'd be priced in the 10-12k range for a stripped out model. Maybe some day I'll pick one up on the used car market to mess around with.
#40
OVER PRICED!
That thing is not worth a penny over 13,500 even as it is equipped. I'd say closer to 12k give or take a couple of hundred.
#41
It would have been nice if they offered a stripper (or close to) model with a real manual transmission for $12-13K. That, I imagine, would sell like hot cakes.

Ok so I'm curious. What are the actual numbers on the iQ in the ROW?
MPG
0-60
etc?
I was expecting a $11,995 price point and hoping for $9995. At $10,000 I'd have tried to fit my fat butt in one just for the laughs but at $16,000.... I'd rather pick up a fairly lightly used LS430 and deal with 20mpg. Apples to Lahmas but whatever.
edited to include google info
Just found this thread on a UK site... corrected mpg runs from 19.2mpg to 50.8mpg.

Price seems reasonable considering the amount of standard equipment, though it may be a challenge to get consumers to consider it because they won't realize the price includes that much.
I don't know, I think the iQ is definitely one of Toyota's much better efforts of late. Like the Prius and the Tacoma, it's one of the more compelling vehicles you'll find in a Toyota showroom these days.

The iQ is just UGLY, just like mostly every Toyota sold in the states, the Cygnet fixes most of the issues, but I guess thats what you pay extra for.
From anecdotal evidence, this cars doesn't seem to be moving in too much into smart sales in Europe.
I personally just didnt like it. I wanted to, I love small cars and I loved the idea of the 2 + 1 config, it felt cramped. If I needed a larger car then the smart, I would rather get either a 500/Panda sized car. The backseat is utterly useless for anybody of ample size, and just having the seat there affects the comfort of the front seat passengers.
I love my smart for its ability to make both passengers comfortable and thats it, the iQ has to compromise too much for me, and in turn I felt cramped. The seat didn't go back far enough for me, and the seat design was inferior to my smarts.
I think it was a good effort, but it didn't win me over.

I don't get why people are comparing this to the Versa & co.
The Yaris exists to fight the Versa. The Scion iQ is hear to fight for the niche market being paved by Smart/Fiat and perhaps even Mini.
It iQ is sort of cute, funky, and comes pretty well loaded for a small car. Considering it's still cheaper than many bigger competitors when you price those out I don't see the problem.

Thats too bad, I kind of like this car. The 12-13k price range would have been perfect.

Sorry man, this country still buys cars by the pound. This thing is ridiculous as anything but a city runabout and is a shockingly poor value for an economical car. Too dated to be taken as some kind of styling statement, offers nothing, literally, over competitors in its class. As for it's standard features, watch them disappear in 6-12 months to get the base price down.
Me? I'd take the other Japanese Co disposable econobox with a real trunk an A/C for a cool 5k less.

If TCL agrees that this car is a bad value- it will surely be a hot seller.
And this car's sales success - like most small cars - really depends on the price of gas.
If gas prices go up again later this years, this car will sell well.
And no- I would not buy this car.
I like clutch pedals.

I'd like to know more...
I see a 1 liter, 1.3 liter and a 1.4 diesel available. I also see manual and cvt options. I figure were getting a the cvt but which engine and what's the difference?

I am currently driving a (rented) Fiat 500 and tend to agree. The iQ's mileage would have to be truly stellar to make a difference - but who is driving these so many miles/year that it really matters?
The 500 I am driving also has automatic everything, red brake calipers behind aluminum rims, satellite radio, and a sunroof. and a nice interior. I am not familiar with the base level pricing and value on these small cute cars - but don't most of them come with decent base equipment? Not sure the iQ would really stand out, there.
Once US Americans step outside the overwhelmingly present price/volume attitude, my guess is that $1,000 here or there anyway is less important than practicality, a nice interior, and the (somewhat ill-defined) cuteness factor.
Although I have to say, from the looks and questions I am getting, my anecdotal experience is the 500 seems to attract most attention outside a disappointing gap in the 20-40 year old range...![]()

Agreed, and that's our loss. Certainly this car isn't for everyone and I think it's amiss to compare it to the Mazda 2, Yaris, Fit, cars with 4 seats and a good size trunk. It's not the same buyer. Instead look to the buyers of the Fiat 500, smart, and Mini Coupe.
Autoblog (reporting from Toyota press release) says 1.3 liter with CVT. Let's say 98hp, 1900 lbs and you're talking 0-60 at 13 seconds, about a second quicker than the smart fortwo.

Wow, just wow.
This over priced gimmick has a 1.3L and you cannot get it with a stick.
That is simply stupid, even in the US. Small engines need a stick to be more flexible and practical.
The more I learn about this overpriced toy the less I like it.

The only real issue with comfort in the smart was that my leg rested against the shifter and the parking brake left an impression on my thigh that I can now use to keep my 12" Subway meatball sub warm until lunch. Oh hell who am I kidding I've never had a sub survive the trip home.
