I've heard that another mk4 burnt to the ground because of it. I think I remember the pictures.

there was a video, it starts to burn slowly and they dont have anything to stop it with so they just sit there and watch the car burn down.

As you've found out, car firewalls (or any for that matter), are not impervious to fire/extreme heat. They just slow things down relative to fire/heat entering the passenger compartment. What you had happen to you was the rough equivalent to a blowtorch held against the material. Doesn't take long to fail.

At least you weren't hurt, except in the pocketbook.

Better luck soon...makes me feel like a king with the typical Christmas tree of CELs in most VW's.

Yeah that makes sense. I figured it's breaking point would have been higher.

I gotta rip out the material tomorrow. I'm gonna see if I can light it with a regular lighter.

After work I started my next little project. Shaving my engine cover. My plan as of now (changes daily) is to have the cover sprayed the color of my wheels once I'm finished shaving them.

I'm covering the holes with fiberglass and then sanding it smooth. I'll see how that works out once I wake back up.

I didnt see it until now lol. You can only have one emission item in NJ as not ready or unsupported. Since you already have an O2 sensor delete what you can do is put a resistor for the SAI and enrich the start up fuel so it heats the cat faster and the ECU thinks the SAI is there or I can delete the SAI for you and you run your rear O2 senaor with a spacer. Unless you find a friendly shop

Wow i shouldn't have said all that on a public forum lol.

Edit: Im not soliciting or trying to sell anything here.

Gonzzz do you do any TDI ECU work? Not really a maintenance question, and certainly not paramount...

So, I'm leaving the movies with my girlfriend, (saw Planet of the Apes. it was awesome) and I'm leaving the parking lot and I see a "Paramount Towing Services" truck. First thing that comes to mind is, "Well, if their maintenance really was Paramount, they wouldn't have had to call Paramount huh? ...........Man, Ant would be so proud of me." then i laughed and realized I was really lame and that when I got home to tell you this pointless story, I would realize that it is pointless. So, I am very sorry for telling you that story.

Nice, thanks! Looks like it resists pretty well. A bit of smoldering from the backing stuff maybe?
