I really want us to have a open discussion thread on autocross and trackdays.I'm attending my first one of each in oct. and wanna chat with people who have done it
Share pics, info, tips, setups lets get this going
The Autox is a PCA event here in sarasota, and the track is sebring
car specs
Kw front coils,koni rear.
Brakes are 10.1 front, and soon to be rear disc
stock sways(hoping for a shine rear bar before then)
What are a good set of pads for street but also good enough for a couple hours on track?

maybe ferodo brake pads?
but the race pads will squeek on the street until they get up to their higher operating temp

Love these, so much more relevant conversations than "how do i get more stance!?" threads
There is no pad that does both well. Buy a dedicated track only pad and rotor set and just swap for events. It only takes a few minutes a side, and besides you should bleed your brakes before/after every track eventThat way you will get longer life out of both sets of pads, rather than cooking your street pads or glazing your racing pads trying to get one to do both duties.
I really like Porterfield R4's. They have lasted the best out of any pads I have used. Carbotech, Hawk and PAGID are also good, and there is a long list of others too.

I really need more brake for sebring.on stock 10.1 and rear drums the stopping is scary especially with power.
I'm really wanting to find a shrine racing sway bar too

Im taking my gti to its first track day this saturday, I will for sure get lots of pictures\video. I usually take my m coupe, but I wanted to try out my gti for a day session this time
The only suspension mods I have are raceland coils, and a more track tuned alignment (1.5* camber front, 2* rear, and .1 toe front) I will be running street tires on my 15x7's. Im guestimating about 90hp from my 8v (276 cam, header, lw flywheel, tinkered MAF, and exhaust). I really want to get a big rear sway bar next, and suspension bushing refresh w\ poly.
Im not too worried about braking since I probably wont get above 100 on the straights anyways, Im running 10.1 fronts and stock rear disks with PBR Metallic Pads.
Im already ordering race seats for it. Just driving around twisties Im slipping around and having to brace myself for every tiny turn.
For pads I wouldnt recommend getting one set of pads for do-it all driving. Using race pads on the street will fry them, using street pads on track will fry them.

I found the 11in. Corrado set up to be a bit overkill and not worth the weight penalty. I switched back to 10's and put EBC red pads and it was phenominal. I found the best feature was stepping up to a 22mm master cylinder. Neuspeed race springs are an economical way to get great handling without ruining your daily's ride.. A 22mm sway in front with a 28mm sway in the back will really get the car to rotate.

I would def caution to bear in mind the complete suspensions setup when suggesting front sway bars, some setups need them others don't
Also I would recommend to anyone (especially without a baffled pan) to run a 1/2qt over full on the dipstick. This helps maintain oil pressure in long hard corners. Alignment is also a over looked thing sometimes, street tires take a lot of camber to keep the tires flat in the corners to give you the best grip, and it is SUPER easy to set yourself in your driveway or garage. All you need is 4 jackstand, 2 flat pieces of square tube and some fishing line![]()

Me personally, I wouldnt touch my alignment, unless you have camber plates in the front. Using the smaller top bolt method for camber, I noticed when moving the spindle in or out, it messes with everything else. Its a lot tougher than you think, unless your really good at it, you could be way out of spec. The slightest toe will make things worse.
#18
That is why you adjust the entire alignment, I hope you are not assuming that you would change one without checking/adjusting the other...
aligning these cars is SUPER easy, you just have to take the time to do it correctly and accurately

i have a question that i hope fits this thread, not worried about my :stance:
whats the best suspension mods that dont include coils or wheels,
im thinking about mk3 plus suspension WITH a2 tierods with ball joint extenders, tie rod flip kit and <-2.5 camber etc......
is there a ideal mix of these mods that really hit a sweet spot?
#20
#21
You don't need excessive camber for a car you normally drive on the street...You will wear out your tires very fast run 2+* of camber daily.
Also the tie rod flip/ball joint spacers are only necessary when you lower the car past where the control arms are parallel, and I don't think the mk2's require the tie rod flip with the spacer, the angles are not parallel from the get go. the tie rod location on mk2's is better than mk1's
I don't see any reason to put mk3 suspension on the car aside from a slightly wider track, you won't see any huge benefits using that suspension. The "sweet spot" is always found in tuning the setup you have, not trying to swap stuff from a diff car![]()

Well I get to miss another 2 autox events. Today (I'm posting from work) and tomorrow. My Jetta is giving me some major issues on the starting and running front. It doesn't want to do either.
I am currently running the following mods:
FK 60/40 mk3 cup kit (sits higher then a tradition mk2 kit)
manual rack, w/ poly bushings and all new ball joints, tie rods etc
APR 28mm rear adjustable sway bar
Rear disc
Corrado 11" fronts w/crossdrilled rotors, hawk pads
15" wheels with hankook tires (they have a 190 treadwear not super sticky)
MK3 GTI seats, medium bolsters (really miss my sparco buckets)
Momo Steering wheel
Short throw with weighted rod
Engine is stock RD 8v with a close ratio tranny.

out of the like 100 pictures my dad took of me, only about 5 were good. Thats what happens when you give a noob a dslrand I forgot to press record on my camera
It was still a blast, i loved the way it handled. I didnt have much understeer, and it just gripped like glue running all seasons, and I was pushing it really hard too. Straight line speed wasnt anything to brag about only got to about 100 on the back straight at VIR. I was going about 85-90 through the uphill esses 5th to the floor. I couldnt be happier with its first time out on the track, not going to change a thing before next time except race seats\harness

Full SCCH, in fact the ones on Jarods site are the ones on my car, full sphericals, VWMS rear beam, 11.8 AP (off of a formula 3 car, closest part number to origanl VWMS AP calipers), eurospec 11" rear disc, MK4 alum calipers, Enkei PFO1 15 x 8, NT01's, Bilstien Group A coilovers, GC front upper plates, 325 frt spring, 300 rear springs, 280 whp in race tune and 400whp in street tune. Even at low boost and DOT R's still spinning on accel. Haven't put the LSD in yet. we hit 1:09 couple times before and wanted to see if I could break 1:08 w/o the LSD but it's time to make some changes.
We run less boost and timing in race trim for reliability. once I change the LSD and up the spring rate and go to 225 DOTR we'll start upping the boost. Old lap record is 1:05 by TopSpeed's Subie. Kia MotorSports went out there w their Koupe and hit 1:06. I know we can beat it.

it was just 1 30 minute session, it was only $50 so I cant complain. I was actually surprised it made it, despite me self installing a 276 cam without HD springs, and burning oil. I ran the snot out of it too, 7.5k shifts all the time.
The only suspension mods I have are raceland coilovers, and an aggressive alignment. Running 10.1 inch front vented rotors with PBR metallic pads, and stock disks in the rear with the same pads.
No problems during, I did however notice my driver front wheel's camber is a little more than the passenger, so Im taking it back to the alignment shop to get it checked out.

I have a parts list if you want to build your ownSCCH stuff is super nice its just out of my budget.
Starting to prepare my GTI for autox again. I got out of it to do more track days but I just don't seem to be able to get the cash set aside for 200-300 a day. 35-40 is much more doable and now that they re-classed the 16v, I actually have a car that i feel could be competetive again. A 16v rabbit in SM is a joke
If no one has any issues i was going to start posting threads that relate to this, so that people can find relative info on track days and autox type information from here and other forums...
