I just picked up a d5100 and absolutely love it. I was on the fence between the T3i and d5100 for about 2 weeks and it finally came down to getting a better price on the d5100 and it felt better in my hand. It's a great camera, and immediately I've seen the difference in my pictures. The T3i is a great camera as well, but in the end it pretty much comes down to personal preference and how it feels in your hand.

I bought one to replace my old d50... I love everything about it other than having to replace my old sigma 18-50 2.8 (no motor on my old lens). Just eBay'd a non anti shake but I won't have it before my vacay to Chicago.

any differences between the 5100 and the 3100? I really want to sell my d3000 and get one of those (mainly for some video).

no a d5100 wont make your photos any better. what camera do you have now? well whatever camera you have theres at least 356,875 16 year olds using that exact camera and they are all taking way better pictures than you are with it!![]()

Yesterday afternoon I helped a camera salesman talk a young lady out of a 5100 and into a D90 due to the D90's;
Internal focus motor
Detailed menu on top right side of the camera (don't know how I would function w/o one)
Dual aperture/shutter dials
Dedicated shooting related buttons
Amongst many other things I can't remember at this hour
I looked at the 5100 for a few minutes and it was a toy - you have to dig through at least 2-3 menus just to change the ISO..
Absolutely useless for anything other than dawdling around in full auto![]()

I like this logicI still have my D90 as my back up camera and it's an awesome camera (actually snapped some sweet butterfly shots the other day with it). Considering you can get used D90's now in the $7-800 range which is like $200 less than a D5100 it's a no-brainer. The only drawback of a D90 is the video (which I've never really used and wish I could just eliminate completely from the camera) but if that's something you're interested in you're better off getting a Flip camcorder

So if you're considering a D5100 then do yourself a favor and put some serious thought into a nice used (or refurbished) D90.
Refurbished D90 body straight from Nikon w/ warranty $719 http://shop.nikonusa.com/store/nikon...ctID.213427600
and refurbished 50mm f/1.8 straight from Nikon w/ warranty $99 http://shop.nikonusa.com/store/nikon...ctID.213468400
you can possibly find a slightly better deal on a used set up but you wont have a warranty and you may get stuck with a crappy 18-55mm or 18-105mm zoom.

Sorry, you change ISO by pressing the fn-button to the left of the lens mount, and twisting the wheel.
I just shot with a D90 - and it really struck me how much better the D5100/D7000 is in the shadows - so much cleaner it hurts, also, the D5100/D7000 duo handles reds better IMO.
Handlingwise I agree, but a proficient photographer would and should be able to get the best out of both.

I fooled around with the d5100's video and it does not take better video than my camcorder. Irish it did video better, but you hear the motor focusing constantly. It is a bummer.
Uhhh... That was ignorant. Or misinformed (apparently you and the sales guy).

I use a 5100 and really enjoy it. It was my first camera and I've gotten some really good shots with my 50mm 1.4.
Ill be honest though I advanced a little fast for it and now a chance for me to get a 5d mark iii has come up so I'm going to grab that. Im excited for full frame![]()
