Thread: Rise of Flight (WW1 Sim)

    1. 08-06-2011 09:01 PM #1
      Anyone else played this?

I'm not normally much of a sim guy (and luckily this game has numerous "aids" you can turn on)...but holy cripes this game is amazing. WW1 being arguably my favorite aviation period. The game is simply superb. I'm not stoked about their purchase plan...but now that I'm invested in it, its simply marvelous.

      www.riseofflight.com

The weird thing is that the game is free. You can download the "demo" (which is the entire game except career mode) but it only comes with two aircraft. You can then purchase other aircraft, and once you've purchased one, the game unlocks career mode. For all intents and purposes you can play the game for free - you're just limited to one Central powers aircraft, and one Allied power aircraft.

The game is absolutely beautiful and is a blast to play (even though I've mapped it to an Xbox controller for ease of use). I host a server with my buds, and I use the mission editor to make up some pretty slick dogfights. The game visually is so beautiful, you find yourself up in the clouds just admiring the scenery (and then being shot down).

Definitely recommended. I have about $60 in the game now, with access to all of the aircraft except the huge bombers. Am I the only guy who's tried this?

Never heard of it and call me a cynic, but I don't play "free" games that then require me to pay for every little nook and cranny in the game. Oh, you want another plane? That's $5. Oh, you want a different gun? That's $1. Oh, you want a different color? That'll be a $1. Oh, you want a different uniform? That's $1. Etc. I hate all these games that you can play online for "free", but then the only real way to play them is to start paying for add ons. Someone tried to get me into some game called Dark Void or something. Yeah, you could play it for free, but you were never going to get anywhere in the game anytime fast unless you purchased in game credits, upgrades, ships, etc. That's just me though

It's not as bad as many of those games that I've seen. The game/editor are indeed free (minus the campaign), and again its just the planes.

You can buy some field mods for the planes, but I don't have any use for them...and yes they're expensive. They have a discount which increases with the more planes you buy, so if you invest the normal cost of a PC game - you have access to most of them. The nice thing is that all planes are present as AI. You can fight against anything provided in the game.

My buddy invested about $22 and picked up 4-5 planes and he just flies them. You get paint schemes for free, and their community page has downloadable skins/missions/how-tos etc. all for free. My brother just hops in and plays with us with the two free aircraft - since he doesn't play much.

You can actually purchase the game on a disc too, which I think they're phasing it out. The normal version at $35 comes with 8 planes or something. It seems to me to be pretty similar to other big aircraft sims (though I never play them) where you can buy packs of new aircraft etc.

So while its not pay to play - I think the smartest thing to do is just pick out 3-4 aircraft, spend $15-20 and call it a day. I made the mistake of buying access to almost all of the planes, and I don't fly most of them. The game is simply fantastic.

That one doesn't sound too bad then - but I've seen some that people I know have dropped hundreds of dollars on (granted, that was over a period of time).

Yep, I've had some of those games (oh, by this extended magazine for your MP5 for 20,000 points! or $7!).

Now if you do it poorly with this game, and buy each plane separately over a course of time you could definitely spend around $200 or so on all of the stuff. I wouldn't invest much in this beyond the normal $40-50 you would in a normal game - unless you're a super sim nut and have a cockpit built around your PC etc.

There's just something about bursting through the clouds early morning while diving on an enemy bomber, and hoping the tail gunner doesn't shoot you down...

My computer blows so I won't be able to play this, but I'll convince one of my other pilot buddies to download it. Flying underpowered ****boxes around with guns sounds entertaining.

It's pretty interesting flying alongside a bomber or scout plane, with the wing spars shot away, motor smoking, spotter or gunner dead, wings tattered....debating if you should escort them to the ground, or finish them.

If you set up the cameras correctly you can watch all of it in great detail, which is mesmerizing sometimes. I play with my buddies over xbox live chat, so it's fun being out on patrol scouting, trying to find enemy aircraft, then diving into the fray. Hint for taking off, throttle up, and nose down a bit, so you're not dragging your tail skid. This will help minimize the turning on take-off.

neat game. I wish there were more flight sims like this... particularly space combat... I miss that genre.

Just wanted to bump this with some pretty slick videos I found which have been made using the game.

Game is a fun time. They have a half price or better plane deal a few times a year. You can pick them all up for probably $20. If you have never played a flight sim, this one takes some practice to get the shooting right. There is an unlimited demo you can download. Gets you 2 basic planes and some missions. Very good free demo.

i played for a few minutes the other day. I'm not used to the more-realistic flight controls. I couldn't line up a shot very well, although i managed to get a few hits before i crashed

I admit, I turn off most of the super-sim stuff, like controlling radiators, over-revving, pumping fuel lines, etc. I play it as an enjoyable yet realistic looking/feeling game, rather than a sim. I see from the online servers most people do play about 85% realistic, which is impressive.

The planes are each completely modeled with actually functioning motors (meaning the computer is calculating fuel, oil pressure, revs etc.). Even with some "aids" turned on, the game still allows for some pretty cool stuff...(or terrible if you're on the receiving end)

+The SE5a has the "glass" motor as they called it. Over 2200 rpm and you'll likely blow it, so you have to avoid steep dives at throttle.

+If you have wind turned on, the SE5a is correct in that it had so much wing surface that landing can be incredibly tough, as the wind will float the plane like a kite.

+Albatros DIII/DVa etc. have V-wing struts which are very prone to snapping when diving too steeply too fast.

+Planes with rotary engines will twist in the direction which the motor turns, making take offs and landings a bitch. It will though allow you to do some serious turns in that direction while flying.

+I was able to dive and extinguish a fire in my cockpit for the first time last night...landed wounded, but landed.

+The DrI is prone to snapping its outboard upper wings when in a very steep pull-up maneuver. The plane can still fly normally, albeit poorly.

+The Camel is prone to its snap-stall which comes seemingly out of nowhere. In the war it was a notoriously hard plane to fly, and with aids off, its suicidal to me...

PS: If you guys ever feel like flying, hit me up if you see me on Xbox Live (Elb0ws) My buddies and I chat via Xbox while gaming on the PC. I have made a bunch of missions that we fly which are a blast.

Those were really awesome. Need a better computer so I can join you guys and play this. If my skills aren't totally rusty I'd love to go in there and cause some mayhem.
