Had a minor moment at work today; co-worker's Explorer needed a new battery. No biggie, she got one, i assured her I could install it, but I only had a screwdriver set and a Leatherman in my car; no sockets or wrench to get the terminals off. I ran to my inlaws' ~10 minutes away and borrowed some tools, but I'd like to get a couple more tools to have in case of "emergencies" like today's. Socket set, maybe some wrenches, etc.
Right now I have these:
I'd like a socket kit and maybe some adjustable or box wrenches that are in the style of the screwdriver set above; something compact and portable for minor roadside fixes. Anyone got some good solutions for this stuff?
PS, this doesn't need to be a "let me show you my gun/radar detector/cell phone charger/condoms that I keep in my glovebox" thread, just interested in tools.![]()

In your car?I'm talking about crap you carry around with you.
And yeah, guys, the AAA cards are cute, and I've got one too, but I'd like some stuff to fix minor things, such as install the aforementioned battery. I don't need to fix a rod through the block on the side of the road, but it would be advantageous to have a small tool kit for minor repairs, ya know?

I often carry this on long trips in my old cars and carry everything but the floor jack in my daily driver. A 100-piece Craftsman socket set and floor jack. The bag is my "Magic Bag of Tricks". I spent many years being a service electrician. The bag contains all the basic hand tools and a meter. It also contains every single part I ever seem to need. It weighs a lot.

I drive a volkswagen. Therefore I carry a 100piece ratchet set, my jack, 2 stands, battery tender, jumper cables, extension cord, and 4 coil packs with me at all times. For long trips I will add a 4.4l jug of oil, a filter, a bottle of distilled water and a bottle of G12+.

came to post this.
i actually have progressive's roadside coverage though. $7/6 months per covered car. yes Seven dollars for 6 months.
i think my GTI has roadside through the dealer i bought it at as well.
other then that... my cars only have what tools came with them from the factory. so a spare, a jack and a lugwrench... and maybe a sunroof wrench in case you have to manually close it.

I always carry a little bailing wire. Because one time I needed some and had none. And a box of fuses with a fuse tester. And the regular stuff.

Goodyear 146 piece toolkit. Got it on sale and it has enough tools to cover most situations, but I added a longer ratchet extension to it

1 Baseball bat
1 roll of duct tape
if you can't fix it with the above, you shouldn't be driving it.

Going to get my S2000 out of storage this weekend, so I picked a couple tools up at HD tonight.
Bought this, for $15
And then bought this for $5 to store it in.
With the Leatherman and screw driver kit, I should be good.

I keep a couple of those cheapo wal-mart style kits in the van (one with sockets, one with various other tools and screwdrivers). They aren't expensive but they don't get much use and are compact.

ProTip: Until ~April 25th Advance Auto has a sale on their ~45 piece ToolWorks ratchet set. $9.99 They're not the best tools out there, but they're more than adequate enough to keep in a car for emergencies.

Right now I only have tire changing tools. I used to carry around socket sets and an assortment of flexible ratchet wrenches/sockets, but the most often used items were tape, zip ties, pliers, and a knife.

The Equinox I just carry a basic 30 piece socket set in a plastic blown case, tool roll with pliers, screwdrivers, wrenches and a hammer. Just enough to get through basic tasks.
I've got pretty much the same kit in the Camaro.
The F150 however has a pretty good selection of tools as its my parts chaser, tow vehicle and what i'll take when going over the friends and families places to work on stuff. Plus when i go camping there's always something that needs to be assembled or fixed it seems.
Tool bag with:
-SAE and Metric wrenches
-Full set of screwdrivers / Torx drivers
-Full assortment of pliers, slip jaws and adjustable wrenches
-Multi-meter
-Box cutter w/ extra blades
-Center punches and chisels
-Ball peen hammer / 8lb mini sledge
-Wire stripper / crimper tool
-scissors
-prybars (12" and 18")
-Safety glasses and mechanix wear gloves along with latex gloves
-Allen key sets (SAE + Metric)
200+ piece Mastercraft socket set in blown plastic case (+addition missing sizes in the tool bag)
Tool box with:
-Corded Drill
-Drill bit index + hole saw kit
-Electric impact
-Breaker bar
-SAE + Metric Impact sockets (deep + shallow)
-Tube of grease
-White caulking (mostly for the RV)
-Teflon tape
-Duct tape
-Electrical Tape
-Masking tape
-High temp silicone gasket maker
-extension cord (25')
-Electrical terminal and connector kit with assorted fuses
-10,12 and 14Ga wire spools
-Assorted hardware (screws, nuts/bolts, cotter pins, tie wraps, etc..)
-2/3 jaw convertable puller
-File set
-Wood saw (18") and hack saw w/spare blades
-12v Compressor (small one)
-Jumper cables
-Hand towels
3 Ton jack + 1 jackstand ( i keep another spare in the RV)
Tow strap + axle strap
assorted ratcheting straps + Bungy cords.
there's not a whole lot i can't fix with what's here, if i'm camping and something breaks i can handle it, it i'm missing a tool i'll buy it and lot it in with the exsiting kit, that's how its grown over the last few years.
