Honestly, it's a pretty decent tablet. The screen is very good in quality, WebOS is buttery smooth and nifty to use. The only problem I have is that it's basically iPad 1 hardware being sold for iPad 2 price which is a tough sell in the market.
With the prices of Android tablets keep dropping further, unless HP is giving them away for $99. I don't think these will move.
- Lack of Apps, while many people say it doesn't matter. It matters a lot.
- WebOS is nifty but it maybe too fancy for the average user
- Hardware is iPad 1 quality, thicker than most of the competitors today and has some heft.
- HP not known for quality anymore
- People are used to getting a $200 deal for their stuff and never pay retail

For $99 for the 16gb it's a pretty decent deal, I just can't seem to track one down. Guess everyone else thinks it's a good deal too. HP.com sold out, Walmart sold out. BestBuy, HHGregg, and Staples all sending theirs back. It's rumored that BB was sitting on 270K that they are going to send back.

I supposedly just bought one from microcenter. I haven't gotten a confirmation email, but my card has already been charged. All local stores were sold out either before or right after opening. A lot of employees grabbed the limited stock over night. No big deal, I'd do the same![]()

Dual core or not doesn't make a difference, the benchmarks already shows the Touchpad is a slug vs the iPad Gen 1.
Most people just don't understand that properly optimized software for the right hardware can trump poorly written software on greater hardware.
This is the perfect example of why 90% of Android devices are garbage because most vendors can't figure out how to optimize the Android source code with proper device drivers for their devices. And Google has only blessed a few devices optimized code.
The Touchpad is quite buggy right now, I don't think it will ever reach iPad 1 performance, even homebrew people are just hackers and not true developers.
Let's hit this thread a year from now and my predictions is everyone already forgotten about the Touchpad as cheap chinese tablets are out in full force for $99-199 price ranges and all have dual core Tegras.

Not in my experience, but then I updated it as soon as I unpacked it from the box. I remember it going pretty fast before I changed the kernel over to Uberkernel (within hours) and put it at 1.5 GHz. As it is now, I find it just as fast as an iPad 2 (even faster when multitasking).

just picked up a 32GB. i am actually pretty excited to get it. i heard it is a pretty slick (although slow) tablet.
but to be honest, the only reason i got it is because they are working on porting android over to it. this is probably the first product i bought because of what it COULD be and not because of what it is.
but under $200 for a 9.7" duel core 32GB tablet with beats audio is pretty good IMO. if it gets android on it (even if it is 2.3 and not 3.x) it is going to be awesome.
going to be using it for work related purposes mostly. and in flight entertainment as i do a good bit of traveling.....BEATS AUDIO BABY

The snapdragon SOC in the touchpad is not iPad1 hardware, but as vision33r stated, optimized software goes a loooong way.. which the touchpad obviously doesn't have.

Are you trying to go back to stock? You can simply download the 3.0.2 version of WebOS doctor on your PC and then hook it up to your Touchpad. Once recovered, the apps restore themselves and the data is still there (I wiped it once after putting photos and movies in there just to see, but you could just move all the stuff onto your PC just to be sure).
Did you try Warthog kernel instead to see if it works better?

I haven't gone looking for it myself, but you could try webOS quick install:

(I found mplayer in that board topic)

So, comparing an overlocked Touchpad to everything else is a fair comparison? That's about the worst type of troll out there.
You got zero apps, the iPad 2 doesn't even need to be overclock to enjoy thousands of apps. You just got yourself an overclocked web pad and picture frame. What else can your Touchpad do?
I love seeing kids like you got tons of time to waste on things like this when a $200 tablet can get more productivity and entertainment. I got better things to do like getting my Crucial M4 512GB SSD ready for my new monster rig.

If I was unclear before, what I meant was that I did not find it that slow after the update was applied, but I do not have extensive data because I only used it that way for a short time before I overclocked it. Of course it is very fast now, but that's not what I was talking about when I said that it didn't seem very slow comparatively with just 3.0.2.

whatbluevw,
have you noticed any problems with warthog kernel? I only am curious about this kernel, because I've heard it will help with streaming video websites like hbogo and amazon streaming.
I'm about to install it. EEEE

A fast web pad is worth $99. Plus there are some decent apps.. games, music, drawing, news, video, comics, file sync, cooking.

i just got one today. A little slow loading stuff and nit all that many apps for it. But for $100 it is awesome. It will keep me entertained until android gets loaded on it.
makes a nice couch laptop.

As far as GPU's go
PowerVR SGX543MP (Ipad2) > Adreno 220 (Touchpad) > Tegra2

posting this from my $99 touchpad. At worst its a cheaper kindle with a decent web browser.. And and digital picture frame... At best someone picks up webOS or figures out the whole android thing..and we (the $99 buyers) got a steal...

When I met with the HP rep a few months back at work, they wanted to give me a few to let us try it.
I gave them 3 requirements.
- RSA token app
- Citrix Client
- GotoMeeting or Webex App.
Unfortunately, they couldn't meet those requirements. The Touchpad should've been out last year or atleast sport a thinner case. I really think the downfall is the lack of apps. Instead of spending like a couple of mil on celebrity endorsement, they should just contract out developers to code useful apps for the Touchpad.
Just one suite of productivity apps, a dozen or so high quality games, and port some lifestyle apps and it will easily win consumers.
If you scour the Touchpad forums, people all love the WebOS but outside of web surfing and the few free games HP game for free, there's nothing else left to do. Almost everyone at my job converted to iPad even some diehard Android fans converted due to the lack of native apps for Honeycomb.

The real issue is that HP decided to pull the plug on their mobility division when it was still in its infancy: I still am of the opinion that it's outright senseless of them to have put a lot of time, effort and money inr getting a new startup going... only to pull the plug months later because it wasn't an instant success of epic proportions. Imagine if Nokia, in their present struggles, had the same kind of drive and determination. Heh...
HP might want to change their logo to a white flag, especially with the rumors of a pullout of the PC market as well.

Even if the Tegra 2 is a faster CPU, because the Xoom has a 1280x800 resolution and the iPad 2 only has 1024x768. The iPad 2 will be easily faster because it has to do less work on a smaller resolution screen.
Taking the same game like Dungeon Defenders which is out on iOS and Android optimized for Tegra, the game performs slower and choppier on the Tegra 2.
Of course this is just gaming performance.

EDIT: Found one! I managed to snag one form Staples online via a hack found on SlickDeals. Should be arriving today.
-----------------------------------
Slightly OT - If anyone had an extra (or is bored after a week's use) that they'd be willing to part with for a decent price, let me know. I've missed out on finding one thus far and my HP SMB order got cancelled today... I think that was my last hope.
Thanks,
-Brett.

A friend of mine just offered to sell me his 32 GB Touchpad for $150. I'm really thinking about pulling the trigger on this.
