When he asks why you missed the first class say, "Wait we had a class already?! , aww man I'm really sorry. I was away last weekend at a charity event/ car show. They had some really nice old VW's and some new ones there too."
Then you say "hey professor, you ever owned a VW?"
At that point he will go off about how his first car was a VW or he had one once.
See then your free and clear

I always cancel classes the Monday after H2Oi for the commute trip home, and allow students the time to work on their assignments. Since my family travels together, I always use "family engagements" officially...

I teach college English throughout the Philadelphia area - I'm an adjunct for the time being (2 classes and a dissertation left until I have the mandatory "Doctor" letters to qualify for a full-time gig.

I provided the reminder on Friday that there were no classes on Monday and was met with a round of applause!
