The fiance was filling up her Jetta and the flap will now no longer latch shut. The car is unlocked (so its not that central locking latch) but it just wont catch. The flap will go flush with the body but not latch. Of course, Ive never paid attention to it and since I dont have a MKV myself anymore, I have nothing to compare it to to see if something is bent. Can anyone post up a photo of their or tell me whats going on so I can fix it if theyve had the same problem.

The actuator / latch is accessed from inside the trunk for service.
Here are pics of the outside of a Mk5 GTi.

and the piece on the inside of the door that engages the latch

How bent is that metal piece supposed to be? The Jetta release looks different than the GTI one it seems.

The metal piece is the spring that pops the door out when you release it.
It has a curve on the end, but other than that it is not bent at all.
Here is another shot from a lower angle that shows the spring a little better.

Probably is different, the plastic shell in the car and the fuel door are molded to the body contours.
Thought maybe the two cars shared the actuator / pin mechanism.
The Jetta may very well be the same mounted at a different angle.
The GTi / Rabbit actuator is mounted up in the c-pillar,
the Jetta actuator is probably rotated 90° to fit in the side of the trunk.
Compare the latch on the fuel door. If it is the same shape but at a different angle,
then the latch may share some parts.

Okay, Im guessing that by looking at your photos that hers is stuck in the release position and therefore not latching. Ill have to see whats going on. Thanks.
