These runs just may have jumped the shark with this one.

Maybe I need to participate in one these trendy new action adventure obstacle course runs to understand it. Currently think they're pretty lame.

well, there really isn't anything lame about them except that they are everywhere now. I mean, I guess I can understand feeling too cool for them, but it's just like signing up for a 5k or 10k and having obstacles in front of you.

I don't think I could ever do one of these. Mainly because there's one HUGE 10K here, 10,000+ people. Different start / finish locations, so it can be a hassle getting there. Gotta park downtown, towards the finish, then bus you out to the Start of the race. Gotta show up real early to get to the start on time, stand around, etc.

EVERY YEAR, a few weeks before the race, I start dreaming that I was running late. I miss the last bus, somehow get a ride to the start, and everyone's gone. I get to the start, and people start yelling at me to go, that everyone's already gone, and they wave me through. As I'm running, I'm seeing the race directors all over, they're having me run through buildings, up and down stairs, through alleys, etc., trying to catch up with the other runners.

Ugh. This would just be like that nightmare coming true!

This is probably one of the best posts I have read in some time.

^Agreed. That was much deeper than a poorly planned run.

They do them in waves so not everyone has to make the same start time...

Too expensive for the hassle, watched videos of it...if you're any type of serious about it then it'll be tough getting around non serious types.

For me they are just another feel good parade. America sees distance running as the pinnacle of fitness. It's not. The Tough Mudder claims its the hardest event on the planet, yet they are extremely loose about timing, and there is no accountability regarding actually doing the obstacles.

Kind of like how lifters consider lifting as the pinnacle of fitness, yet most are fat and are anything but 'fit'. Strength <> fit. The key is to be well rounded, getting both strength and aerobic activity.

I don't think anyone thinks lifting is the pinnacle of fitness. And if you think most people who lift are fat, you're ignorant as hell.

Why do these events (mudrunner, warrior dash, etc) need to be so damn expensive?

I may as well start an event. Lets all run up the mountains near my house, eat a granola bar then run back down. The only trick is to not get caught by the rattlesnakes or black widows. We have some shear drop offs too, about 60-100 feet. Its free, and you have a scare factor.
