test drove the new gli this week DSG, and noticed there is not way to turn off esp.
this was kind of a deal breaker for me, i usually drive with the esp on , but there are
times i like to shut it off. im not sure how this will affect performance especially in a stage 2
      car.
      Why would VW do that
other than that i liked the car.

I can't turn off ESP on my 09 GLI neither, all it does is turn off traction control. You're saying that on the Mk6 GLI you can't even disable traction control?

They should have kept it like my 06 GTI, where you could disable ESP completely.

in the 2012 gli ,you cannot turn anything off. there is no esp button.
all vw have the esp to disable traction.
in the GLI esp is on all the time.

Dealerships don't use "Vagcom", and even if they did you can not use it to disable ESP. Also, I HIGHLY doubt anyone working at a VW dealership would be so stupid to turn off any of the car's safety features.

If you don't like the ESP go to AWE's website, spend the money to get all the buttons and wiring and do the DIY. I've had my GLI for 3 months and I've had my ESP button installed for a month of that.

Let's just pass the arguing part of this and get back to enjoying the car.

      This

and realistically, these aren't race cars, the average person needs the traction control/ESP. even in BMW's ///M cars there is no way to turn it completely off, at XXmph, it turns back on.
to AWE though I've been considering the new GLI since mine is getting dated

Well for starters... in this case my Tech has Vagcom on hand, (as do myself). And also traction control was indeed permenatly turned off. ESP was not and would re-enable every starup. The right people at dealerships are capable of anyhthing. just saying.

If you don't want to hack up your car and buy hardware, we can turn off and on ESP with our calibrations. More info on this later.

Is it something that I could wait to do instead of how flash for 900 or would it just work with it? If you can't say I get it it but I'd rather not drop a 1000 and then drop more again

I'm not good with wiring, so I watched my buddy install it. Was very easy. Parts were cheap. Tap the button and ESP goes off. Tap again and its on.

I understand that the illumination on the switch stays at 100% no matter how the panel lights are dimmed. Is it distracting or noticeable at night? Thanks.

Hello, i just turned off traction through Vag-Com, easy and it takes 2 minutes, you have to go to steering Assist, click adaptation, and select code 09, then just change the value 0 to 1 and your esp is OFF:-) easy and free if you can borrow the cable.

I installed the USP kit without the dimmer on my GLI and no, I do not find the lighting distracting, but to each his own. USP makes a kit that you can tie into a power source that is on the dimmer switch, though I have no personal experience with it. Love the ability to turn traction on and off as this is how the car should have been made.
