Given that I pretty much only play driving games and shooters, I was stupefied with this series:

Mass Effect 2: I enjoyed the first one a lot, but even 2 months after beating it, pretty much everything about the 2nd one still resonates. It's at the top of my all time game list.

Red Dead Redemption is still the best game I have ever played. The story and the game play gave you such an imbedded feeling in the game. It is the only game i have played that I felt so attached to the charecters.

It was the first game I played where I felt like you really could go 'anywhere' in it and didn't have to stick to a left to right scrolling script.
This. First time I played it on a kiosk in a store I was blown away. Bought the system shortly after that. There was nothing like it at the time.

Other notables .... the first 2K Football release with the Dreamcast launch. Madden what?

Devil May Cry blew me away at the time.

Shadow of the Colossus shown above was impressive in scale.

Battletoads for the ridiculous, controller breaking difficulty.
Where are we going and why am I in this handbasket?

Definitely Skate. They shouldnt have made sequels because they sucked. The original Skate is where it was at. The flick it controls were so intuitive.

Herzog Zwei... many didn't quite get this game, because it seemed(to them) like a real quirky shooter, but instead it was one of the first real time strategy games out there.

Along the skateboarding/extreme sports games you had Aggressive Inline, which had all the controllability of your Tony Hawk games, but introduced the open world style play to the genre, basically you played in a free skate style mode doing tricks all over place, doing specific level goals on your own timetable (before this game the THPS series had time limits for each level)

THPS quickly added this style of play while calling their original form of play.

      Pepsi Man!

It was the sort of game that made me go "Holy crap this is ****** up, but it's awesome and I love it!"

I've always loved quirky games that most people think are terrible.

      Great thread question.

For me Tomb Raider 1 and 2
And not an actual game (actually the game too), but a trailer for Metal Gear Solid (ps1) that I got in the mail. It was in Japanese which made it more awesome for me.
Theres more but I'll leave it at that.

I'd imagine most people thought that was terrible for fairly obvious reasons
