I loved Herzog Zwei. Waaaaay ahead of it's time there.

Herzog Zwei... many didn't quite get this game, because it seemed(to them) like a real quirky shooter, but instead it was one of the first real time strategy games out there.
Along the skateboarding/extreme sports games you had Aggressive Inline, which had all the controllability of your Tony Hawk games, but introduced the open world style play to the genre, basically you played in a free skate style mode doing tricks all over place, doing specific level goals on your own timetable (before this game the THPS series had time limits for each level)
THPS quickly added this style of play while calling their original form of play.

Pepsi Man!
It was the sort of game that made me go "Holy crap this is ****** up, but it's awesome and I love it!"
I've always loved quirky games that most people think are terrible.

Great thread question.
For me Tomb Raider 1 and 2
And not an actual game (actually the game too), but a trailer for Metal Gear Solid (ps1) that I got in the mail. It was in Japanese which made it more awesome for me.
Theres more but I'll leave it at that.

Recent - dirt3. It's not stellar but just poo grinning fun.
Past - twisted metal. So much fun playing split screen against friends.

Final Fantasy 7
3 discs long. I had never seen a game where one of the MAIN characters you had been playing for so long actually dies in the storyline and doesn't come back later.![]()

So many awesome games I forgot about, bringing back memories.
Borrowed FF7 from a friend and only beat one disk of it. Wonder if he still has it...Originally Posted by redman43

FF8 had a happy ending though, I think

I played FF7 so friggin' much. I remember grinding for days and days (maybe weeks) so I could actually beat the snake up near the beginning rather than running past it like you could.
FF8 I grinded without realizing the enemies scaled with you. Made for very difficult boss fights even on disc 1.![]()

Gears of War 3 - Such a massive improvement in graphics and gameplay over the previous 2 while keeping the story in line
Red Dead Redemption was awesome!

I love that game. I pulled out my genesis and played that with my daughter and she loved it. What other old game do you think a young HD generation gamer would enjoy? Just shows how ahead of its time it really was.
But for me, the first game that really grabbed me and pulled me into hours of gaming was:

Since we're only naming one game, I'm going to go with Fallout 2.
Katamari and Rise of the Triad both came close, but Fallout 2 will forever be my holy crap this is an awesome game
