Anyone know if roof rack options are avaiable from the dealer? Pre installed rails to add a roof mounted bike rack specifically...?
This is what the owner's manual says about roof racks (in the "Transporting" chapter, page 151 in my owner's manual):
It goes on to give 2 similar warnings to try to convince us that they are really serious about not putting a roof rack on the Passat. It definitely succeeded in making me nervous. Anyone have any thoughts about this? Is it just CYA language because they didn't test the car with any roof racks? Or is there something to this?Roof rack
For technical reasons, the vehicle body is not designed to carry a roof rack. Never mount a roof rack on your vehicle. Mounting a roof rack will do considerable damage to the vehicle.

OK folks you can stop lurking around your local VW parts department. VW has officially said that they will not offer an accessory roof rack option for the 2012 Passat. The owners manual goes as far as discouraging the practice and advices not to install and after market roof rack on the car. If you look in your owners manual on page 151 it states the following:
For technical reasons, the vehicle body is NOT designed to carry a roof rack. Never mount a roof rack on your vehicle. Mounting a roof rack will do considerable damage to the vehicle.
That is not to say that the roof of the Passat is weak. Remember that the Passat won a top safety pick award that takes roof strength into consideration. As a matter of fact the Passat is the only car in its segment that has a laser welded roof. In the mean time please send all letters of hate and discontent to firstname.lastname@example.org
