1974 they stopped making them , resumed in 1993 but then the regs in 1998 requiring airbags up front, door beams etc, proved too costly for the small numbers being sold here. I will tell you, theres no fewer than 6 defender 110 diesels on my block alone. They're a ten pence a dozen.

Mind if I ask where that is? I know there's a guy in Georgia that imports a bunch of European offroaders, just wondering if its the same or another person.

Rovers Out East in NC. Buyer beware. Most of them are complete ****boxes. Sorry but there is no other way to describe it. There is a fairly brisk business of gathering the rotten ones up in the UK, dripping (literally) new paint on them and sending them to the shipping dock for the States. The guy who sells these is a doctor and is nice enough but, from personal experience having almost bought from him, theyre terribly overpriced and usually nightmares. There are more than a few stories of fires, break downs, etc... of vehicles right after they leave his "lot." I say "lot" because he sells them through a 3rd party used car dealer. Dont bother.

Buddy of mine has a '97 D90. Probably one of the best that are out there with everything he has done to it. He has upgraded EVERYTHING on that truck. But it still finds new and inventive ways to piss him off.

I was going to post in that thread and then it got locked. Aaron is a nice enough guy but his trucks are complete crap. I went down there for a D90 he had. A small lift, looked good in photos and he said the frame was in great shape and the 300tdi was running great. Truck showed up and I crawled underneath. Frame looked to have been pieced together from three other frames, all with pterodactyl poop looking welds and RTV everywhere. Next, brake lines were rotten through so I pointed it out and he was "shocked" and took it back to be fixed by his "guy." About half an hour later, the 90 shows back up again but this time it was smoking pretty badly (a diesel really shouldnt smoke unless its under load) and there were leaks at the injectors. I pointed this out and again, he was "shocked." I then began to look at the paint. If youve ever put too much paint on a wall and watched it drip down, that was the chosen method for painting this truck. Pulled the seats and noticed that the seat box was about 3 different colors. Next, I started poking around for proof that it was truly a 1985. The place that imported it had removed all VIN plates making it impossible. at that point, I was completely turned off and drove the multiple hours back home. There isnt one truck that I can think of that doesnt have issues that he has sold. I took the same amount of money and bought my BJ60 and have been completely happy.

The question about people not being surprised is that the Defenders that are coming out of England are complete pieces of crap. They are ones that are cobbled together to drive the RoRo port and sold to Americans because there is a demand for them. There are very few honest importers and even fewer ones who are realistic in pricing.
You think you hate it now. Wait til you drive it.
