realistically I think its too late. Programable chips are the future, but for obd1 cars. I think the market is flooded with "other" chips already.
in theory you can program your own obd1 chips
emulator, burner thats the basics.
Just my 2 cents.

Miller performance has cracked the obd1 motronic and made it possible to Write and Remap obd1 chips. Now they are strictly bmw but have joined with 034 in development for audi. Now thats all fine and dandy but I want for obd1 abas.. 16vs and vr6 cars(digifant ?). 034 is getting close to releasing the "WAR" chip for audi. I called them today and they asked me to gauge interest from my fellow enthusiasts to develop these chips for obd1 VW engines. Now i am sure this is no HONDATA as the early motronic isn't as advanced as the honda computers.. but it would be a great tool to get your car tuned as close to perfect as possible without the use of standalone. The e30 guys use it to ad boost on m20s so i do not think it would be an issue for adding boost to a vw.
FYI.. i stand to make any money by posting this thread.. just throwing it out there..
More info on the war chip..

so you can pretty much "tune" a obd1 motronic car without going standalone?
if that is pretty much the jist of what your talking about i am in aslong as it is
decent price

$400 for a interface is ridiculous.
You can already achieve this with free software, and $100 in hard parts.

Only if it's ok with you.
Really need a thread on this separate though, as my knowledge is pretty basic when it comes to Hex. Enough to mess with my own stuff, but not enough to confidently do others without a template.
If someone were to develop a good templete, it would be great. OBD2 is a much bigger hurdle though.
http://www.moates.net/c2-sst-27sf512....html?cPath=26 Replacement chips. UV erase-able chips are also available.

http://motronic.ws/ GREAT resource for starting out.
Some OBD1 Vr6 and ABA bin files are available, but you will have to search for them. They aren't that hard to find. Alternativly, you can solder yours, and read it.

What new/other info are you looking for? There isn't anything else that is needed.
This is the same process many other car makes use. I have made probably 40+ cals using only a burner, on 3 different makes. Prob 30 of those I had better tuning software for, but really the only difference is that the better software is vehicle specific, therefor there are built in shortcuts. (rough scaling of injectors, a/f guide lines based on PE, scaling for different fuels, ect.) But even with that, it's always just a calculated guess, and you can accomplish the exact same with a hex editor, or Tunerpro.
There really isn't THAT much more for Honda's. All the good Honda software is $$$, you can build a nice MS setup for what most Hondata and such runs. Everyone acts like VW's are such a small market, with nothing available, which is a joke. It's out there, people just would rather make excuses to why they can't, instead of just learning for themselves and doing.

its just like you said people havent really look and research or it. I just started looking into it now and since I work for a honda tuning shop. So the obvious choice for me is to look into what out there for vw's. I was looking into more for OBD2. I was thinking of going haltech since a fellow dubber suggest to use it since the stuff out there is very limited. He has 700hp vr tuned. Im currently building an aba16v stroker. So im looking into my options and wanted to do it right the first time around. I hope this encourages more people to do more tuning.

Heres some lil more info on Montronic 5.9
Sourced from:
http://www.wetdub.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=6087
Greetings guys. If Keith@APR would have his way, I will likely be banned soon for pointing out that he’s blatantly lying to people to discourage you from making progress on your own for burning proms without paying his company. I’m typing this quickly so bare with some minor missing thing here or there.
Collective knowledge dump:
The Motronic 5.9.1 prom is a 44 pin PLCC prom.
Most prom burners are 40 pin DIM’s.
Adapters can be built or purchased to go from 40 Pin DIM’s to the 44 Pin PLCC.
WinOLS can read and identify the Bosch Maps. You must manually setup WinOLS to do this, otherwise it won’t locate them. Read the WinOLS instruction manual for info on how to do that.
TunerCat has a “Compare function.” If you want to quickly ID Fuel, Ignition maps, speed limiter, rev limiter, etc download the image from your stock prom. Download an image from an aftermarket prom, like a C2 or TT prom. Use TunerCat’s compare function to compare the images. That will give you all the required map addresses you need to tune fuel and ignition for your needs.
You must register WinOLS to burn a modified file. Do so.
Motronic 5.9.2 ECM’s can be socketed for burnable proms.
Later Motronic Units can likely be socketed as well to use the same or similar proms.
TT can socket your prom.
Test all prom’s on a dyno before you get on the road. You must be in a controlled location to monitor Fuel/Spark, Knock counts, egt etc.
If you run into checksum problems in 5.9.2 or later prom’s, you must adjust the checksum data to match the new tune data.
Don’t let people like Keith@APR lie and discourage you! Reading, writing, and tuning prom’s is not hard. The entire prom will have between 100-300 maps. You will need less than half of those for almost all of your needs. It’s very easy to do. The software is often FREE. The prom reader/writer is very inexpensive and can often be handmade. Your total upfront investment will be about the cost of $200.
DO NOT CONTINUE TO BUY INTO THE IDEA THAT TUNING A MOTRONIC SYSTEM IS VOODOO FOR ONLY THE FEW CHOOSEN ONES! All of you can do it! It’s very simple once you learn a few of the little steps in between. The biggest secret has been the software. All you need is a registered version of WinOLS, and TunerCat. That’s it. Do you fellow VW owners a favor and post this on other boards. If you find a new map address, post that as well. Share the information freely, don’t be lied to any longer. You are not stupid. Each of you are intelligent enough to do this. Band together and share information – just what this board was meant for. Don’t let certain sponsors bully you around with lies anymore.
Live in peace,
Brian

I have worked on this a lot but kinda let it go. I have an ABA tunerpro xdf WIP, and have done some custom coding. It's remarkably complex and simple at the same time...but I had to let go of it due to obsessive personality disorder, lol.

Good info above. I use this: http://www.batronix.com/shop/program...ogrammers.html
I have the Batego I and love it. I originally bought it for some work projects but also for home. I just needed to get the 44-pin adapter. I started playing with some GIAC chips from my old 1.8T. Maybe I should pull this back out of the closet..

I've been playing with my OBD1 ABA ECU (which is Motronic 2.9 btw) for a while now, and fleshing out the TunerPro XDF. I've finally figured out how the ECU maps out it's fuel calculation, and if I'm right...it'll be CAKE to self-tune for boost.
Seriously, this is gonna happen. I've been working on this XDF for a long time now, and while there are 186 different maps in the ECU...only a fraction of them need to be touched for an aftermarket tune. I've compared the data from a few aftermarket chips, and you'd be surprised to see how few code mods you get in an NA chip. When it does happen, the only thing people will need is an emulator from Moates.net (plug and play to the socket in the ecu), and Tunerpro (freeware). This amounts to an investment of $179 USD.
All the info is up on Ecuconnections.com, in this thread: http://www.ecuconnections.com/forum/...php?f=25&t=813
I assume NO responsibility for any damage you may cause to your own engines, for playing around with the maps if you don't understand what you're doing. Just because you can see the maps, doesn't mean you should touch them. Stuff like the rev limiter, top speed limiter, etc etc, are 100% correct, but the rest of the XDF is a WORK IN PROGRESS. I am not a code disassembler, just a guy who likes puzzles, but I don't have all the pieces yet. The XDF on the second page of that thread is where I stand currently in the project...and if you don't know what you're doing, PLEASE leave it alone. Once I'm a bit more certain in what I've created, I'll make up a "DIY", and we can get this self-tuning stuff up and running...like the Honda crowd did 10 years ago
.

That's the best part, when I'm done...the only thing people will need to pay for is the emulator. The software is all free, and the plugin I provide will be too
.
#25
Definitely. A tutorial will be provided too. I've had to learn a lot of odd stuff to get this going, but I want it to be as simple as tuning any other form of aftermarket management...without having to learn base/16 hex code.
I wrote something similar for digi-1, the link is in my sig. The same emulator can be used for both EFI systems.
#26
Making good progress, fixed an error I had made, now the fueling model is way more clear. The fuel tuning part is pretty much done: idle fuel, low part throttle, high part throttle, and WOT are mapped out. I'm playing around with the ignition now, just want to make sure I've got it right. The part throttle ignition is easy, I'm now trying to figure out how it does the WOT part. Gotta get it right, so that boost tuning can be done properly...and not rely on the knock sensor.
#27
Found a bunch of other things, like the idle speed target tables. I hate that 840rpm idle on my daily 94 jetta, so this is a good one. I did some housecleaning on the XDF as well, and some more tracing. It's coming along nicely, and is definitely useable as-is if someone wants to try it out. There's still no tutorial though, mainly because I don't have a wideband on my jetta, so I can't really say what the best way to tune is
.
#29
If anyone is still interested, it's all done and ready to go.

I wished i had obd1 to play around.

I'm currently tuning my ABA-swapped Mk1 for boost, it runs like stock on 358cc injectors right now. I've submitted the XDF to Tunerpro.net for hosting as well.

Done
Took the car on a 100km drive (60 miles or so), with great success. Cruises at 14.5:1, boosts at 10:1 (currently not perfectly tuned), and idles at 14.5:1. Perfect driveability too.
I used the above files to tune my own car, they're all that's needed (for the most part). Enjoy!![]()
