Yeah, the S53 is the part number... unless you want the raised bars for more clearance, then you need the S16 bar and the K328 mount.

In case anyone is looking, I have a pair of S53 Whispbars for sale pretty cheaply.

      http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthrea...tta-Sportwagen

My first set developed splits in the gaskets. Not a deal breaker, but more annoying than I could deal with. So I got a second set. Take my first pair off my hands.

Wish you'd posted this a coupla weeks ago! I looked at your pictures in the other thread - how did the gasket split? Overtightened? Was it on a JSW rail??

I think it was an early production version of the rack after Yakima took over from Prorack. Wasn't overtightened, my current rack has been on the car for 2 months and no splits. Just looks like a harder version of the same rubber. Doesn't affect performance of the rack. Yes, this was on a JSW rail.

Here is a picture of it on the car:

      And here it is today:

I just put on a set of Thule Aero Blade bars with 450R feet. And they are as quite as no rack. Put a 5mm hex in your cordless drill and you can have the rack off in under a minute.

I was borrowing the same feet with the old rectangular bars for a few weeks and they were extremely noisy. I have had rectangular bars on 4 other cars with no problem but something about the roof air flow on the JSW made them whistle very loud about 60mph.

Great looking rack compared to the old black rect bars. I'll try to take a picture tomorrow.

I thought the whisper bar looked sweet untill i saw this video.

Thule has never done me wrong and apparently they stay on your roof.

      Pics.

Installed the S53 Whispbar's this morning. No issues with the clearance with the sunroof open.

Are the Whispbar's compatible with the Peloton fork mounted bike rack from Thule? That is the only thing holding me back from switching to whispbar's, no other fork mounted rack is quite as good as theirs.

you probably have to use the Thule Xdapt9 kit.

I can't say for sure but I doubt it. You should take a look at the Yakima Frontloaders - they are pure awesomeness although they are ~ $150 each.

If you already have accessories for the OEM bars you should just go with those... plus they are a bit less expensive than the Whispbars.

I bought OEM ones, because I could drive the car out the door with them and I was already blowing so much money... I don't have a sunroof, but haven't noticed the noise. They cost me a few MPG on the gas JSW, though. I tend to take them off when I don't need them. That being said, based on the pictures here the Whispbars look far better.

I have some Thule kayak carriers, and they barely fit around the OEMs, to the tune where I probably should get longer bolts for them. Otherwise, though, no complaints. And, as the salesguy pointed out, the OEMs come with a "torque wrench" ;-)

I just ordered Whispbar S53 from ORS Rack. On sale for $314 and used the code extra10 to get the price to $282.69. Those are some nice rails for $282!

Thanks to the pics and info provided by ToeBall () I just purchased the S53 Whispbars and 2 Yakima Highrollers with locks from ORS Racks. Will post some pics as soon as they arrive.

I had the thule "ols school" square bars. So all my accessories (bike, Kayak, box) have mounts for the square bar. Will they work on the new style thule rack or the Whisbars

I don't have any pics. I can try and take some this weekend but I pretty much just followed what ToeBall did on his car. For the front I just bought shorter carriage bolts that went right into channel on the whispbars and for the back I bought some extra carriage bolts and wingnuts and drilled a hole though the highroller tray and slid the bolt into the channel and through the drilled hole. It all fits really good and nothing hangs below the whispbars. It was very easy and looks really nice. Thanks to ToeBall

Thanks for the info. I understand the front no problem...the back is where i am a bit lost. So did you drill all the way through the HighRoller and the nut is in the channel where the tire sits???

Yes. I drilled all the way through the highroller and put the bolt in the whispbar t-channel like it is in the front. The wingnut is on top of the highroller in the tire channel.

What a pain. The Yakima FrontLoaders just go right on, no mods needed for the Whispbars. The guy where I got my racks said he liked them better than the Highrollers so I went with his suggestion, glad I did. They also lock directly to the bars with no cables then there are fixed cables to lock the bikes to the racks.

And the Frontloader clamps clear the sunroof with Whispbar S53's?

    33. 03-14-2012 06:17 PM #103
@myfriendmises I just did the exact same thing you did, S-53's and High Rollers (well, only one so far). I have my front bar mounted quite a bit further forward to clear the sunroof, but it works well. I love the low profile of the bars and it's nice having the carriers that much closer to the ground.

Oh, That I do not know since I do not have a sunroof. If you don't open the roof or position the racks in such a way I don't see why not.

Actually, I didn't drill all the way through, I undid the end cap and wheel tray so the nut goes in underneath. Didn't think of going all the way through.
