What a pain. The Yakima FrontLoaders just go right on, no mods needed for the Whispbars. The guy where I got my racks said he liked them better than the Highrollers so I went with his suggestion, glad I did. They also lock directly to the bars with no cables then there are fixed cables to lock the bikes to the racks.

And the Frontloader clamps clear the sunroof with Whispbar S53's?

@myfriendmises I just did the exact same thing you did, S-53's and High Rollers (well, only one so far). I have my front bar mounted quite a bit further forward to clear the sunroof, but it works well. I love the low profile of the bars and it's nice having the carriers that much closer to the ground.

Oh, That I do not know since I do not have a sunroof. If you don't open the roof or position the racks in such a way I don't see why not.

It all fits really good and nothing hangs below the whispbars. It was very easy and looks really nice. Thanks to ToeBall
Actually, I didn't drill all the way through, I undid the end cap and wheel tray so the nut goes in underneath. Didn't think of going all the way through.

I have an old-style Thule rack that I picked up off fleabay. Turns out I didn't pay too close attention and wound up with a rack that was too wide for the car. Rack is designed for larger wagons like the Volvos.

So my next investment was a metal cutting blade for the table saw... it works now. Bars are still wider than Thule specs for our cars.

      Price was right.

Have to say, it is handy having oversized bars on the car. You can get heavy stuff onto the car easier.

I never leave the bars on the car when not in use because I am paranoid about fuel economy. They mount/unmount in about 10-15 min.

Whipsbars are the width of the distance between the roof rails. The rear bar is a little shorter bEcause the roof tapers. On a side note, does anyone know if I can get a bike rack and a basket on the Whipsbars?

I had my best fuel economy with only one vessel on top this morning at 41.5mpg over 150miles with an avg. speed of 60. I have the OEM Crossbars. The Thule J bars original hardware was not long enough to mount to the bars so a quick trip to Fastenal for some longer M6 bolts did the trick .

put the bike rack on the basket.

Have people been following the suggested crossbar width as stated in the manual?

What about roof boxes, what reduction in mpg or l/km have you been noticing .
      Thanks

i can only imagine that the noise that a box makes....
last year, i ran with my snowboards inside my wagon on all my excursions.
this year i actually put my ski racks on the car.
it is quite a noticable noise difference with the ski attachments on. even with a fairing installed.
far greater than just running w/ racks and bike mounts.

i would like to run w/out racks when i dont need them for mileage/sound benefit but its just not realistic to pull the racks on/off each week

Can you post some pics or measurement of where you mounted your front crossbar? I just mounted the S53's on my JSW and the sunroof is rubbing when I open it. The glass actually rubs in the center on the bar and barely rubs the mounts on both sides.

Having my JSW only a month now, I went with the $54 shipped ebay ones in the interim until I figure out what to do. Search for aluminum cross rails and you will find them. For the price they are quite nice but when bare they do whistle.

The Whispbars in the low profile configuration look the best but really limit carrying capacity being so narrow between the rails. I need to have a Thule Atlantis 1800 box plus two bike mounts - one each side. I got rid of my 15 year old Thule mounts an I'm waiting for the new Kuat Rufee fork mounts to be released this Spring.

The box is raised/lowered in my garage with an electric hoist system I rigged up. This reduces top weight and drag when not needed, but since it carried my work supplies it is used often. If I really wanted I could also undo the rack and hoist the entire system up. In addition, having 48" straight rails means it is very easy to bring home 4x8' sheets of whatever from Lowes.

yes, part of the reason i needed the cross bars for situations like this and we do have a carrier if we need for another roadtrip.

Can anybody who has got the s54's to successfully work with the sunroof please show me pics or measurements of the front bar placement. My sunroof rubs as it opens on the rack. Im afraid it will damage the sunroof if i leave it. I tried moving it forward and back. I can't seems to find a spot where it will clear. I need to decide if I'm going to keep them. I have a 2013 JSW.
      Thanks

Test fit of Aerobars with roofbox. All fits well. The Aerobars are quiet enough for daily use. Still playing with the front bar to reduce the whistle factor....

Can someone show me their 4 bikes on the roof setup. I just got 2 Yakima frontloaders and was going to pair those with my old Thule peloton fork mounts on the outsides to stagger the handlebar height and reduce width.
But I'd like to see some pics of 4 bikes on top.

I have a set of Whispbar S53 if anyone is interested. Bars are in excellent shape. Only used a few times.
