I just installed a new clutch kit and Eurospec light weight flywheel into my 88 Cabriolet. When I press down on the pedal there is zero resistance, and the clutch pedal does return on it own. I can't see that I have installed anything wrong, but I could have being my first VW clutch. Everything is new expect for the clutch cable, which appears to be newer.

Any insight from the more knowledgeable Mk1 owners would be greatly appreciated.

I am also having this same problem on my 84 scirocco. Did you ever find the problem? This is also my first vw clutch.

Tighten up the cable. The clutch lever the cable attaches to should be at the 9 o'clock when the cable is tightened properly

Definitely make sure that the cable is adjusted properly. That was my problem, I hadn't adjusted it far enough so it wasn't engaging properly.

i think spec is 12mm gap between the arm and the bell housing on the adjuster. i had the same issue multiple times (didnt really tighten the set nut tight enough) I finally brought it to spec and it made a world of difference
