I wanted to give my sideview mirror turn signal lights that smoked look to better blend with the black trim underneath. It only took around 15 minutes, here is how I did it:

      Supplies needed:
Smoked vinyl film. I bought mine here: http://www.metrorestyling.com/Colore.../lensfilm2.htm choose smoke(dark)
      Heat gun or hair dryer
      sharp X-acto knife
      Vinyl squeegee

      Ok, Let's get started.

Make sure everything is nice and clean:

Cut a piece of the smoked vinyl about 3 inches wider and taller than the marker light peel back the backing tape. I did this dry, but you can use some water from a spray bottle to wet the backing making it easier to work out any bubbles. Lay down the vinyl starting from the middle of the marker light and working your way to the edges.

Now use a combination of the heat gun and squeegee to heat the vinyl and work the bubbles out and work the vinyl into the crack between the light and the mirror housing.

Work your way around the maker light until you have a smooth fit all the way around.

Next take your X-acto knife and start trimming the excess vinyl away from the marker light. Use the crack between the light and mirror housing as your guide.

After you have cut all the way around, carefully begin to peel off the excess vinyl.

Now stand back and check out the new look!

Repeat on the other side of the vehicle.

Not bad for less than $10 and 15 minutes work.

      Before:

      After:

      Good Luck!

Using this well done how to, I tinted my mirror lights today, and I also tinted only the clear part of the tail lights. Now I need to get the windows professionally tinted. I think it turned out pretty good, and looks great on Carbon Steel Gray. Not bad for about $12 total. Thanks for writing this up!

      The rears look p. cool

I'm really skeptical that it'll stay on, just looking at it, but then I've never worked with this material. Be curious to hear from you mid-winter to see how it's holding up

      edit: lol @ the plates

I have no idea if they'll stay on, especially when it gets cold and I go to a car wash. The adhesive is incredibly sticky, but you can peel it off by hand. I'll report back later.

The plates are a PS edit. It has a 4 and an H in it, so I just copy/past them over the other letters. I think blurred ones look like ass.

I thought you were in Future farmers of America or 4H or something in high school and just were so excited about it you got custom plates

      veedoubleme,
You should tint the lower reflectors on your rear bumper. I think it would help them blend in and improve the look from the rear.

I agree. I totally thought the same thing after I took that picture.

How much of a PITA was tinting just the clear on the tail lights? Did you do them dry?

Nothing to dry here... It's an adhesive baked charcoal tinted clear laminate. It's like thick tape. I made it slightly bigger than the clear part of the light and carefully stuck it on, making sure not to get any air bubbles (and of course cleaning them thoroughly before hand). A heat gun on low was helpful.

Then I used an x-acto knife to cut the excess area off. I just freehand scored along slightly into the red area of the tail light. I didn't push so hard as to cut through and cut the lights, although I don't think that'd matter much anyway as x-actos are such a fine cut. Anyway, it was scored and then it just tore along the line. It was pretty easy. Afterward, I headed it carefully and slowly with the heat gun and pushed along each piece with felt to make sure it stuck on really well.

Sorry for bumping an oldish thread.

      Quick question -
How permanent is this? Is it difficult to remove if I hate it the next week?

I just wanted to say thanks to the OP and the follow up. I'm going to be blacking my badges soon (my TR GTI has tinted windows, and red wheels) and this is exactly what I was looking for to make the entire package fit. Thanks again!

Very nice, thanks for the walkthrough. Just ordered a 12"x24" sheet of the dark smoked (should be enough for the mirrors and the side markers and another 12"x24" sheet of dark yellow to experiment with on the fog light. Will post pics when I get it in and do it.

I did this as well. It holds up better than I expected. The real time consumer is in the trimming.

My advice, lift the mirror cap up before you trim it. Otherwise you end up with a portion near the top untinted.
