I bought it last night and even though it's a tight game, damn it's hard to play.

Thanks. It has good reviews just like 2K11. I haven't played this one yet, but it took me a while on 2K11 to get the various dribbling moves, post-ups and shots down.

    How's the presentation aspect?

Is it true that you have to unlock the old school teams before you can play as them? I really want to see the Showtime Lakers vs today's Celtics.

Yes you have to unlock teams if you want to use them. There are 15 "greatest" challenges where you have to be a certain team, and if you win the game you not only unlock the team you played as, but you unlock the team you were playing against. And the games are not easy. I've beaten 5 out of the 15 so far, but I've lost plenty of other games as well while playing in this mode.

The dribbling and new shooting abilities take time to get used to, but the game is damn good.

The oldschool games look and sound great though. Just like if we were watching games from the 60's and 70's.

The game is a cheese fest online though. The new defense makes it impossible to guard the ball handler thanks to no auto assist and the 2k lag.

I'm tired of 2k's crappy online play. Fifa 12 has virtually no lag, so it's possible to have a sports game without it.

The only things I dislike are:
    1). The cheesy press conferences
    2). The cheesy Pre-Draft interviews

Otherwise, I don't see anything wrong with this game so far. Granted, I have only played MyPlayer so far. I don't play online anymore, so that's not a factor.

Damn good job they did this year.

Yes this game is a lot more realistic, but a lot harder to play as well. It's hard to score and hard to defend. It's a totally new game that you need to learn (which I think it's cool, and refreshing).

I got 2k6-2k12 and yes, I played 2k6 the other day for the hell of it.

Defense controls are easy on ball if you don't fall for pump fakes. Also, use the left trigger control when near an offensive player and that will help out a little.

I've unlocked 7 of the Greatest Challenges and I'm about 30 games deep into my "my player" mode. I finally cracked the starting lineup and I'm 16th in the league in scoring as a rookie.

    I seriously love this game!

Caster, I know you played hell out of 2k11

What are some things you love about 2k12?

Have they fixed the issue with the rookies in future years all looking alike (this has been an issue in every NBA 2K game ever)?

I'm still playing MyPlayer in 2K11. I haven't played any other mode, save for a few exhibition games with my brother, in 2K11 so to me it's not worth shelling out $60 for an updated MyPlayer mode.

I usually don't buy the same game in a sports series two years in a row. Last year I got NBA2K12, this year I got Madden12, and next year I'll get NHL 13 or whatever it will be called.

GT eye, I really like the ball control aspect of 2k12 compared to last years game. Examples are the fact I can jab step when I get the ball and create space to shoot a jumper, or I can jab step and then crossover and then shoot a jumper and it's a lot easier to get open jump shots. I like the fact the game is more jump shot oriented than last year because I could pretty much get a dunk at any time in 2k11 and it's a lot harder to dunk in 2k12. The passing is way better in 2k12 than in 2k11 and I feel I have a lot more control of the ball period. I also like the different post moves that are in this game and the different pump fakes I can use. Also, in my player mode, it's easier for me to rebound as a shooting guard than 2k11 and I like that a lot more because it helps with stats.

I'm still in season 1 of my player, but I'm more than half way through. So I wouldn't know what rookies look like after this season.

  15. 10-29-2011 04:03 PM #15
Made the All Star team as a rookie, but only got 3 minutes of run out of a possible 20. For some reason the game skipped the Rookie/Sophomore challenge though and I was disappointed because I was gonna light John Wall up.

I'm second in the league at scoring at the moment, but the team I'm on is only 17-41. I'm trying to get through the 1st season so I can plan on winning it all in the 2nd season.

Same here. I'm just trying to trudge through the first season, and see how things happen for next season. I plan to win a championship within the first 3 seasons, though. I just took Nash's starting spot, but it's mainly because I'm playing smart and efficient. Record is only 7-5 right now. Love the team, though. When Nash comes off the bench and I move to SG, we tear teams apart!!

Still can't find anything I DON'T like about this game! Not planning to play online at all, though. I don't even have Live GOLD, so I'm not worried. I really never cared for the cheesiness online anyway.

So I'm assuming you got drafted by the Suns? Right now in my season, Nash is playing for the Rockets. I got drafted by the Bucks but because we aren't doing so hot we have had tons of trades. My current starting line up is me at the #2 guard, Jennings at the #1, Batum at the #3, Camby at the #4, and Okafor at the #5. It's an okay lineup but Jennings misses a lot of layups for some reason and my big men don't finish strong near the rim. We got Okur, Hayward, and Glen Davis coming off the bench but they don't supply much in the stats department.

I got 5 more "greatest" challenges to finish still but finally got the Knicks to beat the Magic the other night.

Actually, I have two "MyPlayer" games going right now: One on the Jumbotron, and the other in my "Man Cave". I'm a PG on both. On the Jumbotron, I was drafted by the Suns. In the Man Cave, I was drafted by the Bucks. Just broke the starting lineup on both. My Suns roster is still intact, but my Bucks roster has seen quite a bit of trade action.

I like the Bucks' big men, but like you say, they have a hard time finishing at the rim. Now that I'm starting for them, I run as many plays as I can so that Ilyasova can spot up for 3's. That's what he's best for. I can't remember the rest of the roster, but I still have Bogut and Jennings. Jennings is doing a good job with the second team, and sometimes I'll come in as the SG on that squad. We recently had some big trades that I was happy with, but I have to load that game up again.

I also have two Association games going on the Jumbotron: A fantasy draft and a normal one. I am the Pistons on both. I purposely picked the lower ranked players for my Fantasy team just to make things interesting. I actually dig that team. My normal team (Pistons), the FIRST thing I did was get rid of Hamilton, Ben Wallace, and Stuckey. We are doing quite well.

Man, I love this game (no pun intended).

EDIT: Did you know that you can run plays in MyPlayer as long as you are the PG? I found that out late last year on 2K11.

Does MyPlayer still rock the ratty brown suit and never takes off the headband (if outfitted)?

Good question. I just started my next game, and it totally bypassed the "arriving at the arena" scene. I think it's only in Association now, in which case the Franchise player is arriving at the arena...in the same crappy suit and a car. lol

edit: during the press conferences, you do NOT have the headband, even if it is "equipped".

I'm 69 games through the first season and just want to get through it to start season 2. I hope I have some good trade opportunities available at the end of this season cause I may jump ship in order to have a better title chance.

At least I haven't gotten hurt in my first season like in 2k11 and missed 30 something games.

Anyone notice that in the "greatest" mode, there is always a teammate of the "greatest" you are supposed to be using who is bomb as hell?

My Bucks team traded Cory Magette for Stephen Jackson

Dude is a straight ball hog, and tries to take on all 5 players on the opposing team! Tries to make big shots and big plays, but usually comes up short!

I've had this since it was released but just put it in over the weekend, already addicted to My Player again. Another step forward this year, seems quite a bit more realistic - much harder to impose your will on the other team, though I'm like 10 games in if that so my player is still pretty weak.

I was drafted by the Suns - scoring point guard, I normally get sub'd in alongside Nash at the 2, and then seem to get rotation minutes with Brooks and Vince Carter.

I like that the My Player guys seem a bit more 'average' off the bat than before, I'm not able to dominate at all, but my guy also isn't completely horrible as in previous years - I can at least knock down some open shots and make some dribble moves without turning the ball over, though the 'skill points' seem a bit harder to come across than in previous years.

My Suns just played the Bucks - who have apparently also traded Magette away for Stephen Jackson - and he was my defensive assignment most of the game so I can relate to the crazy chucking and 1 on 5 play you were describing.

2K12 Stephen Jackson reminds me of a quote from Antoine Walker - asked why he took so many 3s..... he replied "because there are no 4s"

    Classic!!

I'm 22 games into my Bucks season, but now I have incentive to get Jackson off the team. I'll just shut him out, and hopefully he gets traded. I really like Magette, though. I had to guard him in my last game against whatever team he was traded to, and he owned me! Actually, in my Fantasy Draft Association game, I picked Greg Oden first, and then Magette.

Like you said, in 2k12, you can hit the open shots now, not lose the ball while dribbling, AND I haven't gotten injured...yet...

    /fingerscrossed

Gonna put in a few games tonight and hopefully get Jackson traded

Managed to shut Stephen Jackson out, but I had to make some bonehead plays to keep him from getting the ball. I had a D+ game, but we did manage to beat Dallas by about 10 pts. Since Jackson was playing so bad, he rode the bench, and I wound up playing PG, SG, SF, AND PF (against Nowitzki, no less). Hopefully the next time I play them, Jackson will be gone.

Playing the Bulls for my next game, though

You ain't gonna beat the Bulls lol. It seems the Bucks simply can't contend with the top notch teams and I only won 20 games my whole first season on the Bucks.

So, got through my first season on "my player" and was selected Rookie of the Year. I also lead the league in scoring averaging around 24 points a game. Got selected NBA All First Team and NBA All First Defensive Team too. Only issue I have is they didn't give me an option to join another team at the end of the season like they did in 2k11. So, I'm stuck on the Bucks still and I'm already I'm 1-5 in my second season. I'm murdering, but my teammates simply aren't helping lol.

  27. 11-11-2011 01:44 PM #27
So I thought I'd be kind of lukewarm on this game - not because it wouldn't be good or because it hasn't gotten better every yeah - but because the NBA season is in limbo and Forza 4, COD MW3, BF3, F1 2011 have all arrived on my doorstep in the last month or two. All of those have been shelved because I'm hooked on My Player (again). I have yet to open COD or my Fanatec wheel, its like October/November had like 2 years worth of video game releases for me

Not sure what's going on with my Suns. Channing Frye was traded away for DJ Augustin ..... because with Aaron Brooks, Steve Nash and I the team certainly needed more point guards.

Then I played a quick game this morning before work and noticed Steve Nash is gone as is Martin Gortat. In their place are J.J. Hickson and Marcus Thorton.

I was pretty surprised by the roster moves as instead of having 2 teams worth of point guards I'm now kind of overstocked on 2/3 swing men (Carter, Hill, Thorton, Childress, Dowdell), but my team did get a pretty nice injection of youth and potential. And after trading Frye away my defactor starting power forward was Grant Hill.

My starting line-up is now my player at the 1, Vince Carter at the 2, Thorton at the 3, Hickson at the 4 and Robin Lopez at Center. Lopez is a weak defender and terrible rebounder, but Hickson seems like he may be pretty solid inside. I didn't have time to check the transactions this morning either, its possible Gortat is hurt, as I'm not sure Nash and Gortat for those two makes sense, and I don't know if Aaron Brooks is still on my roster or not.

I rewarded my organization's Nash trade with a lovely 12 point (on 38% shooting), 5 assist, 3 rebound, 8 turnover game to open the post-Nash era

I need to see about editing the offensive plays I can call, my player isn't fast/quick enough to cross-over anyone or to 'turn the corner' on most guys and the pick and roll isn't an option in my quick play offensive menu. I have to try to rub my defender off on guys by trying to create 'natural' screens, but the game does a good job of trying to create spacing so my players often try to move to another part of the court and take their defender with them.

Also a cool note - the announcers were talking in my first several games about the Suns letting Amare leave to the Knicks, and the perennial question about do they trade Nash, blow the team up and rebuild - or try to do it on the fly and turn things around quickly while Nash and maybe Grant Hill have some strong years left. The commentary in this morning's game had a lot of discussion about the big trade that finally sent Nash packing and how the Suns are now going to try to start over with a new infusion of young talent. Its also kind of funny to have Steve Kerr as part of the commentary team as he was the former GM of the Suns responsible for some of the deals that the other two talk about with kind of a 'what the hell were they thinking' context.

Anyway, good stuff from this game once again, sorry for the long read, but I enjoy reading how the rest of you guys are doing

Damn, that's impressive! Hope you get your wins up. It's still early in the season.

I might be able to sneak out a win against the Bulls if I really get my head in the game. One thing I noticed when playing against them in 2k11 is that you gotta treat Rose as a threat from ANYWHERE, respect Noah's hands, and keep Deng off the arc at all costs! Basically, play a heads up, one-on-one game against them. Oh yeah, the biggest thing is to NEVER play against them after a few beers!

Not a long read at all. I kinda focused mostly on the UNOPENED Fanatec wheel.

Seriously though, I found the best way to keep your favorite players on the roster in MyPlayer is to keep them involved/productive, or else the GM is gonna trade them away. I found that out the hard way in 2k11. Kinda sucks, because sometimes you gotta sacrifice your own numbers and productivity. I also think you can map different plays to your controller for the Quick plays. I was looking into that a few weeks ago, but it was gonna take a lot of time. At least now I have something else with the game that can keep me occupied when I'm really bored.

Was off to a pretty nice start with 12 1st quarter points, 3 assists and 3 rebounds when......... sha-zam, back injury. Out for 8 games.

Came back from the injury and after two more fairly crappy games had a nice 33-point outing that included the go-ahead basket with 11 seconds left followed by a defensive rebound and two made free-throws to 'ice' the game. And against J. Williams and the Nets for double skill points.

Then back to reality with a 14 point, 37% shooting game with 7 turnovers. Overall I'm getting a little better at controlling my turnovers, but my player will go ice cold for long stretches missing open shot after open shot. I assume the 'consistency' rating needs to be boosted some more, but the points are coming in pretty slowly and I've been working on bolstering defense and rebounding as they are what the rest of my team struggles with. 66 overall now.

Realized there are almost no rookies because of the lockout, only rookies in the race for ROTY and the weekly awards are Ricky Rubio, my player and 1 other guy, so the Rookies/Sophomore game is going to be a quick match of 21 i guess .

A friend of mine told me the best attributes to upgrade first are Offensive and Defensive Awareness. In addition to that, I upgrade Consistency. I split all the skill points I earn evenly between those 3 at first. Depending on what games are coming up, I start to upgrade On Ball Defense and Vertical (in that order).

I really have no logic behind what I upgrade.

Upgrading offensive and defensive awareness seem to bump you overall rating up more than most other categories.

I tend to upgrade whatever I feel will help the worst part of my game. My team was pretty bad on defense and I thought a lot of that was me not doing a great job on the opposing point guard - allowing to much penetration, making teammates collapse to help and then allowing open shots on the kick-out - or trying to play 'help' defense and not being able to get back to my man and allowing an open shot.

I also horde the points instead of using them right away sometimes - then upgrade different attributes 5 or 10 'units' at a time to see if it makes a tangible difference ........... i have absolutely no real reasoning for this

In other news I managed my first dunk in a game this weekend - on a 2-on-1 fast break, just barely squeaked it over the rim

Is this game that much harder then 2k11? I played a ton of myplayer in that game and really never lost. I averaged well over 20 assists and 20 points. I actually found myplayer to be way to easy. I played for the nets and won a ring first year. Seeing how easy the game was made me not want to pick up 2k12.

What I found is that, once those attributes are close to being maxed, then the GM gives you a say in who you want to be signed, traded, or waived. It's not as simple as your rating being upgraded

Don't forget this is a team game, and that the NBA allows zone defenses On that same note, in MyPlayer, your team follows how well you play. Meaning, if you start the game being passive, your teammates play passively. I found that if you start the game aggressive and I mean EXTREMELY AGGRESSIVE, when you are subbed out, your team follows that lead/energy no matter WHAT YOUR RATING IS!

Sometimes I think I play this game too much...

Some parts are easier, some are harder. Dribble moves are hard, because you have to think. What I learned is to use your peripheral view (yes, I know it's a game, but it actually helps), and think ahead, as in, "ok, if I do this, this guy may do this, or this may happen, etc". 2K11 didn't allow you to walk the ball up court so that you could assess the defense. That was my biggest gripe with 2k11. In 2k12, I can get the inbound pass, and slowly walk up court, all the while examining the defensive players....

like I said, I think I play this game too much...
