I have to respectfully disagree with you there.

There are two body styles, two trim levels, and five colors.
That equals about a 5% chance that you'll find exactly you want. Not great odds.
You'd probably be better off ordering and waiting if you want something specific.

Now compare those odds to finding just about any other car on the market with exactly the configuration you want. 1 in 20 Golf R options is exactly what you want. That seems like pretty good odds to me. However, it does seem that dealers have mostly ordered 4 Dr versions and most of the 2 Dr cars on the lots are loaded. I think it is harder to find a 2 Dr base, but I could be wrong.

The bad thing is that the "exact config you want" is probably not what you really want. It is only the best match to what you want based on what they are offering.

Hopefully my R is on that boat too. My dealer's (Santa Cruz) eta is 6/4/2012. According to Jay at "Ask a VW Sales Guy" my car is in transit with an update due 5/23/2012 - a day after your boat is due!

was told by my dealer yesterday that my car was on a boat that left 4/27, due to arrive in San Diego 5/22. Anyone know what boat this might be, and if the eta is about right? Anyone else's car possibly on this boat?

Is it possible that people that have placed orders in Apr-Jun won't get their cars built before production supposedly stops in August?

For instance, I placed my order and deposit Apr 1, but it hasn't been released for production yet because my dealer apparently has no available allocations. They say the earliest possible chance of getting an allocation is Jun 15.

Here is the quote from VW: No Restrictions. Next month is final month of Golf R Orders. Production ends in August. Hope you get an allocation. We have 4 for May.

Depends on the allocation. Your dealer has that info. Next month is last for an R order. Call your dealer and ask if it has bee accepted for production and it is a 2013.

I called up on Saturday, and the dealership's allocation is accepted. The sales manager asked if I was fine with getting a 2013. Doesn't matter to me, especially since the 2012 and 2013 are identical. It'll be a while though, sometime in August.

I'm thinking Houston. The next VW Logistics Ro-Ro into San Diego is the Vega Leader on 25 June. The Marina Ace left Houston a couple of days ago and it appears there's precedent for their trucking cars from Houston to the Left Coast.
