I'm curious, what's the difference between the early smooth hood and later hoods?
Look at the picture of the front of his car and see how the hood line disappear as you go towards the front instead of come together like a later style hood such as this

There is no connection of the 2 lines on a swallowtail hood, it just "smooth's" out aka Smoothie hood. That's the difference...

Awesome find man, I look forward to seeing the continued progress

Today I messed with the engine a little bit, but seems the points dizzy may be fubar.... I'm not that bothered to spend ages trying to get it running.. going to dig around for my good points dizzy this week a little.. then maybe convert to electronic ignition if I feel like it.. but honestly I am leaning towards ditching it all for a clean 1.8T swap... but in the air about it all still..

Next I had the gf help me work on removing the rotted floor pans, after grinding the rivets out of the patch panels in the floor, she used the sawzaw to cut out the rest of the floors. Ordering replacement pans from Klokkerholm tomorrow.

The aftermath of what all was cut off today

Sneak peak of the wheels I am building for it this week for those that asked

i like where this is going
A Rabbit is not to be wasted on the tentative or weak. Only the worthy are invited, and then only at your own risk. If you have even a modicum of hesitation, DO NOT buy one of these cars. Instead, leave it for a worthy soul who has already matriculated to the sublime ecstasy of what those in the know refer to as a "MK1"

Great looking Matt. I have a front part of a rubber floor if you're looking for one.

I like the idea of a swap, not really sure about doing a 1.8t though. IMO, this being a period correct resto and a ton of period pieces going into it, I think it would be more appropriate to do a 16v of some sort (carbs/itb/g60) that's just my feeling. Whatever you do, I know it'll be top notch

This is amazing matt! i love following all your builds as they give me SOOOO much inspiration for my rusty box.

do you plan to leave the rust? or evnetually go for a full restore/respray?

Thanks Pat! I have a rubber floor kit myself stashed away.. but IIRC it's for a 2 door.. so not sure what I want to do yet.. My first instinct is to see if stockinteriors.com can do a molded carpet to match the OE orange carpet that the car came with.. I think that would look quite lovely

I am going back and forth with the same questions honestly... my problem is I have so many cars and have done so many different swaps.. especially in the past 2-3 years.. I'm also looking for something different I haven't really done yet.. I just did a G60 swap in my 77 Scirocco this summer, but that did cross my mind..

My other running idea is to build a "period correct" 8v with a 2L audi bubble block and a JH head with the set of SOLEX DCOE 40's I have. Put a decent sized cam in it, and rock the clean carb'ed look. Would be extremely simple since the car is already set up for carbs as it is.. I am just not as comfortable/clueless with carb tuning/tweaking.. so I may have to employ some friends to help set it all up.. I'm welcoming ideas/suggestions for what engine to put in the ol' gal!

The wheels are 13x7.5 and 13x8 Compomotive Turbos I converted from RWD fitment Center locks to 4x100 staggered FWD fitment. The offsets are still quite low, but I think with the milling I did to the backing pad and swapping around some wheel parts, they may sit "just right" on a mk1 with no spacers. Going to start bolting them all together today with the new Stainless allen bolts and finish washers I have for them

Thanks so much! My big thing I preach is to have fun! People take things so seriously on here sometimes.. as far as I'm concerned, if you are saving the car from certain death.. who cares if it isn't the shiniest car with the most chrome, etc. Just have fun building the car the best you can with the budget you are working with.

That being said, I am currently planning to just clean this car up and get it rolling again with the OG Patina. I have a "nice" OG Oceanic Bleu 2 door I have been building for years that is going to be taking up 90% of my time in the garage this winter.. so I want to try and focus on that vs. working on restoring this one 100%. I'm hoping to take care of any terminal rust to keep it solid until I do get to fully restoring it.. but that could be a few years, as I have a couple other cars in front of it

My 2 door for those not familiar

      Heron motor with carbs.

ABA bottom end JH head and carbs.

Bubble botom with JH head and carbs.

Whatever you do I say stick with carbs. No chrome craziness, just a clean silver block, clean head, some tasty little bits but go for the OEM + look under the hood.

Although I don't like 13's those wheels are spot on.
Scuba If I got in a cab and Esher was driving, I'd get right out. Then I'd ponder how drunk I was that I entered the rear of a 2dr rabbit and thought it was a cab.

I like old school motors but 1.8t is very nice. I put mine in 6 years ago and other than change the oil it just runs.

But a bored out 1.6 over square motor on webers would be sweet.

I know where theres a carbed Heron motor sitting doing nothing.

2 wheels all bolted together and torqued with new bolts and rubber O-rings, gonna run an extra security bead of silicone around the centers later today and they should be set to mount tires on tomorrow
