Hello first time posting my own thread in the photography forum, i have a compatibility question.
I love my Sony Nex-5n but my lens options are limited unless i purchase an adapter. My question. Is an older style lens (i.e. SMC Pentax-A 70-210 f/4.0, or M42 Super Takumar 55mm f/1.8) worth mating up with this new style camera? Will it hurt the quality of the picture? I know when i take videos i will lose AF, but that doesn't bother me. I am also open to sugestions to. Thanks in adavnce for your time.

Only reason why i would like to do this is because sony E-mount Lens are kinda on the expensive side, and to get an adapter for the Sony Alpha A-mount is an LA-EA1 Adapter $170.00 But for any other lens its anywere from $30-$100.

It's worth every penny getting an adpater. Old lenses can be had for next to nothing and will be a pleasure to use on the NEX thanks to it's manual focus aides

If I had a lot of disposable income, I'd get a NEX and some Leica lenses.

They look like they're made for the NEX. The only bad part is I would have to sell all of my Canon gear to afford the body and a single lens.

Yeah definitely get an adapter. From what I've heard, that is the main reason to buy an NEX camera.

Ok so i ordered a Pentax-K adapter, I will be buying one or two more adapters one for the sony/minolta-A, and Leica-LM Lens. Does this sound god or should i switch the Sony/Minolta-A for Nikkor, or Cannon? LMK

Also i will post some pics of the Pentax Lens on the NEX-5N when it comes in the mail, they said by nov 1st i should have it.

Thanks again for your input folks hope to hear more, and some C&C when i post some pics up.

Ok so after about 1h30m of searching i found this,
    http://photorumors.com/2011/02/09/si...ens-prototype/

I'm really exited to see that other lens manufacturers are going to now offer E-mount lenses!!!
So now its just a waiting game for more news and release dates. But i did order another lens adapter its for Nikon lens found a few Nikon lens on craigslist just got to go look at them and see if there worth it.

Been looking into these types of camera to just replace my DSLR setup (tired of the size and cumbersomeness of it all), I like what I see with this, may really look into it.

here is mine i have it on a Dolica tripod will be ordering a Manfrotto Ball head for fluid movement in videos. I did find out the only lens you will be able to use AF on is the sony NEX E-mount lens, and the Sony Alpha lenses along with its respective adapter. the rest will have to use MF and you have to go into the settings and set the Shutter Release w/o lens to "Enable" because it wont detected the other lenses with out the electrical connections that the Sony's have.

yep. I got the NEX to use as a digital back for my Minolta lenses.

_DSC0250 by A. Baker, on Flickr

As soon as the NEX-7 comes down, I'll pick it up to replace my 5. Here's a few shots using the 50/1.2:

Here's one taken in low light with the 85/1.7 (iso3200)

_DSC0256 by A. Baker, on Flickr

I've come to find my three go-to lenses are the 24/2.8, 50/1.2, and the 85/1.7. I've got the 16/2.8 pancake that came with the body that I use for snaps, though I'd like to scoop up a Minolta MD Rokkor-X 35/1.8 to use as a general purpose lens one day

    SOOO MANY LENSES!!!!
for some reason i'm having a very hard time trying to find any minolta lenses... Its depressing.
at least used ones are a pain to get...
I did find this Minolta 50 1.4 Md Rokkor-x Lens for $100 and i'm thinking of picking it up but not sure if its worth it... LMK what you think.

the 50/1.4 MD is a great lens. You can usually pick them up for $60-100 depending on the condition. Check craigslist daily and hit up the local pawn shops. Minolta lenses have a cult following, but the average person has no clue when it comes to what's good and what's not...which leaves a lot of room to score some sweat deals from unsuspecting folks

Check out the Rokkor files for more info:

Just pulled the trigger, got the kit lens (18-55) and also got the 16mm f/2.8 since it came with an instant rebate of $150 when purchased with the camera kit. Silver setup. Will most likely add the viewfinder at some point and they have two new lenses coming out in the coming months, a 30/3.5 macro and a 50/1.8.

Sweet i promiss your going to love it. i'm nt going to buy the OLED viewfinder i'm going to get a screen View finder like this one...

    http://store.zacuto.com/Z-Finder-Pro-2.5x.html

But one thats not so expensive...
this one is ment for the NEX line but its not of great quality

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...V9K3FNH1HNT19X

I might buy the Cheap one and see how it does for now and if i don't like it then i'll step up to either the sony OLED view finder or the Zacuto Z-finder.

Veedubin02 BTW your 365 picture a day thread is amazing keep up the good work.

Also I did but a Minolta 50mm f/1.7 lens last night of ebay looking for another one right now but not getting any luck, craigslist either.

The reviews I have seen say its what was needed to make people ok with electronic VFs. I plan on adding that on at some point.

I have not once missed the viewfinder since owning my NEX. The shape lends itself so well to waist level shooting; it feels very natural with the screen tilted up much like holding a TLR at the waist.

Oh, and check out the NEX 7 due out soon. FF mirrorless with a built-in VF...drool

thanks for the responses folks. my bro has had the NEX5 for a few months now. (i convinced him to get it since i have a few M42 lenses i really like to use). i really love it when i'm using it on a tripod or just taking pics of something static but i still miss the VF when i'm using an actual e-mount lens and trying to take pics of my nephews/nieces running around. i'll try out the way you hold it NOLA to see if i can live with it. i'd love to spring for the NEX7 but i don't think the bank account would agree unless i sell off my canon gear.

^damn, you're right. At 24+MP I asumed it was FF as was rumored.

Oh well, I'll be keeping my NEX-5 until an semi-affordable FF option becomes available

the prices of these things are insanely steady. i was hoping for a decent price break when the C3 and 5N came out but they're still where they are about a year ago. my bro got lucky and got the 18-55 kit for $470 but that was a one time deal from a sony corporate friend.

BH is giving $150 off the 16mm wide angle when you buy it with the camera. Thats all I could find.

As far as I know, with the lack of a traditional hotshoe there's not much you can do. I know there's adpaters on the market, but they are not "hot" per se. You can always use the on-camera flash to trigger an external flash...but that's likely not what you wanted to hear.

On my box it lists a diferent flash as an accessory so I would assume its made for the NEX HVL-F20S instead of the HVL-F7S that it comes with.

This camera is quite awesome, the low light capabilities are ridiculous. Need to work a little more with the controls.
