What is going on with all these US-plated caravans I've been seeing cross into Mexico? All these pictures were taken this morning alone, in like a 2 hour period. I've just been sitting watching one after another... They all go into Mexico, but none go out.
They're always Toyota trucks too. Are they importing them?

I'm totally intrigued! They're really all Toyotas. So wierd. Awaiting explanation..
#5
Don't have an explanation but I see it all the time. I've always wondered what they were doing..
#7
Really? You can't figure it out? It's simple. They can't be titled or registered for whatever reason (won't pass e-check, salvage/flood title etc). Move em into Mexico and tada no more worries.
We see it all the time in Ohio where most of the rural counties do not require annual inspections but the big cities do. Drive out of Cleveland and into the sticks and suddenly you're surrounded by all the crap you haven't seen on the road in ages. Most of it being 100,000+ mile early naughties and 90's cars that need loads of emission work but still have sound bodies.

We see those all the time in Texas headed south on I-35. I believe there is also some sort of rule that no cars newer than 5 model years can be brought into Mexico (that were sold here).

I owned a '92 Toyota Reg-Cab 4x4 w/ 22RE 4-Cyl. I think it was rated at maybe 115 hp? I would be reluctant to tow a small 14 ft aluminum fishing boat, I couldn't imagine towing another truck with that motor/ combo

I sold a '99 Suburban at auction last year, with word from the auction house that '99 SUV's were hot in the used market because it was the newest year that could be imported into Mexico without some sort of tax. Or something like that. Across the parking lot at my work is a Guatemalan guy who drives used trucks south of the border for his brother. There must be some huge markup, because the gas expense and the plane ticket home is such that he still earns a profit.

like someone else above, you cant figure out why they are taking them into mexico??
its because they can probably get them here for cheap, and sell them there. or like said before, wont pass inspection, but in Mexico they might still be considered brand new.. its pretty simple.
and LOL at the bus towing the truck. wonder what theyll use the bus for

the cartel drug lords have heard what success the jihadists have had with the hilux...
I'm always right. The sooner you realize this, the easier things will be.

They're importing them.
IIRC, Mexico didn't receive the bulletproof Toyota trucks of the 90's. If you live in rural Nuevo Leon or Coahuila, it makes sense.

Fleeing Alabama and taking as many trucks with them as possible

I really hope that the tarp in the first picture is covering a Power Wheels pickup truck.

So the export of our used vehicles to Mexico is probably related to the used car prices at all time highs in the USA thread going on.

You see 'em constantly on I-25 heading from Denver southbound. My dad calls 'em Amigo Parades. They convoy up and potter along at about 60 in the slow lane all the way to El Paso, and then it's adios. Mostly small, old SUVs, pickups, and utility vehicles.

That's right. If you go to Guatemala, the main form of "public" transportation is actually private bus companies that operate old American school buses with crazy paint jobs. Same with the cars. The cars that nobody buys here because they're too old are picked bought at auction here and resold there. In fact, many of the cars I saw in Guatemala still had old US dealership badges on them.

dam no wonder i cant find a used taco for sale around here at a reasonable price. these toyota trucks are bulletproof besides the frame rails rusting out. friend had one with 250k+ on the odo.. toyota offered to buy it back for 150% of the trucks fair market value under recall because his frame rails were rusted so bad. The warranty repair job on them are no longer worth the labor(as they were a few years ago) for the dealer so they just buy em back. I bet the toyota dealers sold them at auctions and found their way into the native's hands. but that's just one side of the story. I'm pretty irritated they are driving the price and demand for these trucks even further in the us.
edit:
nooooooooo I see an xr250r in one of the beds... I have one of these bikes. It's a 1986 dirtbike. they run almost forever without a lick of maintenance and will run forever with regular / little maintenance. dam spics
